Today we are talking about how edible oil is produced from oilseeds like sunflower, soybean, mustard, and groundnut. The journey from raw seed to oil is not just simple pressing—it involves a proper industrial process to get maximum yield and good quality oil.

First, the oilseeds are cleaned and sorted to remove dust, stones, and unwanted materials. After that, the seeds are often dehulled and crushed or flaked to break their structure. This step is very important because it increases the surface area, making it easier to extract oil.

Next comes the conditioning or heating stage, where seeds are slightly warmed or steamed. This helps soften the seed cells and improves oil flow during pressing.

Then the seeds go into a mechanical screw press (expeller machine). Here, high pressure is applied continuously, squeezing oil out of the seeds. This is known as cold pressing or expeller pressing, depending on whether heat is applied or not.

After pressing, we get two outputs: ✔ Crude oil (which still needs filtering or refining) ✔ Oil cake (which is rich in protein and used as animal feed)

For higher efficiency in industries, sometimes a second method called solvent extraction is used after pressing to recover remaining oil.

In short, oil production is a combination of cleaning → preparation → conditioning → pressing → separation, all designed to get maximum oil with good quality and minimal waste.
