Fic Rec Friday Like 10 Days Late

For Fic Rec Friday week 47, @stargazer56 asked for things that we have not seen people talk about much or recently:

In the spirit of discovery, this week let's all recommend our favorite underrated gems. Is there a fic you constantly reread that you think deserves more love? What about that fic you've been dying to recommend, but it doesn't fit neatly into any of the previous categories? Writers, is there a fic of yours that you feel is overlooked? Let's recommend those deep cuts and fics that haven't previously received any Fic Rec Friday love.

This list is not really in any kind of order, but firstly—I love several fics by @fishyspots but I'll single out At the Beginning With You. Post-canon husbands! Marriage can be hard but worth it! Communication issues! A mention of Oklahoma! Starting over! It's all my favorite things, and I think it's time for everyone to (re)read it.

And goodness, You took the time to memorise me is also about a rough patch between Patrick and David, and I like what yourbuttervoicedbeau / @kiwiana-writes is doing here. It's slightly experimental, full of emotion, and a lovely quick examination of a period of time.

In Luster Patrick is a jeweler, a little lost after a break-up, and David has a broken necklace. @rosedavid concisely fits a lot of reflection in among events, and I love how repairing jewelry and polishing gems appears throughout the story as both action and extended metaphor.

I think Twelve Hours by @treluna4 is a great example of structure really working for a fic. It's Patrick and David's wedding day, and there's more than a little excitement and nervous energy in the air. Treluna counts down the hours to the vows, and each section is its own little story. The pacing is perfect for showing Patrick's feelings and experience of the day.

All right, and I also recommend I'll Light the Fire by @norskheks. New husbands! Their first few days in a new house! David in a skirt! A title straight from a folk song written in 1969, guaranteeing I'll remember it! If you too like these things, maybe check it out.

And I'm so thankful for and impressed by people like therapychicken, who are able to fill in between scenes with heartfelt, true-feeling conversations, as seen in What Happened To You? We know David must have told Patrick about his past—how? when? Did it involve ice cream? Perhaps there was some banter? Did Patrick offer up secrets in return? Therapychicken goes there in this fic that manages to be both fluffy and chewy.

David Sits Here And Thinks About What He’s Done by @nilolay is a delightful, fun fic about [spoiler] David sitting there and thinking about what he has done in the middle of "The Olive Branch." What can he do to show Patrick how he feels? This glimpse into his head and heart is so sweet and amazing. I dare you to read it without both laughing and sighing.

Ah, there's so much good stuff in this fic, like

What he originally thought were beautiful black and white photos—upon further inspection Patrick can now see that they are hyperrealistic, intricate drawings created by dots. Hundreds, thousands, millions of dots. “These are amazing. I’ve never seen anything like this.” . . . . The longer Patrick looks the more he feels like this could be his own face staring back at him. His years with Rachel condensed into all these tiny black marks, where from a distance everything looked neat, perfect, the way it should be. But up close, in the thick of it, it was blurry, messy, unsettling—the full picture out of reach. He wonders if he had taken a step back, granted himself a little time and perspective if his life would’ve turned out different.

It may not be his desired outcome but it was a start. He flirted a little (he hopes the flirting came across), he openly admired a guy, and it felt good. It’s a step in the right direction. A baby step but a step nonetheless.

I feel honored that so many of my fics have been recommended by others on here, but here are a few that have flown under the radar.

A Knight and His Noble Companion

I wrote this for @a-noble-dragon 's birthday last year and had so much fun taking our boys on a visit to the Cloisters Museum in New York. If you've never been, the Digital Guide to the Met is fantastic for helping you explore the building, gardens and collection.

Sunlight Shimmering Love

I wrote this for a summer themed exchange and had a lot of fun planning a summer's worth of dates for David and Patrick.

Finally, a drabble sequence:

Glimpses of Black, which is a meet cute and I was so pleased I succeeded in telling a full story in ten, 100 word chapters.

Fic Rec Friday Week 48

This week our good friend @characterassassination-at-9am is letting us Shamelessly Promote Our Own Fics.

I'll shameless admit to not being shy about self-promoting on Fridays. To quote Rachel "I did it last week." I'm elle_elleg on AO3, but apparently Tumblr has a vendetta against underscores, hence the slightly different name on here.

First fic I'll recommend is the one that originally inspired me to start writing. I was looking back over it today and I am so proud of myself for putting together a 7500 word/multi-chapter fic only a few weeks after I started writing.

Huge shoutouts to @characterassassination-at-9am for first encouraging me to write our my own version of Loose-lipped High! Patrick and also to @a-noble-dragon and @wearpersistencewell for always being wonderful, supportive cheerleaders

Not How He Wanted It to Happen

Patrick is injured during his baseball game bringing his parents to Schitt’s Creek where they learn some interesting information about their son and his business partner while Patrick is high on pain medication. Or another version of “Loose-lipped High! Patrick”

I will also recommend my two fics featuring Ray interrupting our two favorite boys while trying to connect because I think everyone can use a few smiles and laughs this morning and both were just so much fun to write. Seriously Ray is such a hoot!!!

Laundry Day

It is Patrick’s day off and all he wants to do is kiss this cute boy he likes while he waits for his laundry to finish in the dryer. Unfortunately, his roommate/landlord/former boss really likes to chat.

Maybe You Could Stay

David and Patrick's first sleepover-sleepover does not go exactly as Patrick had hoped, but they are able to improvise and still make it a memorable evening

Fic Rec Friday week 48!!!!

I had a few ideas for what is most likely my last week to host. Ultimately, I felt like it was time....since we're winding down....for....SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION!

That's it. That's the theme. Do you have a fic that you're particularly proud of? Or a fic that got a lot of attention when you posted but hasn't been recc'd yet? Or something that didn't get enough attention and you want to give it a boost? Here's your chance! I know we all hate it, but we should be proud of the work we've done and there's nothing wrong with patting ourselves on the back every now and then ;)

I'm going to start with 3 of mine. The first two come from my 'Pants on Fire' series wherein Patrick Brewer is caught lying about one thing or another, usually to embarrassing results. These two are less embarrassing and more heartwarming and ended up being chapters long instead of a one-shot. Some of my best works spawned from short fics that you carnies loved and encouraged me to write more! So thank you all!

For my 3rd rec, I'm going to go with my frozen over fic from a couple of years ago. It's just got a healthy dose of embarrassment, along with some feelings too....and my most favorite parents, Marcy and Clint.

This is a tough ask for someone with 252 fics 😅 So I thought first I'd focus on the shameless bit and ask who can get these 2 fics from 99 kudos to 100? 🤣🤣🤣

Summary:

What if Patrick Brewer had eczema in the canon universe?

”Does that hurt?" David asks out of the blue, nodding at the reddened creases of Patrick's inner elbows. Despite the thoughtless way he’s blurted out the question, his voice is sympathetic and his head tilted in curiosity. He really wants to know.

Patrick startles, he hadn't realised he'd drawn attention by unconsciously scratching at the inflamed skin there. A flush of embarrassment and shame washes over him as a result, and ends up suffusing his entire body. He feels caught out. And even though he should have been expecting it he’s still unsure how to navigate this conversation.  He’s always found it difficult enough to open up about his skin condition in the past, concerned with how everyone else perceives him. He has a thinner skin than most, literally, and it makes him feel vulnerable.

"I- Well- It's eczema," he explains hesitantly, suddenly wishing he’d forgone the usual button-down with its rolled up sleeves. He doesn’t know David well enough yet to know how he’ll react. What if David tells him he can't work in the store looking like this?

Starfish

Summary:

Patrick pauses enough that David starts to feel nervous. "You know it's ok to spend some time apart every now and again, David. Right? It's healthy. Just because we're married doesn't mean we have to spend all our time in each other's orbit."

"It doesn't?" David asks, still seeking reassurance.

Then I thought I'd throw in the fic that I'm probably most known for...

Noble Beloved

Summary:

The town of Schitt’s Creek has a rather large secret, one the Roses know nothing about until the fateful day Moira Rose gets involved. Naturally, she then has to rope David in too - offering him the position of Dragon Liaison Officer. Which is ridiculous, because Dragons don't exist. Right?
