at his sisters ... nay , at lady emmeryn’s request, chrom receives the envoy within the halidom’s hall — though “ envoy ” feels far too light of a word for the man standing before him. he heard the rumors. he heard tales of impossible fire, of battlefields scorched in his wake, of a man forged by the flames of war. admittedly, the prince expected arrogance to welcome him in these halls. however, the man before him stands alike a soldier above anything else.

the threat of war lingers in every corner of ylisse’s borders. plegia stirring just beyond, awaiting their moment to strike; tensions rising with each passing day. so, alliances have become necessity rather than luxury.

" leon , " when the angel speaks , church bells ring in his favor. " you remember not what you are ? you're importance ? i have to get stronger. he remembers saying that to his father when he was accepted into police academy. he remembers saying it to major krauser the first time the man knocked him right on his ass during their first training session. he remembers saying it to himself, countless times, over the years, all while experiencing untold tragedy after tragedy. he sees a piece of himself in nero. he's brash and cheeky, but he's also bright. clever, resilient, warmhearted. a good soul in a cruel world that wishes to stifle it.

leon is patient with him, attentive. letting him speak, no interruption, and now it's all starting to make sense. urizen, huh. where has he heard that name before? a thought to store for later consideration. the crease in his brow worsens. " if this demon took all of them out, you didn't stand a chance on your own. " nero is talented, but he is at a severe disadvantage right now. if he had stayed … he withdraws his hands, massaging each of his temples with a thumb and index finger. this isn't good. this isn't good at all. dante made it sound like it was a simple enough job. get in, get out. now he's effectively missing in action, and the realization makes the apprehension in him expand. he eyes the band around his finger. lies of an unforgiving conscious : fault and blame , dare they might try to shift unto another. yet ... he cannot justify to do so. heavy does the death of credo even still haunt him. he'd been told the same , countless times , it was not his fault and yet he harbors that guilt all the same. since then , the vow to become stronger grows daily. life without strength and will could only get him so far , earn him more scrapes and bruises. even now , seems as though the strength in his possession now was not enough. heavy does his head fall , slumping with his back. " i ... " words fail him , anger burying 'neath a creeping desolate feeling now.

but he wouldn’t concede , he wasn’t just some deadweight. he was , indeed , stronger than what he once was. that much was already made clear. downcast gaze lifts with his head when he speaks again : “ we were hired for the same damn job , leon , i shoulda been able to do something. “ his jaw tightens as he exhales , frustration slipping through before he can clamp it down. “ why the hell did he insist on going on ahead? “

soles tapping against the wooden flooring , he’s getting impatient again. “ i’m not just gonna sit around and fucking wait for this shit to get worse. i'm gonna stay here and clean up the city. “ he looks to other , determined. “ ... whether dante wants me to or not. “ a pause , he considers : " ... dante. right. " exhale. he almost forgot he just told dante's husband that he's missing in action , and most likely caused some sort of concern. " you think he's ... " not dead. never dead. change of words with a shake of his head. " stupid bastard is probably gonna be up there waiting for us so he can say a dumb remark about how slow we are. "

“ oh , hey — leon ! “ he’s trailing behind another , nearly tripping over his own two feet. handling correspondence for the police department wasn’t the idle position , but his ( adopted ) father so lovingly insisted. liaison between public and police , obi - wan hoped it would teach luke some sort of skills in communication. such is the reason he’s jogging over to the other , reports in hand. working harder than he thought he would. “ detective castellanos asked for a really , really old missing persons report — " a case that had been closed with no leads years ago , " — told me to give it to you rather than leave it on his desk. i dug it up , of course. it's so old , there's no electronic copies , only paper. " he's reached the other now , with a halt in his stride , smile on his face. / @rotquiem

had it been anyone else , vincent might not have abandoned his position. not even for a second between duties , not even for the faintest illusion of respite. ( as this was his duty. ) but this … this was different. just for the briefest of moments , he allowed himself to indulge in the moment , humor the child at his side that tugged on the hems of his suit.

this child ... he had taken. taken from missions prior. they lingered at his side , a shadow that had learned his pace. when the child was taken from the gruesome scene of death and dismay , there had been a small plea from the shinra employee , carefully worded , bureaucratic in its desperation , something about potential , about future shinra employment , about a child who can be shaped. and shinra , as always , had responded in the only language it trusted: delegation. they had entrusted the boy to him.

there were far worse nightmares in the world , he had told him upon retrieval , voice even , almost detached. we just become numb to them. his words offered less comfort than the truth.

now , looking down at him , something quieter settled in vincent’s expression. not quite warmth , yet not quite relief ... but something adjacent to both , carefully restrained. a faint smile touched his lips , fleeting enough that it could be mistaken for nothing at all. " go , leon , ” he says , “ i have work to do. ”

krimson city has become like a second home to him in the past two, almost three, months. his dad's birthplace and alma mater; it was only fitting he'd do his internship in the same department he originated from, working among the same people he worked with. — before he packed his things and transferred out of the city, freshly adopted child in tow. leon put two and two together, eventually. didn't need his dad to confirm it, but it helped to have it. leon passes by his old home on his way to the station every day. renovated and newly lived in, with even a fresh coat of paint on top. like it was never the scene of a gruesome crime fifteen years ago.

today's his last day at the station. his things are already packed, stored in the trunk of his jeep, ready at his discretion. he has a decent drive ahead of him, so it's better to be prepared. that, and the distraction helped. he had a call earlier in the morning. it's weighed on him ever since, and it seems his mentor caught on a little too quick. ' you don't seem all that happy. ' there's a reason sebastian, @starsacross, is an effective detective. why he chose him, of all people, to learn under. ( that, and his dad worked alongside him. sung his praises, valued their decades-long friendship. all it took was a phone call, and leon was already making plans. ) doesn't mean he necessarily wants to talk about it, however. the wound is too fresh to consider it.

" what gave it away? " he manages a smile, but it doesn't reach his eyes.

in all honesty , when the call came asking for a favor , sebastian couldn’t refuse. not when it came from one of his oldest and closest friends. he’d met leon once before , years ago when he was still just a kid. scared expression with eyes swollen red from crying. it wasn’t the kind of face a man forgot easy ( nor was the crime scene ). now that same kid stood taller , brighter somehow. hopeful and eager , so full of life. an intern trying hard to prove himself. sebastian hoped his future turned out half as good; hoped he’d serve his communities just as well as a full - fledged officer.

so when he catches the boy staring off with that faraway look , he can’t help but feel bad for him. that’s why he finds himself standing nearby now , commenting on leon's expression. “ could be your slump. ” there’s an attempt at humor there , rough around the edges. “ so used to you sitting up straight. ” it isn’t his best , he knows that much. his gaze settles on leon a moment longer before he sighs quietly through his nose. “ you got something on your mind , kennedy. ” a tilt of his head follows. “ i know that look. ”
