It was peaceful. Calm. Silent.
The morning dew lazily waned against flush green leaves. Soft chirping of birds echoed across the lush emerald planes as you rose. It was the same every day. Wake up. Deep breathes. Get dressed. Take a morning walk.
Check on the small plethora of animals that always seemed to hang out by the cozy cottage. Sweet and soft. Peaceful and silent. And lonely. But even the routine you followed seemed to crumble around you with reality.
In the distance, past the long grass and through the willowed trees, something had caught the golden sunrays. Into the darkened forest, cool and moist, full of secrets. The small glare of metal against the harsh sunlight, glistening and glaring past the maze of limbs.
Strange.
A small chill crawled up your spine as you narrowed your eyes, trying to discern where it was coming from. But as soon as you saw it, it disappeared. Something was there. When you looked back, the thing was gone.
A chill crawled up your spine, shaking you to the core of your being.
You couldn't shake the feeling that clung to your form as you went about your day. Not even the peaceful hum and soft furred creatures that would accompany you had helped. Every noise out of place had you on edge, the hairs on the back of your neck standing up.
Each noise was amplified by your growing anxiety. Each time you would turn, you would see that strange glare of light in the corner of your eyes. The soft glisten and happy expression melded into the background with the growing apprehension.
"Hey, are you listening?" His voice cuts through the endless stream of thoughts, eyes narrowed and lips pulled into a frown as he took in your form. Something unfamiliar gleamed in his darkened orbs.
"Yeah I'm fine Toro, just got distracted."
"Fuckin' idiot. Can't even hold a conversation for longer than a minute." The offhanded comment should've made you flinch, something that should've triggered a response. Something.
But there wasn't anything.
Empty, cold. An acceptance towards the way he spoke. Toro meant well, he could just be a little... harsher and blunt compared to the rest. It was fine though. Because he was the only company you had in the vast, winding planes of the country.
You just had to do better.
You always had to do better.
A scowl framed his tanned face as he continued, lips moving and sounds once again filling the silent cottage. You tried to pay attention to what he was talking about, but it was hard to focus. The strange feeling that welled up in your chest slowly bloomed, caution spilling into your tense form as your eyes darted back to the open window.
In the distance, near the tree lines you saw something move. Something fast and lean, a humanoid form fleeing from the sun and into the consuming darkness that lead further away from your safe haven.
"...Toro?" He practically hissed at you, irritation flowing into his voice as he beared sharp white teeth
"What?" His sudden change of tone made you flinch, eyes pressing shut as your shoulders tensed. You didn't know what you were waiting for, but instincts forbid you from moving. A few harsh breaths later, Toro responded. His tone still held a bit of edge as he spoke, his facial features morphing into one of slight sympathy.
"Darling, I didn't mean to startle you... I've just had a long day." A heavy gulp descended into the pit of your stomach as your eyes darted back to the open window. You could have sworn you had seen something. Something humanoid, with a cold, metallic glint in the distance. But it was gone.
A dry laugh escaped your lips as you coughed to yourself.
"...Nothing." Toro gave you another scrutinizing look before shrugging, turning back to the gleaming device in his hands. A shrill tone escaped the device as he sighed, turning around and walking out the door without another glance.
Not a goodbye. Not a lingering, longing stare that would once make your heart flutter in its cage. But it seemed that story had ended, all that was left in his wake was thorns on blood stained roses.
Clutching the arm of the mug beside you, you took a few calming breaths. The systematic rhythm slowly calmed your beating heart, the blood rushing through your ears quieting. All you could hear was your breath, and the rustling of wind in the distance.
Closing your eyes, you continued to slowly calm yourself. Focusing on the small stream of water that ran besides your cottage, the waving and dancing of long bladed grass, as well as heavy footsteps.
The sudden barrage of noise made you shoot up, knocking the cup to the ground. It shattered into tiny pieces as you looked around in a panic. Someone was here. Someone who wasn't Toro. That wasn't the friendly four legged creatures that tended to roam around the vast fields.
It felt like your heart was about to beat out of your chest as tears welled into your eyes. The sheer amount of paranoia you had been under had finally reached the boiling point as you heard the purposeful steps get closer. The small clinking of metal upon metal filled the silence as you stood in wait.
Two heavy knocks had you tightly clutching the closest thing near you, a heavy, worn leather book that was forgotten in the corner of the kitchen. Clutching the heavy item in your hand, you willed your limbs to stop shaking as you stepped forward.
One. Two. Three.
Face to face with the deep, dense wood in front of you, you took a deep breath and faced the overwhelming fears.
"...H-Hello?" You spoke, hand shaking on the cool door knob as you grit your teeth, clenching your jaw and hoping that it was nothing. That no one was behind the door you were about to open.
"Hello."
The voice reverberated through the silence in a deep, static baritone. The man's voice was muffled, almost like he had a mask on. But why would someone in the middle of nowhere have a mask?
"W-W-What do you w-ant?" You stuttered, vibrating in tension as you finally opened the door to see the perpetrator behind its aged wood.
There stood a man in full, sheening metal armour. One with a strangely shaped helmet that sat snuggly on his head, shoulders and chest decked out in the same shiny material. Confusion flitted across your face as you took in the sight before you.
"Do you have a minute to spare?"
All feelings of caution threw themselves out the window. All the warnings of strangers who would roam the fields and hide in the forests. Of sharp toothed predators and shadows stretching the miles. Of people with sharp lies and sweet soothing eyes.
Maybe it was because you were lonely. Perhaps. A soft sigh escaped your lips as your eyes darted around anxiously. Toro wasn't here. He couldn't be mad at talking to a stranger. He would surely understand right? That the silence would eat you up just like he had. A monster who spit you out after it got what it wanted.
"S-Sure." You motion inside the house, where he takes a moment to look around. Biting your lip with clean, smooth teeth, you think to yourself. A wave of embarrassment washes over you, your eyes picking out every little mistake that Toro would point out.
How the carpet had that same little fold that made the place look sloppy. The newspapers in a stack left behind on a bookshelf, forgotten and slightly wrinkled. The mug that had shattered like the broken heart you harbored. The small bits of dust that lingered in awaiting corners.
"Sorry, it's a bit unclean in here." You mutter, voice barely above a whisper as you bow your head, fearful of the stranger's response. Of the harsh words that could easily escape his mouth. Of the berating tone and mocking posture that would loom as you shrunk.
The stranger tilts his head at you.
"It's beautiful. This place, I mean." He splutters slightly, his gloved hand clenching into a fist as you finally look up. The silence after his statement made you quirk your eyebrows in surprise.
"Really?" There's a small glimmer of hope in your voice that has the stranger nodding his head rapidly.
"Immaculate."
For once, your still heart awakens with the small amount of praise. From a stranger who seemed colder than the winter nights of the shadowed paradise you hid in. A small beat, an unassuming thump that slowly awoke your chest. The way that the blood began to pump with more vigor.
You were enveloped into a heat that was so foreign as you gave him a small smile. It felt addicting.
There's a soft sound that escapes the strange helmet he wore, and you feel self conscious as you curl back into yourself. He says nothing about the way you had suddenly changed your posture.
"If... Would you..." The stranger in front of you stammers for words that makes your eyes glimmer, giving another bashful smile to encourage him to continue. To take a moment and regain the words that left his mind.
"Do you have any food to share?" He finally spits out, and you nod.
"Yes, just a moment!" There's a tinge of excitement that escapes your lips as you go dashing into the kitchen, where the stranger slowly follows. The black of his visor sweeps around the quaint cottage, memorizing each and every little detail. Of the knick knacks that laid hidden behind paintings and books.
Small little carvings of strange creatures he hasn't seen before. Each little sliver of personality that goes bleeding through the decoration. It made him feel warm inside. That this was a place full of memories that you could cherish.
A home to call your own.
He can faintly recognize the jealousy that bubbles up in his chest, quickly squashed by your fleeting form that flitters back into the room. Despite the sensors in his helmet, the scents that filled the air made his mouth water.
You help a small basket of fresh bread wrapped within a small patterned cloth. Fruits and sweets, savory cuts of dried meat and pale cheese that gleamed in the light.
"It isn't much. But I hope it'll satisfy you." He nods and takes the woven basket with careful hands.
"Where you from?" He doesn't respond right away, his voice raspy as he responds.
"Far from here." You nod, almost like you understood what he was saying. That he lived in a completely different realm than you did. But you knew, anywhere outside the bubble of lies and desperation was better than here.
"Safe travels...!" You mutter as he leaves. You wished you could leave like he did. Free of burden and without worry.
He can feel the lingering gaze as he leaves. He smiles to himself.
Din makes a mental note to visit you again when given the chance. That you were far sweeter in real life than from the blurred pictures of his visor. Precious, naive little creature who was trapped within the throes of a devil's hands.
In time. He will set you free from the prison that keeps you far from him.
You belonged with him. With a cheerful smile and bashful words. Without the sorrow and cowardness that you possessed. All because you were tainted by those around you.
-
Every few months you would see the strangely dressed person. Later, you had learned that his name was Din. A name that was so foreign, yet so smooth and perfect. Someone who wasn't the keeper of the gate. Someone who wasn't named Toro with those harsh expressions and cut throat words.
He came with his adorable green child with long ears and doe eyes. It was a happiness you longed to feel once again that came blooming into your chest. How you had shared experiences that no longer bore down on your shoulders.
The atmosphere that was once filled with fear had disappeared. It was filled with small, silent understanding moments when you saw Din again. Grogu, his child, had mirrored the delight you had felt. How he brightened the world around you. Leaving you wanting nothing else.
It was almost perfect.
Sometimes you shatter like glass. Too desperate and frail to disappear into the clown's costume you wore. A jester dancing on fire for the king who sat on his throne, idly staring in disinterest.
Of the bruises that littered your skin and eyes filled with tears. Reddened skin and irritated splotches that grew on your skin with each passing day. But it was fine.
You had Din. And Grogu.
It was easy to ignore the way your body ached in all the wrong places, how disgusting flowers had rippled and bloomed on skin marred by scar after scar.
But you put on a smile. Because it was your problem. Not his. Not anyone else's but yours.
You made the grave you lied in, and you feared that you wouldn't have the energy to attain the freedom you longed for.
One night had you at edge. Now, whenever Toro came back he came back with the scent of alcohol. Of madness and anger that seemed to be the new facade he wore. There were no false smiles. No teasing remarks that slowly picked away at your being.
You didn't hear the footsteps that came near the cabin, more focused on curling in on yourself as Toro talked away. His voice holding nothing but malice and harsh intent.
The insults that tore at your flesh and marked your soul was normal. Numbing even. You didn't notice the way that someone had lingered past the window, eyes narrowed and fists tightened in rage.
That his angel was being beaten. That the devil had raised you like his own personal toy, only to disrespect and destroy as he pleased.
Din couldn't stand it anymore. The way that his darling was hurting right before his eyes, and he was blind to it all. Everything clicked into place as he took sight of the bruised and blackened spots that spread across your skin.
Skin that was once pretty and perfect and beautiful.
There was no time to think. No time to stop and let clarity wash over his enraged form. All he saw was red. The red thorns that tore at your skin.
There was no words to be said when he dyed himself in red. There was nothing to be said when you cried out, shaking like a leaf and trying to pull him away from the devil who took you like he owned you.
There was nothing else than that ominous gleaming of armour that stared back at you. Whose hands were dyed in red that smudged your cheek in adoration.
"Ad'ika. You're safe. All safe. Nothing more to hurt you." And you did nothing when he enveloped your figure within the blazing cold heat of his.
And nothing was done when you had disappeared from the cage in the fields. Whisked away without another word.
All by the one who was washed in red and drawn in silver.
Hi could you do one where the reader has some trouble hearing and silco tries to learn sign language and the reader is so touched that he learned thankyou 😊
(This was such an interesting idea and I had so much fun writing this! Thank you!)
• Once he realises you're hard of hearing, Silco makes an effort to speak clearer and generally make it less difficult for you to understand him
• God save the soul that thinks its funny to comment on your hearing difficulties, because Silco will come for them
• He's seen you use sign language, and he's asked about it, but said nothing more
• One day he surprises you when he signs a phrase. It would be something small, he'd try not to make a big deal of it. Like, asking you if you're hungry, or if you could close the door
• You're completely stunned when he does this, and frantically asking him when and where he learnt this
• "...From you."
• He's very interested in learning more, and will start using it more often with you. It becomes particularly useful when he needs to talk to you but you're out in public or in a room full of people he doesn't trust
• He actually starts defaulting to it when he's had a long day and it's just the two of you. He's still learning so he can be a bit clumsy, will probably get things wrong
• He wants to learn all the curse words, because a lot of the time, he's insulting someone right in front of their face
