Jake Hix gives such Big Brother vibes with how he immediately takes in any and all random hungry children who wander into his place of work. Got to the Wade Academy Library scene, and kept picturing sleepy Moxie being all snuggled up against Jake and had to stop reading to doodle it, because ooooh my babies, they're all so sweet, I love them. Jake acting as an older brother for Moxie and Lemony has been my favorite thing to think about lately
The events of The Thistle of the Valley shook the thirteen-year-old Moxieās world. Her understanding of what is good and what is evil has change, and one she didnāt accept until re-uniting (sort of) with Lemony way in the future. In addition to that, her father āwho Moxie knew became withdrawn and gloomy and quiet and so much more since her mother leftā for once since this whole mess, went after her. Moxie was thrown into a loop when she saw her father (with others who werenāt present, Like Hungry Hix and Prosper Lost), looking like crap in his bathrobe and pajamas, running towards her, and gave her a hug.
Moxie couldnāt remember the last time she hugged her father, and soon found herself crying. She was crying not only for the return of her father, but the loss of what she had with Lemony, and the trouble that he unwittingly brought. Moxie there promises and kept her word to her father that sheāll make sure to tell him where sheās be going. The next several months and few years had Moxie and her father repairing their relationship; he apologized to Moxie of his neglect due to his depression, and how heāll be getting help to be the father she once knew and loved.
Having Kellar still at their home help. His presence, and to some extent, his sister and mother (who Moxie never forgave until three years later, when Lizzie left and Kellar re-accepted his mother, and only start liking the woman years after that) brought an odd balance to the Mallahan family. Kellar and Moxie became siblings of sorts, working together for The Stainād Lighthouse, which later has Moxieās father and other troublesome underlings working there. Moxie at the age of twenty-two, left Stainād-by-the-Sea for a bit to figure out what ever happened to her mother.
Moxie eventually tracked her mother, who now has a completely better life of a journalist, as well has having a soon to be new husband and stepdaughter. Moxie got angry and upset, and went to confront the woman, and was brushed up as a āstrangerā (though Moxie knows that her mother knows; Moxie can see the recognition in her motherās gray eyes). After the confrontation, Moxie walked around, trying to compose herself before returning back to the Hotel Denouement where she was staying. She forced herself to not cry until she was alone and in private.
When returning back to her room at the Hotel Denouement, Moxie did just that. She slumped down against the door, and cried. Sheās unsure how long she cried, until she heard a soft knocking at her door, with an unfamiliar voice asking her a familiar question:Ā āWhatās the news, Moxie?ā Moxie didnāt answer him. The unknown man continued speaking, telling her that he was one of the unfortunate witnesses to Moxie and her motherās reunion; the man apologized for hurting Moxie again. He suspected her mother had abandoned her, but kept quiet in hopes that he was wrong. Moxie still didnāt speak. The man didnāt speak again also, only slipping an envelope through the door crack. She took the envelope when she was sure the man left.
In the envelope was a phone numbers and addresses, with a note explaining if she feels comfortable again with him, they can talk and write to one another. The note also said if she still wasnāt, she can burn them, and he wouldnāt blame her.
Moxie decided to keep the address and number. Within weeks of keeping correspondence with Lemony Snicket, Moxie realizes she had to tell her friends: all accepted Moxieās decision. They are now adults, and finally understood Snicketās actions. Even Ornette, the one friend who has reasons to discourage Moxie from communicating with Snicket, understood and had no qualms of Moxie reconnecting with him. Moxie rekindled the friendship she had with Snicket in the past. Granted, Snicket now had the luck of being thought at dead at any given moment; but he tells her itās worth risking his life to communicate with her.
In the early days of Snicket researching and publishing the unfortunate chronicles of the Baudelaire orphans, Snicket wrote a letter to Moxie of his current frustration: his āDreadful Editorā is ruining the Baudelairesā story by changing one too many details. As a way to cheer Snicket up, Moxie pointed out that the āDreadful Editorā was still miles better than the āAwful Editorā who Lemony fired after the first three original publications. And as a joke, Moxie wrote how back how she can his āTerrible Editorā if she got her hands on it. Moxie didnāt expected Snicket asking her to be just that: but as his Kind Editor. Moxie obliged, editing all thirteen books, The Unauthorized Autobiography, and letters that became The Beatrice Letters.
Moxie after editing The Beatrice Letters, never gets a letter from Snicket again, at least as the Kind Editor. Gone are the days where she wanted to throttle Snicket for making her go on wild goose chases to get his manuscripts. Now she communicates with Snicket As Moxie Mallahan,Ā the Newspaper Editor of The Stainād Lighthouse, as before. Never does she see him again, but what they have is something she will cherish.
(But if you ever ask Moxie at the right moment, she will tell you that she did fact, saw Snicket again in person. He never saw her, but Moxie doesnāt mind. How Moxie saw Snicket again is how she always wanted Snicketās story to end: Lemony Snicket talking to a young girl that is his niece, both having root beer floats, both smiling and happy.)
