allow me to elaborate because i feel strongly about this

demetrius being a bad father to sebastian is 1. completely overdone imo, and 2. a terrible way to make out the one black man in the game.

there is very obviously a stereotype (irl) that black men dont make good fathers. writing demetrius as abusive or intentionally ignoring and neglecting sebastian because hes his step kid and he doesn’t care as much as he does about maru contributes to this.

honestly sebastian is the sterotypical edgy guy who probably hates stepparents, like all people under this trope do. i do not think it’s demetrius’ fault (or really sebastians either, ill come back to this.) their relationship is so strained. sebastian probably was really cold to demetrius because, ‘nobody understands me’ emo trope. this isnt me shitting on seb, i love seb dont get me wrong.

just consider this before you write demetrius as a shitty father and consider how it contributes to racial sterotypes. and i do understand its canon they have a strained relationship! just please dont make it because demetrius is a bad dad or step dad. im not accusing everyone who writes this way of racism, i have written things about demetrius before i realized this.

TLDR demetrius is overprotective of maru and never bonded well with sebastian. its neither of their faults. writing demetrius as a terrible dad contributes to racial stereotypes.

I've had two different shitty stepparents who I hated (and still hate, and will always hate) with every fiber of my being.

But it's not healthy or harmless to project that onto these particular characters. A lot of us have had awful experiences with stepparents, so we see stepparent and our minds try to fill that gap automatically with our own experiences, like a biased and traumatized autocorrect.

But we need to remember that sometimes, stepparents are just mediocre, a shade of gray. And yeah, there are things like the snowman incident which paint Demetrius very negatively. But he is one of two characters of color in a see of white characters, written by one (1) white guy. So we should be mindful what we say and write about him, so as not to feed into negative stereotypes that demean people of color.
