Another thought I have to add to the Hey, Melissa discourse is that if the genders were swapped it would still have heavy social commentary except it'd be more about how a lot of men feel entitled to the women they're attracted to and think they get to put women they don't like "in their place" and the theme of dehumanisation would still be there except we wouldn't even be having discourse around it, it'd just be regarded as your typical stinky evil man tortures women horror story and the social commentary would still be overlooked in favor of the shock value except everyone is used to every other horror story just being violence against women so we'd just be like "yeah, stinky evil man tortures women"
