it's a hole-in-the-wall bar, like many of them are on gunsmoke. but small means good, less chance of being recognised, more chance to bribing lookers away. even so, iris keeps their hat fairly low over their eyes, tracking 𝘷𝘢𝘴𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘥𝘦. their friends may have accused them before of being rash, but now that they're alone they think they've learnt. they know they can't take on the typhoon, and nor do they want to. they've seen the damage that's followed, and even though it's been years the memory of their saloon in rubble is still seared into their memory. no, they will not put anyone through that.

instead, iris plasters on a kind and gentle and charming smile, lifting the brim of their hat up a little with a finger. ❛ hey. you're alone, i'm alone mind if i sit here ? i'll buy you a drink for your troubles.   ❜

He's hunched a bit , the seat is a little cramped with his legs folded at an odd angle against the bar counter. The dried thomas meat is a poor substitute for a full meal too , but Vash isn't one to complain. At least not when the server has been nice enough to include a little cup of complementary water.

The people here seem happy , despite the glaring problem of dwindling resources. Vash is content to be a background smear in this town , just a smattering of red , a nobody passing by. One day of rest and he'll be on his away , his presence not even a story worth being told in a weeks time. The anonymity is nice , which makes the sudden company all the more perplexing. He blinks in surprise when a stranger appears , " Are you sure ? "

Patting the seat besides to him , a silent invitation — " It's free. "

The idea had been to just keep an eye on the blonde , not grow close & certainly not go around HELPING people with him . Before joining this group , the only people Wolfwood had ever cared for were those from the orphanage , but now he was going out of his way to ensure the stampede & reporters were safe . At this point , it seemed Vash was picking up on the fact that Wolfwood would go along with just about ANYTHING he wanted . Something he found even more annoying than the act of helping itself.

ㅤㅤㅤ ㅤㅤ At the stampede’s laugh , Wolfwood frowned , INSTANTLY reaching for another cigarette . He knew there wouldn’t be a plan ; there never was with Vash . But as he explained how they’d act like priests , it somehow sounded WORSE than just going in blind . He could play the part ; he’d done it plenty of times , but Vash ? What man of god dresses in a bright red coat with a robotic arm.

ㅤㅤㅤ ❝ Not gonna work , blondie ❞ The orphanage technically doubled as a church , so they’d probably give themselves away & there was the fact that going around saying his last name WASN’T something he wanted to do — especially not if Miss Melanie was there . 

ㅤㅤㅤ ㅤㅤㅤ ❝ No act , we’re just looking for a place to stay a couple days , and we’re willing to help out in exchange ❞

He isn't surprised the plan is scrapped almost instantly , chewed up like the ends of Wolfwood's cigarettes. Ah well , Vash figures he'd make a terrible priest anyways. Even the actual one between the two of them wasn't all too convincing either on most days. At least no one can say Vash didn't try !

Spoken once not all to long ago , he's all too willing to say it again , " You really are a really nice guy ! " The accompanying grin is easy , as he nods with an enthusiastic thumbs up. Not even his infamous reputation could ruin a simple plan like this.

Swinging his arms back and forth on their walk ; he ponders silently , a little curious on what it must have been like to grow up surrounded by so many. He was surrounded too in a way , only was by those induced into a catatonic slumber.

The roof of Hopeland Orphange peeks over the horizon , structure stark against the wide expanse of the sky. Vash spares a glance over towards Wolfwood , a feeling of guilt seeping into his hasty actions. Coming home was strange he found , nostalgic joy and dread packaged together. What had time changed ? What had time left untouched ? It was a heavy burden to bare witness to a place that once meant everything changing when you no longer had a say to what it became.

He bumps Wolfwood with his shoulder to catch his attention , " You'll be okay right ? "

" Want to go out eat something? Heard something good about place nearby. Just we'll have to keep it a secret, so we don't have to buy anything for the rest. " [ from Meryl! ]

Vash makes a zipping motion over his mouth with a silent, enthusiastic thumbs up. These lips are sealed.

A Meryl-assigned mission is not to be taken lightly after all.

The full extent of his honed skills can only be witnessed in a life or death situation , or the grand pursuit of food. Ever so gently he opens the inn door with creaking hinges, a paused breath as it passes the final groaning click. When no one stirs, he quickly waves at Meryl to duck out first.

With a giddy hop in his step he follows along , " Do you think they have pasta ? "

" Or maybe desert ? " Counting the double dollars in his pocket , it's in no way a hefty sum , but it's certainly heavier then the lint and dust that usually lines his pockets. Though it goes against the initial plant , maybe he'll grab something for Roberto and Wolfwood too on his own budget.

as you already know i'm not the biggest fan of trigun but i sincerely think you're doing an awesome job at writing vash. ♡

I've never heard this song before but it sure was a bop! ty for sharing anon uwu (adding it to my personal playlist)

JUST SHARING my opinion so ofc anyone is free to interpret it differently. I personally don't think Vash does good things for karma nor does he expect good things in general. In fact, if we're considering "being good" as transactional, I fully believe he thinks he's in the red and owes goodness to the world because of his past misdeeds.

There's no karmic expectation in any of his actions — he's good because of love. He loves the humans who exist because of Rem's sacrifice, despite the fact that humans have capacity for both kindness and cruelty (both traits acknowledge by Vash as well)

It's the kind of love (in my opinion) of parent to child, or on a cosmic scale deity to human being. The acknowledgement of imperfection, but also the pure love for humanity and belief that humans reach towards the best they can be. He fully knows being good will get him hurt - but humans can only be good if they're given a chance to.
