My title is in form of a question because you have to ask yourself "music?" this way because are we really receiving music today. This is arguable. The music industry has changed so much in the last decade that the artists that were successful then are not today. We all know of certain conspiracies behind why music is so terrible today. Some say Viacom, Time Warner and of course the ever so popular Illuminati! And I agree with some people on all of their involvement. But lets consider some facts. Majority of successful artists make the sort of music they make because it has made them millions. I can understand an artist making a certain value of music for commercial success, but do these artists have to continue to make the same recycled music? The answer is no, but why do they continue? It could be pressure from the label, loss of creative control, artist not writing their own material, etc. But what if its because artist have lost their sense of what music is truly about. When I was coming up, as a young lad, I experienced musical movements. Every era since the 50's had its own unique sound. 60's, Jimmy Hendrix, Woodstock, Mo-town. 70's Disco, Pop, Earth, Wind & Fire. 80's Michael Jackson, Prince, Luther Vandross, Lionel Richie, British Pop Rock. 90's Grunge Rock, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Hardcore Hip Hop, Biggie, Tupac, Wu-tang, Jodeci, Dr. Dre.
00's??? I can barely even make a list for the 00's because in my opinion music declined when we hit the 00's. But if I do make a list for this time it would be artists from previous times that are still successful now. So what does that mean? It means we don't have enough history ground breaking artists in the 00's.
10's...Now we are 1 year and 2 months into a new decade and music is worse now than what it was in 00's!! Artists today are nothing more than employees now and their values have changed because of massive amounts of money. Capital is the focus now and not quality. The only time labels focus on quality is when it comes to the quality of money making potential for an album. I was taught that music has to be a driving force for the listener. That they should be inspired and entertained. Can you imagine if music was still iconic the way it once was, how our society would be? I believe we would have a decrease is various forms of negative statistics. Like crime, murders, divorce, illiteracy, high school drop outs, etc. YES call me crazy but I believe music has a lot to do with these statistics. Our parents didn't do half of the crazy things we do because when they turned on their radio they had Marvin Gaye, The Ojays, Teddy Pendergrass, Curtis Mayfield, Sam Cooke, Donald Byrd, Thelonious Monk playing in rotation. So their mentalities were different and more grounded and cultured. Turn on your radio now, whats in rotation?Â
Soulja Boy, Tyga, Lil Wayne, Drake, Nikki Minaj, Young Jeezy, Lil Twist, Trey Songz, Jerimih, etc. Basically a whole lot of ignorant music. So what sort of mentalities do you think people will have if they hear this crap 300 times a day. I'm not dissing I'm just stating the obvious. And if you think I am hating that's fine but do me a favor, do your research on these artists. Take any one of their radio singles and go online and google the lyrics to some of these songs and read the ignorance for yourself. Its amazing how reading lyrics as oppose to hearing them has a different effect. All I can tell you is that when you get an album released from me know that you will be inspired and entertained.
