I think after Ralph dies they become completely disillusioned with the beast. It's a complete change from the fact that they were the ones to find it on the mountain.

Drawing them pre-island and then island designs is really funny to me because oh my god what did they do to you .Especially with the hair.
That's one reason I like to draw them with short hair pre-island, not only because it feels more accurate to me (though I'm probly getting a lot of other stuff period inaccurate Who cares) but because it makes for a sharper contrast.
Also cause theyre kind of ugly cute in a way when their hair has to be all combed or whatever and their forehead is out (which looks bigger sometimes with child facial proportions). In this way the choir boys have two pre-island designs to me.

I think any time they get a crush im not going to allow them to confess bc the way the miis act in romance is just too far fetched from the characters and I don't think i could stand it. One day Maurice completely ignored Jack to hang out with Roger and then he got scared and ran away from SIMONS DIARY LMFAO (iwould too) and then I tried to get Jack and Roger to hang out but Roger didn't like him and then I tried to get Jack to hang out with Maurice but he got freakign caught on a rock and they couldn't do anything and there's him looking depressed Oh my god bro get a grip

nobody would like my no/delayed rescue because Ralph and Jack would die and Sam and Eric would be the protagonists.Don't ask me to write this all you'll get is a stupid bulleted list because I fear if I triedto write anything it would decay in a week and never be touched again and also i wouldnt have a concrete conclusion.
I do have many thoughts though...the idea of it was what really got me to look more into maurice & roger's characters since they would also take on extremely important roles in the story, and of course sam and eric (and also where that Jack skin cancer headcanon really developed LMAOOOO)
It is possible for Roger to have a loving parent/parents while also giving him horrible childhood trauma (the emerging british foster care system).

Idk but I personally find it More interesting to see his sadism, his inability for guilt, and unsettling nature not only be just because that is the way he is but also have it have a psychological root. Exposure to violence in early childhood both causes supression of emotions (making a child seem very reserved) as well as increases the chances of recreating this violence.
I feel like what his blood parents were like would be vague. Whether they were investigated and Roger was taken away or they just straight up died would be up to interpretation, but I think the foster care explanation works well with the hints we get of Roger's worldview. I think the best line we get for him is when he's terrorizing Henry and there's a description of the taboo: "Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law. Roger's arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins."
The second sentence with the part about knowing nothing of him could not only about the fact that they are on an island and civilization has forgotten about them (probably the original intent) but could be especially applied to Roger who might've been at one point harmed instead of protected by parents (or lack-thereof), school, policemen, and the law. That's what I get, in any case.
He is also shown to be somewhat torn in his actions, or at least self-conscious of what he is allowed to do. The security of his adopted family and the (most likely deeply buried) abuse faced at the hand of the foster care system are two forces that contrast each other in his life, much like the lingering consequence of the taboo and the simultaneous freedom are on the island.
The security of his adopted family and the freedom the island gives him could also give similar effects, that is, drawing him out from reservation which also comes with a side of the expression of his sadism. The comfortability makes the urge to recreate violence rise and he offends again, incrementally making the actions worse and worse. When it gets to a bad point, he doesn't feel guilt, but possibly fear instead, the most repressed of his emotions, of his own act (jangmans jorror or whatever guh). But it goes away.
Anyways, I think he did something like this back home once he started trusting his family. Once they found out whatever he did, there was consequence (going to boarding school), however, resetting a taboo and shoving him back in to being reserved. It's unintentional on the family's part since they don't really understand what's going on in his mind but just want the best for him. They really weren't expecting this behavior from Roger who they probably perceived as very polite before.
Boarding school seemed like a good way to reinforce discipline and socialize him…but he never really interacted with any of the other kids very much because he was back to square one (I take the "whom no one knew" line kind of literally (though he makes Plenty of judgements about the kids around him while there)). The island opens him back up again and this cycle resets, but there is nothing to stop it this time.
I think yes having an inherent nature of violence is interesting, and juxtaposing that with very kind parents can be funny…but the way I look at characters in a character driven story isn't like that.
I've extended a psychological lens to many of the other characters because I find it interesting and that logic doesn't just stop randomly for Roger for me.
At the same time, I don't want background analyses of the characters to completely explain why they are the way that they are because it feels too disconnected from Lord of the Flies as a story. Also it's not like the adoption system situation will make a child do evil stuff, especially once they have a secure family, so it doesn't completely remove the sadistic nature part of Roger's character.
I think I just put a lot of thought into what Roger might've been like pre-island because he's very interesting. And if you think an analysis is my excuse for his behavior ……..no…….,, that kid is still CRAZY!
I think I wrote so much just because for one I thought a lot about it... and for two I feel like i need to overexplain myself because I feel like sometimes people get mad when you don't JUST make Roger naturally sadistic with 0 outside influence . Like I know thats the Vision of the book but also can i think about childhood psychology for a minute in a book about children 😭😭😭😭😭😭no dont throw rocks at me pls!!!
