Gen hadn't seen Ravi for almost two weeks. Every time she left her apartment, she was on edge, worried that she would turn a corner and he would be there. Luckily, that hadn't been the case. It seemed that he had just disappeared off of the face of the earth. Something that he seemed to be good at, Gen thought, rolling her eyes.
Gen had a busy few weeks at work which is why when her friends asked if she wanted to go to a bar with them after work, she, very enthusiastically, said yes. Gen didn't usually frequent bars but she thought that because of how hard she had been working, she deserved a night to decompress with her friends.
Gen had decided to go home after work and then head over to the bar, whereas most of their coworkers headed straight from work to the bar, eager to put the working week behind them as soon as possible. She had decided to change from her work clothes into a simple jeans a T-shirt. Once she had done that, she ordered an UBER so that she wouldn't have to worry about having to pick her car up the next day, probably whilst she was still hungover. She made it to the bar in record time. She thanked the UBER driver as she got out of the car and started walking towards the bar.
As soon as she stepped inside, she felt overwhelmed. The place was almost completely full. She could hardly take a step without bumping into someone or being bumped into by someone.
Just as she was about to start walking towards the bar, she felt someone grab her elbow.
"Gen! I'm so glad you came!" One of her colleagues, Andi, had appeared next to her, pulling her into a hug.
"I'm starting to regret it slightly" Gen joked.
She wasn't entirely sure that Andi had heard what she had said, but they both still laughed anyway.
Andi pulled away from the hug, grabbed Gen's arm and started pulling her through the crowd, towards a booth at the back of the bar. The rest of Gen's colleagues were sat at the table, empty glasses almost covering the entire table.
Gen watched Andi slide into the booth. Andi ushered Gen to do the same but she stayed standing at the edge of the table. Gen glanced down at the table and saw that she had some catching up to do, drinks wise.
"The next round is on me" Gen said.
Her colleagues, who were already tipsy, cheered loudly.
She made her way to the bar, ducking under people's outstretched arms and pushing people out of the way. Once Gen made it to the bar she realised that she may have made a mistake agreeing to get the next round. She was stood at the back of a four row queue of people waiting to be served. She pushed her way through the crowd and eventually got to the bar itself.
"What can I get for you?" The barman shouted.
"Seven beers" Gen shouted back.
It was so loud that both Gen and the barman were having to shout in order to be heard. The barman nodded and started pouring the beers. Whilst he did that, Gen decided to take a quick scan of the bar. The key word being tried. She couldn't see anything other than gross, sweaty people trying to take her place at the bar.
"Miss? Your beers" Gen turned back to the bar to see the drinks she had ordered lined up along the bar. She has clearly not thought this through.
How was she supposed to carry all of these drinks back to her table?
"Do you need any help?" Gen heard someone shout. She turned to her right to see who had spoken to her
No. Please no. Not him. She would take help from anybody but him.
"No thank you" she replied, stubbornly.
The man just laughed and grabbed half of the beers she had ordered. He looked at her expectantly, waiting for her to lead the way to where she wanted to take the beers. She rolled her eyes, aspirated, and grabbed the remaining drinks. She started pushing her way through the crowd, occasionally looking back to see if the man was still following her. He was. Of course he was.
They eventually got to Gen's table. "Geni, who is this handsome man? And is he single?" Gen's coworker, Harry, slurred.
Gen heard the man laugh softly behind her.
"This is Ravi" was all Gen said as she made her way to sit down.
"Ravi?" Harry repeated. "And is Ravi single?"
Harry said, not taking his eyes off of him. Gen glanced up and Ravi who had already been looking at her.
"Erm. Yes I am single. But l've already got my eye on someone" Ravi was still staring at you, his eyes softened.
Gen's best friend, Piper, noticed that Ravi was looking at Gen like he was a lovesick puppy.
"Ravi, why don't you come and sit with us?" Piper asked. Gen's eyes widened. Before she could refuse of Ravi's behalf, he spoke.
"I would love to but I'm here with some of my friends and I can't just abandon them"
"See he is busy" Gen said quickly, reaching her arms out to push Ravi away from her meddling friends.
"Why don't we all just sit together then. You, Gen, us and your friends" Piper suggested. Gen elbowed Piper in the ribs.
"Yeah. I'd be down for that. If that's alright with you, Lion?" He asked, eyes hopeful. How could Gen say no?! Especially when he used that nickname.
"Yeah. Of course. That sounds really fun" Gen plastered on a take smile.
"Okay. I'll get my friends to move over here since you have a bigger table than we do. With that, Ravi disappeared back into the crowd.
"How could you do that?" Gen shouted at Piper.
"I don't know what you mean" piper said, nonchalantly.
Piper did, in fact, know exactly what Gen meant.
When Gen had first moved to LA from Paris she found it difficult to make friends, that was until she met Piper. Piper made it easy for the two of them to be friends. She was fun, outgoing and exceedingly confident. Gen, after Piper had enquired, had told her all about her life in back Paris. She told Piper all about her first love, Ravi.
She told her about how Ravi had completely shattered her heart. Which is why she was furious that Piper had so easily invited Ravi to sit with them.
"You know exactly what I mean" Gen said.
Before Piper could defend herself, Ravi and his friends appeared at the table.
"Hi again" Ravi said, awkwardly.
"Don't just stand there, come and sit down!" Andi said gesturing for Ravi and his friends to sit in the booth.
Fate was not on Gen's side today. Ravi was the last person to sit down and Piper had made sure that the only free space was next to Gen, meaning that Ravi had to sit next to Gen.
"So, are you all going to introduce yourselves?" Piper said, clearly smug that her plan to sit Gen and Ravi together had worked.
"Oh right. Well I'm Ravi, we obviously met when you invited us to sit down." He laughed awkwardly. Gen could see some of her friends cooing at his awkwardness. Suddenly, Gen wanted to be anywhere but at that table.
"Then this is Buck" Ravi gestured to the muscular man that Piper was eyeing.
"I'm Eddie" The man, Eddie, said, clearly wanting Piper to stop staring at Buck.
"I'm Hen" Gen's eyes flicked to a woman in glasses. "And this is Chimney" the same woman gestured to the shorter man sat next to her.
"Chimney?" Gen's friend Paxton questioned.
"Ahh it's a long story." Chimney blushed.
"A funny one I bet" Brooklyn, Gen's boss laughed.
"So, Gen, how do you know Ravi?" Hen questioned, leaning closer to Gen.
"Erm. We met in Paris. When we both lived there" Ravi saw Gen's face, how uncomfortable she looked, and chose to answer the question for her.
"Paris?" When were you in Paris, Ravi?" Now it was Chimney's turn to be intrigued.
"I was 18" Ravi shrugged, acting like he had told his friends this information before.
"You have never told us this before" Buck said, his eyebrows furrowing.
"Erm no you did not" Hen said, in an accusatory tone.
As the night progressed, Gen got to know Ravi's friends. She liked them. She thought that Ravi deserved to have good friends like that. Especially after everything he had gone through. Even though he had hurt her, a lot, Gen didn't want Ravi to suffer.
Well, maybe she wanted him to suffer a bit.
