There are a lot of interesting comments from voters about why the JP fans love these characters so you should check out the original post. I can translate later but only for the comments I truly think is interesting or agree with. Please note that there are a few comments related to Frozen Teardrop in Heero & Zechs' sections but not serious spoilers, they're just about these voters liking how FT depict Heero & Zechs (though there's not any in other characters' sections 😆)

I already voted for Duo in the poll, I'm just happy my oshi continues to enjoy his popularity after 30 years. Heero being 2nd is expected alconsidering Duo & Heero tend to be either 1st or 2nd in this kind of poll.

Relena is generally well-received by JP fans and there has been a resurgence for her popularity recently so congrats for her placing 3rd.

Quatre being 4th is a big surprise this time round, I notice that recently there are a lot more JP Quatre stans showing up in twitter circles so I feel like among the pilots he has the biggest jump in popularity compared to the old days where he used to be the least popular among the 5 pilots for JP fans.

The other characters' places are more or less expected though I wish my dear Une can be a bit more appreciated (I love the batshit insane Une as well as her calmer self in the final arc).

I can't believe we got a Gundam Wing compilation after 30 years! Since Duo is narrating it, it's hilarious, nostalgic and very entertaining.

(It also has subs in many languages) Also, some new art of the pilots is sneaked in between the video.

Discussion & References (Part 1) - Gundam Wing 30th Anniversary Video -Operation 30th-

So, showing Wing, then Zero (EW), then Zero Snow White (I would have preferred Zero (TV)) is such a cool thing to do! That too on beat with Rhythm Emotion!!!

Seeing Meilan, in the same pose as Wufei from the original Gundam Wing opening is not something I expected. Not only am I screaming, but this was an amazing decision, and one of the best highlights of this video. That's some way to pay respect to the original material while building on it.

Heero got an updated scene, and it's beautiful as expected. The entire video is beautiful. The poses are exactly similar! Though in earlier TV opening, he's in a colony, presumably in front of the destruction he accidentally caused that involved the girl and the puppy. Though I'm not 100% sure of this. And in second one, he has his Gundam behind him, and it's on earth. Sanc kingdom? I think this scene is from GoL, but I can't pinpoint it.

Oh no what happened to Duo? He doesn't have his signature shirt from the original opening (the dragon (thanks @ikuzeminna) wolf crest one), but why is he so injured? Ouch. It looks Iike the Endless Waltz scene, where they are all fighting the Barton soldiers...though that's just the aesthetics, he could be anywhere.

Oh this Trowa's scene is very well-illustrated with amazing lighting composition; very beautiful. Though I don't understand the significance yet. And he's missing his mask too. And he looks so sad that my heart hurts. And he looks too cute.

What is happening, why are they all so sad T_T Quatre looks so done.

I'm not sure what Duo and Quatre are doing, but the art and scene are striking enough for me to put them here xD

Ok, so Gundam Wing is continuing the tradition of using the calm pilot for their emotion part of the 'Rhythm Emotion' song (the tv op). I don't recall him that animated in the series. Don't get me wrong, he does show emotions and expressions in the series. Just not this much.

So this is a parallel. From episode 1, where Wing fell into ocean, clung on by Zech's Leo. And I'm not sure what to make of this parallel, Zechs (his Leo tbf) replaced by Relena. Though referencing that iconic scene is amazing. And it's cute too, Heero and Relena. Awkward but cute.

Oh and this parallel! Heero falling through air without opening his parachute, vs falling/drowning in water. They are throwing in callbacks to famous scenes from GW and personally I like the idea. Feels respectful of the source material. Builds nostalgia but adds the thrill of something new.

Waterwork alert T_T Let me get some tissues first T_T I was not expecting this. This hurt too much. I did not expect this field to be this stunning. Oh my God they outdid themselves. This might be one of the most obvious references to Episode Zero and IT IS THE BEST ONE. They need to take this as a sign to animate it for us!! They need to.

The first one is the Relena look from the anniversary video, and the right two are from the original Gundam Wing opening. I always loved this scene, the Heero-Relena back-to-back (almost), and the small nod-side-look-thing Relena did. It was so addictive and cool and stylish. I'm happy they partially kept it.

Ooooh the new poses and attacks from the Gundams are so stunning. Except poor Quatre/Sandrock, why does he have his EW animation? And Trowa/HeavyArms scene is mostly bombs rushing off in the screen, but it still looks great. Wufei/Altron is visually so pleasing because of his trident weapon beam. Duo/Deathscythe looks like he's hung by the moon.

Epyon looks like it stole Deathscythe's demon of hell look here. Deathscythe rocked it better, Epyon looks weird, sort of.

This scene is just so beautiful in the new animation. And also, it is so nostalgic. Gundam Wing sure had so many out of the box and additive scenes. And memorable. No one can forget it.

Ummm...he really needs to learn to deploy a parachute properly. It's been 30 years. He has improved, yes...no broken bone. More of a hero's entry.

Seeing the GW cast again is always a treat. My heart is still recovering from the sudden video. Also, where are Sally and Catherine? I miss them. And Hilde. It would have been lovely to see them too. And Dorothy's pose is as elegant and striking as ever. Zechs and Noin could have benefited with a little more screen time, we barely see them! Une is putting on her glasses and Treize is just posing cooly. Still aura farming I guess.

This was perhaps my favorite part? Seeing the 5 kids, all of them together, and smiling? In such stunning animation and actually nicely smiling? All of them? Am I dreaming? And it was hilarious to see Heero parachute down and meet the others casually. Nice callback and reference. I do love Heero's new jacket (but not what it implies), seeing the other pilots in new clothes would have been fun.

Still, I'm so happy to see this. Unexpressively glad.

I nearly got a heart attack when I saw this. It was amazing, the left scene. Then it was depressing, the right scene. (Also, one poor guy is hidden behind Heero's hand all the time).

I mean I want to consume new Gundam Wing media. I love GW to bits. But not Frozen Teardrop. I don't want that. The cast on the right has barely any soul of the original cast, it's an entirely new series, they should just make it that way, it has nothing to do with Gundam Wing >_<

This looked like the Noventa's letter to Heero? It is not the invite Heero tore, nor the greeting card Heero gave Relena in last episode.

Ignoring the origins of this picture (Frozen Teardrop), but Heero looks absolutely cute in this. And it just makes me depressed thinking what his life is about to turn to, from that little Leo-toy holding child to... And partially why Odin as, you know, Heero's dad, is problematic...sigh

Edit: I was reminded by @ikuzeminna to update the Dorothy reference too, and here it is. The crazy/epic line "Hurry up and start a war."

Oh, before I finish, the animation choice, to use 90's cel animation style for the original Gundam Wing part, and then to use the modern animation art style for second part, is something I totally loved. Shows so much consideration, love and respect to the source series, and it deserves it and more!

(But then they added FT to it and that it a huge blow to all the love and respect....jeez)

Still...today was a memorable day. Perhaps for years to come. At least for me. 25-Jul-2025. I got to see Gundam Wing in today's animation quality. An anime 30 years old. Yet relevant enough, missed enough, nostalgic enough, amazing enough....(I'll be back, I need to wipe my tears ;_; )

THE MUSIC. The instrumental Just Communication that sounds like it was remixed for maximum nostalgia and adios feels, hits my heart so badly yet I can't stop listening to it!!

And the Rhythm Emotion. With its BEEP BEEP BEEP...I LOVE IT. It's still amazing after all these years. It sounds so great even 30 years later.

Gundam Wing pilot kills

I’ve always been curious, just how many people did the pilots kill during the series? So I decided to rewatch and count.

The kills are in two categories: confirmed kills (’x’ pilot definitely killed that person) and estimated kills (’x’ pilot blew up a factory/ship/plane/ect. and probably killed ‘x’ number of people) Estimated kills were rounded down, so that number could probably be doubled and still be accurate.

The results:

Heero: confirmed: 90 estimated: 315 total: 405*

Duo: confirmed: 61 estimated: 160 total: 221

Trowa: confirmed: 115 estimated: 170 total: 285

Quatre: confirmed: 61 estimated: 125 total: 186

Wufei: confirmed: 41 estimated:195 total: 236

So here are some charts that break down kills per episode (open in a new tab to see it bigger) (also, sorry for any spelling mistakes)

You will noticed that after episode 17 there is a drop in kills. Episode 17 is when Colonal Une threatens to destroy the colonies and then Heero self detonates, so all the pilots take a few episodes to figure out what they are going to do. After they go to space the kills go back up.

Also keep in mind that after they go back to space they are mostly fighting mobile dolls, so there are lots of battles but they don’t really kill that many people. Btw, EW = Endless Waltz

Heero didn’t do a lot of on screen killing in the beginning. In fact for a while he was in last place, but to be fair he was in coma and then recovering from said coma for several episodes. It was the battle at the Sanc Kingdom that pushed his numbers up. And he definitely did the most killing during Endless Waltz. His attack on Mariemaia’s bunker killed quite a few people.

*the reason this number is so high is because I counted 40 estimated kills during Heero’s flashback to when he killed the little girl. If you take away that number, his total is 365. I decided to count them because the event was a pivotal moment in Heero’s life.

Duo killed a lot during the beginning of the series; mostly by blowing stuff up. After he ended up back in space, he spent most of his time sneaking around or captured so he didn’t have many kills. Interesting note:He and Heero are the only two pilots that have on screen kills during Endless Waltz.

For the longest time Trowa was in first place. He loses his memory in episode 25 and doesn’t return to the battlefield until episode 39. So there is a big gap in his kills. In episode 39 he is protecting Quatre and Noin. In episode 43 he borrows Wing Zero to go save Cathy and in episode 48 he’s on Libra destroying stuff/looking for Quatre.

Quatre came in last, which wasn’t that big of a surprise as he is the most peaceful of the boys, plus he had the Maganac Corps with him so they did a lot of killing for him. Most of Quatre kills came right after his father dies and he goes crazy for a bit. He does blow up a colony but it was evacuated at the time, so at most he kills a few soldiers. His last on screen kill was episode 39, were he kills a solider to stop Trowa from damaging a colony and helps to break him out of Zero’s control.

Most of Wufei’s kills came from blowing up bases/ships or large battles. He didn’t have many up close kills, so most of his kills are in the ‘estimated’ category. He probably killed more people than I have here, but it was hard to tell sometimes.

*in episode 48 Wufei kills Trieze. This is a big deal but it still only counts as one.

Pilot kills from most to least are Heero, Trowa, Wufei, Duo, and Quatre.

This was really fun project. There were a few surprises, like how little Heero killed in the beginning but he made up for it in the end. And how few people Duo killed over all; for the ‘God of Death’ he sure didn’t kill a lot of people. He was in last place for quite a while. Over all the numbers ended up being lower than I thought they would be.

When I do my next rewatch I’ll have to count something else. Maybe how much screen time characters spend together. I was noticing that Heero and Trowa are together a lot more than I thought and Wufei spends most of his time alone.

This is amazing! I love the statistical data attached to this, lol. It’s interesting that Wufei’s image is an “honorable warrior” who does things straight up, but he’s done the most stealth bombing and group hits. Whatever these guys say about themselves, most of it is just talk, especially Duo and Wufei.
