❝ i’m not trying to be overbearing, aang.. it’s just scary for those that love you to watch. ❞
it was apologetic, her words slow and meticulous. the last waterbender lingered in his doorway, doe eyes trained down and arms crossed. he was always pushing himself, further and further each time. she spent countless sessions looming over him with healing hands only for her time to be wasted. her role had been assumed a decade ago when she last saw her mother - katara became a woman before she even was considered a child - she couldn’t help that who she was refused to be tucked away! she was a mother with no child regardless of if the doors were opened or closed.
still, she could see disinterest in her friend’s eyes as they promised - no, lied - that they wouldn’t strain themselves anymore. one shouldn’t have to apologize for caring, but katara found herself in that position a countless amount of times.
“----you don’t have to worry about me, katara.”
words that he finds himself mumbling FAR too often, aang’s attempts to ASSUAGE his friend are LESS than effective. even the SLIGHTEST display of discomfort & she is there, to COMFORT and to NURTURE regardless if he has requested her to or not. he doesn’t wish for her to worry nor APOLOGIZE for doing so---- it’s the little thoughts like these that bring a wave of GUILT to his conscience, though he knows katara’s motherly instincts are ROOTED in the loss of her own.
prevarication is sometimes the only way for him to ensure she quits worrying, but more often than not she can see right through it. fool proof--- he should’ve known better than to LIE to her.
“i’m gonna be fine. i promise.”
