I went through the pain of actually trying to play Mega Man X6 and beating Nightmare Zero to get my own screenshot to work from. Don't regret the effort but I don't wanna touch that game again...
The Magikeepers are written to be set up for failure, and it honestly bothers me.
They're given blatantly misogynistic rhetoric to make you hate them by default. You're not supposed to like them, and yet they're given some legitimate reasonings. They're even given characters that weâre supposed to like!
This is especially bad because, unfortunately, in a society completely driven by women, the men are left with nothing to do. Therefore, it makes sense for them to want to make something where only men can participate in it.
It's so obvious that excluding women makes them wrong, especially since there's no way to control whether or not you can use magic--that ability is exclusive to women. But that same excuse gives more credence to the idea of there being a men-exclusive club. They keep track of witches who attack innocent people, like the Desscaras impostor we saw. I guess you could make the argument that having witches attack other witches could be a conflict of interest. But there's also the argument to be made that having witches on the team would be a great way to make sure that there is accountability within the witches, and that it would be a bigger conflict of interest to allow these bad faith actors to continue giving witches a bad name.
But, they want Ichi, so it clearly is a misogynistic viewpoint they're coming from, traditions or not. Because they want magic. So in the end it would make sense for them to have at least one witch working with them, but no, we have to emphasize how misogynistic they are, so we hate them. So why put so much focus on making likable characters in The Magikeepers? I don't understand any of this.
Yes, they're in the wrong for excluding women. Yes, they're in the wrong for denying assisting in targeting majiks, and especially World-Hater who threatens them just as much as it does the witches. But you can easily say that their logic is that women handle human-hating majiks, and the men handle âhuman-hatingâ witches.
And that's exactly what the problem is with how the Magikeepers are written. They're presented in a negative light, making you think that they're bad by default, but then they bring up a good point. For example: during these last few chapters, Chun mentions that they need to show no mercy against the fugitive and execute her, giving the impression that this is a bad thing. That it's going too far. But then it's revealed that she has victims in the quadruple digits, justifying what he said.
This is especially going to be bad if somebody makes the statement that the specific wood they use only affects the magic used by witches, rather than magic used by majiks. Then it would give actual reason and purpose to them not participating in the fight against World-Hater. I'm not saying that they're going to do this, but it would line upâŠ
Additionally, their inclusion spits in the face of Gokuraku (and by extension Libro), and everything that he represents and does, by saying there are ways for men to use and combat magic--even if it isn't direct. It takes away all of Gokuraku's reasons for modifying his body, for going to the extremes that he had in order to counteract Bakugami. I guess this is because they try to focus mostly on specific families, but the idea that there exists a way for men to âuseâ magic means that there's little reason for men to pine after a witchâs ability. On the subject of Libro, he could have found a way to break the system and work with his sister...
If this already existed in the universe and always had, there's really no reason for Gokuraku to not try and get his hands on it. There's no reason for him to not try to join the Magikeepers just so he can get his hands on this stuff, and go against the other Magikeepers and target majiks. Youâd think heâd know all about them, just for their weaponry! Are you telling me that in all his research, he never once heard about this wood? That he wouldnât at least try to steal some? But we don't even get much of a reaction out of him regarding the Magikeepers! Not even a simple, "I would have joined them--they even offered me a position--but since they don't go after majiks, I had no interest." They want Ichi, and Gokaraku has proved himself to the point of being a pest to the Mantinel Witches, so there's no reason for them to not want to also recruit Gokuraku! They donât even recognize him!!
He may be from another country, but that doesn't mean that the Magikeepers wouldn't know about him! Surely there are Magikeepers and other countries. And beyond that, the Mantinel Witches know of Gokaraku! He was a problem for them! It comes across as tacked on, with no real thought for the implications! It's such an unbelievably lazy implementation that it's honestly astoundingâŠ

Codfolk are the best adapted to aquatic life out of any seafolk. They're somewhat sluggish on land, but move swiftly through the water to hunt. If the sea doesn't feel very welcoming on a given day, these finfolk will use their robust claws to dig for prey on land, too. Most seafolk have lost their lateral line system, but that isn't the case for codfolk, and this allows them to have exceptional awareness of their surroundings in the water.
