Potent minimalist art sends a strong message about police and vigilante brutality in America
Journalist and artist Shirin Barghi has created a gripping, thought-provoking series of graphics that not only examines racial prejudice in todayâs America, but also captures the sense of humanity that often gets lost in news coverage. Titled âLast Words,â the graphics illustrate the last recorded words by Brown and other young black people â Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant and others â who have been killed by police in recent years.
Let us not forget their voices
Tumblr has taught me more about feminism, women rights, rape culture, slut shaming, etc, more than school ever had. And there is something wrong with that.
Actually, itâs not wrong, but a fact of life. Education, if institutionalized, can teach predefined, widely spread values, abstract or very specific topics, but it will not be good at promoting new ideas. It has a 10-25 year lead time.
You might argue that feminism ought to be mainstream, and not considered new, but unfortunately that is not true. It is not mainstream, most people donât even know what it means.
Media distribution mechanisms like Tumblr (or Facebook, Twitter et al) are playing an ever increasing role in enabling people to interact. That is what you experience. In other words, you are reaping the benefits of being able to connect with people (by direct, indirect or no interaction at all) that you will never see or talk to.
Be glad that you have Tumblr and arenât stuck alone in your room without knowing whether what you feel is right or wrong. You have millions of people to bounce ideas of, take advantage of it. Thatâs the true value of the Internet, not the commerce, porn, mindless ranting or trolling.
It is accelerating everything. Itâs up to us to make it good.
Perfect road.
