i love the dynamic between ki joon and ah jeong. it's got so much going on, which makes it super yummy.

they're exes who work in the same company, but there's no animosity between them. they're friends, even; even though it's a bit begrudgingly on ki joon's side. ah jeong kind of does whatever she wants with him, just like all the other women in his life, including his other ex (who aggressively comes on to him in the stairwell of their office even though she's about to get married--hey ki joon, maybe stop dating your co-workers?) and all his sisters, and his mom, and now his boss (who he's gonna fall in love with asfghjkl). she's the one who dumped him, but she points out that he had no problem with them breaking up. every guy in their office very openly has the hots for ah jeong, and whenever they're all drooling over her ki joon just stays silent; and they don't speak at work cause ah jeong doesn't want anyone to know they dated.

now for all his competence at work, ki joon is kind of clueless; but you only really start to understand this when ah jeong points out/teases him about how he's never been hated by anyone before, and she has to explain to him that someone either likes you or they don't. i love that she says this, cause it thickens their friendship and throws so much about them into relief--he was the ace on his team, while she's the broody chaebol's secretary; he has his own apartment while she has to crash at his place; he has a warm and welcoming (if loud and overwhelming) family while ah jeong has to turn to him when she runs into trouble instead of turning to family members.

they know each other super well, they're comfortable with each other; there's zero romantic or sexual tension between them; ah jeong is 100% unimpressed by him and he just treats her like any other person, not a hot girl to have wet dreams to (BY THE WAY. asdfghjkl. ki joon is out here having wet dreams about his boss who dresses in oversized power suits and is covered from neck to foot 100% of the time and gives him a hard time at work. only he thinks it's a nightmare. asdfghjkl.); mostly all they do is complain about work and comfortably annoy each other.

by the way, i am obsesssssssssssssssssssssssssed with the way gong myung keeps getting typecast as the guy you'd vote most likely to be cuckolded but he's so fucking hot and unthreatened by women that he just ends up being with a bitchy older woman who's soft on him (see: individualist ms. ji young, second shot at love, filing for love; you could even put way back love here if you have an imagination, which i do). gong myung single-handedly made this archetype and has got the market cornered.

Phantom lawyer eps 9 & 10

Basically filled in what was earlier set up re nahyun locking herself up metaphorically due to guilt over causing her sisters death & distancing herself from others. just like jiwoo the girl who locked herself in her room because she thought she caused her fathers death (ep1-2case)

Nahyun saving jiwoo was also her saving herself, opening the door (note form bc i feel tired)

Also i like nahyuns sister giving her her own diary to fill up & write her own story instead of her living by her sisters

4.30am thoughts on phantom lawyer ep3:

I typed this up and saved to my drafts

The cherry blossom scene said ROMANCE!!! I love how even though they only interacted twice this episode, you can see how he has started having an effect on her in small infinitesimal monumental ways

Also thinking about how the ‘possession’ theme relates not just to irang but to nahyun as well. The drama is about Irang becoming possessed by ghosts. This ep shows how he is even willing sometimes to let a ghost possess him in order to comfort them. Obviously both nahyun and irang are haunted metaphorically by past traumas (his father’s death, her dead sister) but nahyun too is linked metaphorically with possession. Nahyun is living her dead sister’s dream out for her, sacrificing her own (which the drama suggests is perhaps as atonement for her perceiving herself/blaming herself for causing her sister’s death?) nahyun like Irang willingly lets herself be posessed. While irang lets his ghost possess him as a gesture of comfort (so that she can eat tteokbokki using his body which will cheer her up), nahyun chooses to be possesed by her sister’s dream, by the life she would have had, had she lived.

According to the promos, nahyun’s character is cold and ruthless. But I think she’s more than that. Her coldness is more so her being remote. This ep showed that the headphones she always carries around are a coping nechanism to help her deal with her trauma when it resurfaces, allowing her to shut everything out when it becomes too much. But it also means that nahyun cuts herself off and distances herself from her full self.

Nahyun is also cold because she is frozen in time, stuck in that traumatic moment when her sister died. Nahyun is cold because she is freezing inside and desperately needs warmth to warm herself up. I like how you can see irang’s presence in her life beginning to thaw her out of the iceberg she’s encased herself in since her sisters death. And how it’s something that’s happening not deliberately or even knowingly by him right now but just by him being himself.

Nahyun is dispossessed, emotionally removed from her life. Nahyun is a ghost in her own life, who isnt fully living it.

Eps 7 & 8 addition:

I wish the drama spent more time on the new bit of info we learned which is that nahyun protested in front of the courthouse after her sister was killed by a (drunk??) driver because he got off with an incredibly light sentence. Is that why nahyun stopped caring about justice after that when she worked at taebak (until irang came and woke her up?) because she became jaded after seeing how the legal system denied justice to her & her sister? Nahyun’s actions post ep1&2 have been about her turning in evidence to the police to get criminals arrested even when its not in the interests of the taebak law firm.

Also the e8 revelation that teenage nahyun didnt understand her sisters diary which contained her dreams of becoming a lawyer. Nahyun took on her sisters dream without getting what it really meant or what kind of lawyer she wanted to be. Which it turns out is the opposite of the kind of law that taebak practises. And is more in line with irang’s legal ethics and values. (Sidenote: i also like how it shows how people dont nec always get everything about their loved ones)

I also read a korean article that completely gave me a new understanding & pov of the drama and in particular nahyun’s story. It mentioned how the drama is about the korean cultural concept of hanpuri. I started reading after about shamanism & how it relates to han & hanpuri.

Lmao bc everyone just keeps talking about yys in this drama and hardly anyone is talking about nahyun. But she is a lot more interesting to me than him.

One of the ways in which irang inspires change in nahyun is how she’s been operating according to a particular legal ethos/rule as survival mechanism to cope with her sister’s death & her guilt surrounding it (ie win every case for her no matter what ti carry out her sisters dream of wanting to become the best lawyer). But irang showed her that it isnt the be all & end all (unlike her ceo boss who punishes her for not winning the case). Not only that but irang shows nahyun that there is another way!!! He tells her how even though she lost, she saved the little girl who locked herself up and wouldnt come out of her room. He makes her start to see that maybe being a good lawyer isnt just about winning cases but you can still do something useful even if you didnt ‘win’ in the traditional sense according to what the legal system says.

Nahyun’s boss in ep2 reveals that nahyun will risk her life to win a case (which is def not a nornal healthy response which should be encouraged!) & we see her doing just that minutes later when she walks into a warehouse of gangsters alone with no backup. Her boss obvsly knows and exploits her vulnerability. I think her toxic work environment where she’s surrounded by cruel male lawyers has been part of whats been locking her in stasis.

Another thing is ep3 has irang working on a case of a high school student idol trainee who’s murdered. He’s literally haunted by a teenage idol trainee. Nahyun too is haunted by a teenage girl who dreams of being an idol - her old self. She is investigating the same case as irang and in doing so starts to revive her dead dreams of being an idol & her memories of her past.

Ok i reread the promo info and i forgot that the production team said about the character posters that “we aimed to symbolically capture that the two aren’t merely courtroom partners but beings who will shake up each other’s worlds. One is thrown into confusion as other people’s stories seep into him, while the other locks herself away while carrying someone else’s dream.”

Omg maybe that is also why nahyun was so affected by the girl who locked herself up in response to her fathers death because she subconsciously recognises that she too locked herself up as a trauma response?

thoughts on the cinematography of the scene where irang thanks nahyun and says that she saves jiwoo

I like how nahyun is framed against the blinds during this scene, the shuttered windows a visual metaphor for nahyun’s inner state of mind. Nahyun is closed off, both to others and to her emotions. When Irang first tells her that he won because of her, she is uncertain and distrustful of his intentions. As she says in ep3, she doesnt trust people. Because Nahyun has become jaded & so trusts only in the steadiness of cold hard facts, she goes to check out for herself later that what Irang said about Jiwoo is true, that she indeed got better.

Nahyun is also surprised when he thanks her and says that she saved Jiwoo. He is unlike anyone else she’s met and his actions often catch her off guard.

When he says, ‘whats so wrong about an attorney losing a case,’ it’s not just words. He’s completely willing to concede that his victory isnt truly his, that he only won because of her choice not to destroy the evidence. And he is shameless about it because to him, its not a show of weakness. Theres nothing embarrassing about not being the victor and its not a reflection of his character or his ability as a lawyer. Not only that, but he is generous in sharing and giving her credit.

The blinds arent completely shut though - there are cracks where the light (and the outside world) comes in (just like Irang), a symbolic representation of how Nahyun is starting to open up. How chinks are starting to form in her armor bscause of Irang. As the lyrics of the second OST goes, “ My heart is blooming anew/And a New Life Begins.” There’s a shift in Nahyun after he tells her about her saving jiwoo. Whilst the scene began with nahyun standing adjacent to the blinds, in the last frames, she’s standing fully in front of the window. When nahyun goes to jiwoo’s school later to see for herself what irang said, she’s triggered and memories of her former self she’d locked up tight within her start filtering through.

The last 2 caps obvsly show how even though they are set up in diametrical opposition to each other, they are coming more into alignment and have more similarities than appear on the surface.

nahyun too catalyzes seismic shifts in irangs world in these early eps. In ep1, her refusal to ask him any questions at the interview makes him realize the truth behind his constant stream of rejections from law firms. Everyone else pretended to entertain his applications whilst secretly writing him off from the beginning which led him on & gave him false hope that he had a chance at getting a job there when he never actually had one. Nahyun, too, dismisses him because of his corrupt prosecutor father but she doesnt try to put on a charade and act like he is actually being seriously considered. What she does to him isnt nice but it does lead to him realizing he wont be accepted by anyone else so the only way to work as a lawyer is to open up his own law firm which in turn kickstarts the drama’s premise of him gaining the ability to see ghosts.

More nahyun & irang parallels!: nahyuns boss says she will risk her life to win a case. Irang tells suah that he will take a risk to help her if it isnt too big (or something like that)
