bruce wayne is the only person on earth to turn his massively untreated ocd into the basis of a successful superhero alter ego. unfortunately this trick did not work on his interpersonal relationships

the problem with using the mental illness that tells you everything that has ever happened is your fault as fuel for your caped crusade is that when you're a sufficiently powerful superhero everything that ever happens is your fault actually. if Bruce is just smart enough and fast enough and careful enough and takes the right care of his tools he can prevent anything bad from happening to anyone. if everything goes perfectly, all of the time, no one will die.

except obviously everything does not go perfectly, all of the time, because even if you do every ritual perfectly you are not actually in control of your environment!

anyway this is why Bruce has like 18 protocols for checking equipment, which is absolutely normal and not overkill, thanks. it's also really normal and not overkill to outsource those rituals to his brood of vigilante children and then, because outsourcing rituals doesn't actually work, to have to double check everything they do anyway. it's not because he doesn't trust them (although he doesn't) it's because if he's the last person to check over the plans then if anything goes wrong it's his fault. much easier to deal with than it being someone else's fault!

- this is also why Jason and Bruce's relationship in utrh is such an absolute fucking nightmare. because Jason died at 15 and did not go through the process of realizing that Bruce's view of how cause and effect work is deeply deeply skewed. he's still operating on Bruce's worldview that everything that happens is Bruce's fault. (when he figures this out is going to make him so mad he won't speak to Bruce for like 6 months.)

- dick, on the other hand, did realize that Bruce is not actually in control of the entire world, through the really healthy and normal process of getting kicked out and meeting people who don't live in Gotham. unfortunately, instead of reaching self-actualization and accepting the things he cannot control etc etc he just substituted Bruce with himself, which is why he is such a secret nightmare martyr.
