WHO WANTS TO HEAR ME YAP ABOUT LOTF? YOU DO!!

Something I never hear lotf fans talk about is the connection between Ralph and Roger. I never hear them talked about together in the same context which seems so sad to me because one of the main purposes of Roger's character is to parallel Ralph. Their whole relationship comes from the symbolism of the spear sharpened on both ends. To me, the double ended spear represented the mind's full descent into madness and the capacity to kill. A spear always has two ends: a butt end that is harmless and safe, and a sharpened end for killing. This represents how humans have two sides, one capable of killing, and one for empathy. However, the spear sharpened on both ends has no butt end, it is pure sharp-end killing. This symbolizes how the wielder, Roger, has whittled down his empathetic side and now has the mental capacity to kill. But too many people end it at that. It cannot be forgotten that Ralph also sharpened a spear on both ends. By chapter 12, they both have a double ended spear, showing how their minds have both degraded to become pointed on all sides. At this point, Ralph is no more "evil" than Roger is always labeled as (i put evil in quotations because I believe neither Ralph or Roger are truly evil, they are 12 bro 😭 i just think they are deeply emotionally troubled because of their environment) The people who claim Roger is pure evil sadism incarnate always fail to address how by their logic Ralph would also be considered as such. Roger parallels Ralph and tells a dire warning of how no one is immune from turning into a spear sharpened on both ends.
