He stood on the porch of the farmhouse for at least two minutes before he finally knocked, wringing his hands as he waited in a mix of anxious excitement and deep dread for her to appear. He felt like he was on a hair-string trigger, tensed as if any moment he would either burst through the door just to get it over with or sprint away from the farm in a panic.
Before he could do either, Kate opened the door with a shy smile. Her hair was damp, like she must have showered not long ago, and the water made her brown hair dark and inky against her shoulders, bare in her tank top. He wanted to lose himself in it, and he tried hard to do that as he rested his hands on her hips and matched her slow pace, but that nagging voice in the back of his head barely gave him a reprieve before it was whispering in his ear again.
Should they have even been doing this so soon? They'd been dating for less than two months and it was a big step for someâif it went horribly, would she take it as a sign she was better off with someone else? Could he somehow mess up one of the best things in his life in only one night?
