this shit isn’t new. the rpc has always had problems with those who roleplay characters that perpetuate harmful ideologies in real life. it’s why there’s countless discourse about roleplaying rapists, slave owners and, yes, roleplaying characters that align with a facist narrative. when you roleplay a fictional villain who happens to be a killer with fictional victims, no harm is being done. no one is at risk. when you roleplay a fictional character with very real ideologies that is responsible for killing millions and that real people have to endure on a daily basis, there is a problem. when you attempt to humanize these characters, when you force yourself to empathize with these characters, there is a larger problem.
some characters should honestly be left alone. there’s a difference between a problematic character appearing in a film to contribute to the narrative drive of the film versus bringing said character to tumblr where they’re completely removed from their source material and thus has no purpose outside of the source context, in which case they exist solely for your entertainment on tumblr dot com. if your knee-jerk reaction is to feel slighted by the critique of this, then you need to step back and analyze where your priorities are.
