When your colouring and it’s lowkey you best work but just to make sure you show it to your cg and they tells you what a good job you did so you know you’ve made it, even better if they put it on the fridge, like Mona Lisa level colouring going on.
There is nothing you have to do to deserve love and care! You deserve those things just because you exist! You do not need to be “perfect” to be loved or cared for! You do not need to be useful or productive to be loved or cared for! I promise

Caregiver! Frank Langdon and Little! Mel King
A/N: Yes...I know I did Puppy Frank and Little! Mel already but...hear me out. Dada! Frank and Little! Mel?
- Mel is Frank's little sunshine, and you can't convince him otherwise.
- Frank has a dedicated shelf in his apartment that is entirely Mel's. A coloring book she likes, the specific brand of colored pencils she prefers over crayons, and a soft blanket she claimed and never gave back. It happened so gradually he didn't notice until it was already just a fact of his apartment.
- Mel regresses quietly. There's no single moment where it happens - one minute she's fine and the next she's a little smaller, a little softer, trailing behind him and hovering just inside arm's reach. Frank learned to recognize it before she did. He never makes it a thing. He just adjusts.
- Frank always asks before he touches her shoulder, steers her somewhere quieter, or puts a blanket around her. Every time, without fail, even after all this time. Mel has never once had to brace for unexpected contact. He made sure of that without ever turning it into a conversation.
- She doesn't talk much when she's little. Frank is comfortable with silence in a way that surprises people who don't know him well. Sometimes they sit together for a long time and neither of them says anything and it's genuinely the most settled either of them has felt all week.
- Frank keeps a pair of soft over-ear noise-cancelling headphones in his bag now. Not earbuds, but actual good ear defenders. He learned early on that earbuds don't work as well for Mel. He doesn't announce them; he just has them ready.
"Here." Mel puts them on without comment. Frank goes back to whatever he was doing. Ten minutes later, Mel says very quietly, "Thank you." "Yep."
- Mel loves animals with her whole entire heart when she's little. Zoo days are sacred. She wants to stay at every enclosure twice as long as the sign suggests, and Frank has never once told her it's time to move on. He just stands beside her and looks at whatever she's looking at.
"That one's looking at us." "Yeah, it is." "Do you think it likes us?" Frank considers this seriously. "Probably likes you. Jury's out on me." Mel thinks about this. "I'll put in a good word."
- She gets very fixated on small, specific things. A duck with a funny walk. A cloud that looks like something. A beetle on a leaf. Frank crouches down and looks with her. Every time.
"Look." "I see it." "It's doing something." "It really is."
- Mel has one stuffed animal she is absolutely devoted to, and she has never explained why. Frank has never asked. It comes everywhere. That's just the rule.
- Outside always helps. Frank figured this out fast. Open air, room to breathe, no overhead fluorescents, no ambient noise bouncing off hospital walls. His first instinct when things get hard is always "let's go somewhere." Usually the park or the zoo. Sometimes just the back steps with a snack.
"Come on." "Where are we going?" "Outside." "Why?" "Fresh air." Mel puts her shoes on. She's learned not to argue with fresh air and Frank.
- Frank has a playlist on his phone now labeled simply "Mel" that is nothing but soft instrumental music and one Taylor Swift album she likes. His coworkers have absolutely seen it and said nothing.
"Is that - " "Don't." "I'm just saying - " "I will end this conversation."
- Mel falls asleep on car rides home without meaning to. Frank turns the music down and takes the long way back. He tells himself it's because of traffic. There is no traffic.
- Frank has shown up to a shift with a small butterfly sticker on his lanyard and said nothing about it to anyone. His colleagues have learned not to ask.
"Nice sticker." "Thank you." "Did Mel - " "Have a good shift, Evans."
- She thrives on routine when she's little. Same blanket. Same snack. Same nature documentary she's already seen four times. Frank has it memorized at this point. He puts it on before she asks.
"We're watching the ocean again, aren't we?" Mel nods, already pulling the blanket up. "Yeah, okay."
- Hard days have a specific shape now. Quiet apartment. Headphones if she wants them. Whatever she's been fixating on that week - a puzzle or her sketchbook. Frank sits nearby and lets her decompress at her own speed. He stopped trying to talk her through things and started just staying instead. It works better.
- Frank called Mel's sister Becca once to ask what her favorite snacks were. Just to have them on hand. He told nobody about this. Becca told Mel immediately.
"You called Becca." "I don't know what you're talking about." "Frank." "...She was very helpful." "What did she tell you?" "That you have strong opinions about Goldfish crackers." Mel opens her mouth and closes it. "The pretzel ones are objectively better." "That's what she said you'd say."

Another take on Abby's mom deciding to get rid of Frank:
She moves in because Abby needs some help with the kids, it's just all too much and they don't have nanny money (and most of the time they don't even have babysitter money). Abby's mom does most of the cooking from then on, and Frank genuinely doesn't put it together, because she's clever about it. No one else gets sick, and he doesn't always get sick, and he doesn't always get sick anywhere near the meal, he doesn't get the same symptoms or anything. He just thinks now that he's back at the ED he's just picking up bugs more easily.
He keeps apologising for how unwell he's feeling, keeps sleeping on the sofa because Abby doesn't want to get sick from him, they can't afford them both going down.
He's a pretty pale guy to begin with, but he's getting translucent here, even Trinity asks if he's okay at some point. Mel is really worried about him, and suggests doing some blood work, but he insists he's fine.
And then... shit, him and Mel get exposed to some rare infectious disease and need to be quarantined for two weeks.
He can't go home to his family!
So Mel offers him Becca's room, it's empty now that she's moved into Middle Hill full time, and he's so grateful he doesn't need to get a hotel or something, so yes of course, thank you, thank you, he moves in with Mel.
Their pitt colleagues drop off groceries outside Mel's door for them on a rota, and Mel and Frank just... vibe. They have a great time. Well, not at first. That very first day, he's showing symptoms of the disease they were exposed to and Mel is really worried, but after a day or so they subside, and after that he makes a steep recovery within three days. She makes him rest a lot and cooks for them and bundles him up on her sofa and they nap a lot watching movies. Frank suddenly feels better than he felt in three months. It's like he has a whole new body, he's not feeling sick at all, nothing hurts, not even his back because Mel's been putting a TENS unit on him every day, and dug her sharp little elbows into his back a few days in too. He's relaxed and rested and well and having the most amazing time with someone he's increasingly realising he's in love with... but the problem is that now his mind is clear for the first time in a while, and he's putting some timelines together.
It's at the end of the first week with Mel, after he hung up the phone with the family at home, that he tentatively asks Mel. "Hey ... can I run something by you? I'm scared I'm going to sound insane..."
Mel sits with him. They're on the floor. Somehow all their big talks this week are always on the floor. And they sit criss cross apple sauce, their knees touching and he tells her that he's been feeling so unwell for so long, and now he's suddenly so good after just a week here, and that it all started when his MIL moved in with them... and could it be that she's poisoning him? Is that insane? And Mel listens and they come up with a plan for when he goes back home. He'll take a sample, and she has a friend at a forensics lab (they know each other from the ren faire) whom she texts and who immediately confirms that yeah sure he'll test a sample for her.
And so they spend one more week in a bliss that Frank knows he'll miss forever, and then he goes back home, and they both go back to work. And two days after he gets back home, he gets so sick he has to actually call in sick. He calls Mel, tells her he has a sample of what he ate, and she actually comes to his house and he sneaks it to her out the window. She drives it to the lab. The test result comes in the next day. The police come to collect Abby's mom the day after. The divorce papers are signed that same week, because all Frank can think about is getting back to Mel's.
no totally it’s just that. taylor dearden thinks that when harry met sally would be on mel’s letterboxd top 4. and when langdon does his big final speech to robby, he says he’s been sober 186 days. which. 186 days before july 4th is new years eve. so he’d be one year sober on new years. and in when harry met sally, obviously. when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible. and when you’re in recovery, you’re not supposed to start a new relationship until you’re one year sober. and he’ll be one year sober when the clock strikes midnight. when they’re watching the fireworks.
