         “ i think you think that makes this less bizarre, when            it really doesn’t. ” so his words had probably come            off a little harsh, but he tended to be harsh and he            didn’t exactly have much of a filter. it was bizarre.            there were plenty of other places one could work            while they tried to get to the career they wanted.             he never really shamed anyone who worked in             that kind of business. a job was a job, and chad             wasn’t one to judge someone’s character based             simply off what they did to make ends meet.

                     it just wasn’t gabriella.

            the dancing, the dressing. all of it was so very much             unlike the girl he used to know that it was a bit startling.             he couldn’t believe that there was no where else she             could find to work. he wasn’t one to judge, of course,             and if she liked her job who was he to pass judgment.             “ harassment is harassment. still not something most               people want to deal with. or something you should have               to deal with. ever. ”

                  he heaved a sigh at her final request. of course.                   “ you want me to lie to my best friend? when did                      you last talk to troy anyway? ”

            she purses her lips  && looks away from him. she’d never                  been very good with harsh tones.   ❛ ----i know. && it’s not my ONLY                 job. i hardly SLEEP.  ❜ he’s not the only one who can raise their voice.                 between her diner job, the internship, && all of THIS, she got maybe                  two hours on a  g o o d  day.

CHAD

        he realized after the fact that it was probably a bad idea         to yell out her name when there were other paying customers         around. they knew her as something different. not as the         weird math genius who had swooped in an changed the entire         dynamic of their high school. not as the girl who had become         his friend all those years ago.

       she was a little too close for comfort, and he had to take a deep        breath to calm his nerves. it wasn’t that he didn’t find her attractive.        it was actually the opposite. he’d always thought she was cute, with        that innocent charm of hers, but she had been troy’s and he wasn’t        that guy. troy was his brother, and he would never do him like that.        even in that moment with this girl who looked like gabriella montez        but definitely wasn’t the girl he used to know, he felt a bit guilty for        thinking about her in a less than innocent way. but then she’s whispering        in his ear, explaining herself, and he feels a bit of the tension ease.        yeah, he definitely needed to hear this explanation.

       he practically jumped from his seat, making sure no eyes were on        either of them before following her to the back. it felt so wrong and so        entirely unlike her. he blows out a breath at the comment, rubbing the        back of his neck and avoiding her gaze.

               “ thanks. you too. i mean, you don’t really look like                   yourself. ” because that was subtle. “ what is all of                   this, gabriella? i never pegged you as the type to                   work here. ”

              ❛ ---i’m not, or, well, i wasn’t? this is just... my second job.                   next to my law internship.❜  she rubs her arm && moves to sit on                    the  couch, crossing her legs && sighing.  ❛ ----i’m in debt. a lot of                   it. this was my best option -- it makes good money, && i don’t get                   as harassed by people like stripping does, this is mostly just...                   scantily dressed dancing. ------------------------please don’t tell troy. ❜

                   having to explain herself was hard.  she didn’t expect this to ever                     come up. she was still gabriella montez.     she just had to be ella                     at night && seduce men on stage.         it was like acting to her.
