Fox for Fawkes [Minori/Johnny]
Yeah, I guess. [He takes the book back as she offers it, sighing as he looks over the cover again. Glad that he doesn’t have to go back to it right this second.] I’m real lucky, alright.
[His head snaps up at the words “Spark Notes.”] No way, Min! Spark Notes is a deplorable, morally depraved institution that profits off inspiring laziness and inhibiting education for young adults! I couldn’t— [Blinks, then pulls a face, as though disgusted with the sentence that just came out of his mouth. Dials it back a step.] … But, uh. That, and he would know. And. Stuff.
[Clears his throat, then tosses the book on his bed.] It’s no big deal, anyway. I’ll finish it eventually, then he’ll drill me for my opinion or whatever, then we can go back to.. sorta normal, yeah? [Changes the subject abruptly:] You want some dinner if I cook, by the way?
[She watches him as he goes into his mini rant against spark notes. When he cuts himself off, she slowly blinks, and nods.] Mm, right. And stuff, for sure...
Anyways, yeah, I guess sorta normal is worth it. maybe when you’re done reading that, you can send him a book you like that he hasn’t read, and then you can talk to him about that too, y’know?
[Brows raise at the mention of dinner, and as if on queue, her stomach growls. She nods her head.] Oh yes, please! I just got my new fridge but I haven’t put anything in it yet. Been going to Raeger’s the past few days instead.
Fox for Fawkes [Minori/Johnny]
Yeah, that sounds good. I bet we could figure out how to put ‘em up between the two of us. We’re pretty handy and all.
[Sighs. finally settling for putting the tiny foxes on the top of the fridge. They’re just barely visible from here, but it’ll have to do until a shelf has gone up. He turns to Minori once they’re safe and sound and not likely to be lost.]
Because that’s the book my dad got me for Christmas, and he’s only just started talking to me again, and I kinda wanna keep it that way. You should have seen him gushing about it, Min— he drew me diagrams. Of sperm whales. It’s pathetic, that’s the most he’s talked to me literally all year and it was about sperm whales.
Heck yeah we’re handy! I mean-sure Mr. Gunther gives us tips and help and all, but we practically build the things ourselves!
[Watches as he places the foxes on top of the fridge, a questionable choice of a safe spot, but safe nonetheless. She takes a few steps forward towards him, offering the book back to him.]
Oh yeah? Well...it’s good that he talked to you, if about...[She glances to the book]...sperm whales...[Her nose wrinkles as she says it, pausing a moment as she asks herself in low voice why they were called sperm whales...]
Er...well do you have a lot more to go through? Maybe you could spark notes it.
Fox for Fawkes [Minori/Johnny]
A shelf, huh? That’s not a bad idea.. [He carries the fox and micro foxes to his bed, appraising the corner it’s tucked into, already pondering stealing her idea to use himself. In the meantime, he sets the large fox down on his bed, looking for a safe place to keep the tiny foxes so they don’t get lost before they can be properly displayed.]
Huh? [He glances back at her, noticing she’s picked up the book.] Uh. Not my thing. Boring me to tears, kinda. [Starts wandering the perimeter of the inside of his house, looking for a good spot.] I didn’t get really far yet, but it’s not, like— a whole lot of Captain Ahab yet, yeah? It’s like, he’s holed up in his quarters for half the book so far ‘cos he’s antisocial or crazy or whatever, and whoever’s left over is just jabbering on about whaling practices for chapters and chapters. It’s kind of. Tough. To get through.
Yeah, yeah; I wanna put up a couple of them to be honest, for pictures too. If you want, we can go lumbering one day and get them made. I got a blueprint from Mr. Gunther that will show us how to do it!
[She flips through the book, scanning a few lines on each page she stops at, her lips forming into a thin line.] Well if it’s boring, why are you reading it then? There’s a bajillion other books out there that are more entertaining.
Fox for Fawkes [Minori/Johnny]
[He’s torn through the paper the moment the box has been handed to him, too excited not to— his book sliding off his knee and onto the floor, completely forgotten. He’s surprised Minori took the time to wrap the gift considering how exuberantly he was just gonna open it the second his hands were on it.]
Lemme see, lemme see— aw!
[He lifts the larger doll out, blinking at it, before looking in at the tiny foxes left behind. He scoops these up in his hand - one large doll in one, a gaggle of babies in the other.] How cute is this?! It’s like a little yarny family! Thanks, Min! ♪ [Looks around, grinning happily.] Where should I put them? Where’s a good spot?
She smiles as he excitedly opens the present, glad he’s enjoyed them just as much as she did making them.] It’s no problem! I had to wait until we got back here for the black yarn I left here; my mom wouldn’t even let me out of the house to go buy anything! I’m surprised I’m even managed to get back here, to be honest...
Huh? Well, maybe a spot you’ll see them all the time. I wanna put a shelf above my bed to put some of mine on display there, actually.
[She bends down to pick up the book he dropped, fixing it so the book did not close and bend the pages. She looks at the cover, the words Moby Dick written across the top.]
Say, how are you liking this so far?
[Pokes at] Hey, hey! Remember that fox I was making you?
[Looks up as he’s poked.] Yeah? Oh—
[He’s all too happy to abandon the book he’s been reading. It wasn’t his favorite of his Christmas presents (despite it being definitely the one he’d felt the most pressure to enjoy and report back home about). He drapes it, open, over his knee.]
Did you finish it? Can I see?
[Nods her head, slipping off her rucksack and digging inside.]
Here you go! [Presents him with a box, wrapped neatly with a bow on top. Inside are 5 micro crochet foxes, all in different poses, plus a bigger, crochet fox doll. ]
Think of it as the belated Christmas present I didn't get to give you, but now improved since it took me a bit linger to finish the rest.
[She steps up with her entry, placing down a tray with three separate plates on top.]
Uh-hi! So I saw the theme this morning and thought this would be a good dessert to make. They’re called Cassate- er just call them Trapani-style Fried Crescents...
[She pauses, playing with the material of her dress before continuing.] Anyways, the filling is typically just a mixture of ricotta, sugar, vanilla, chocolate chips and a bit of cinnamon, But for today, I used a recipe my mom did a little tweaking to, giving the filling a bit of a coffee flavoring to it...and with the chocolate chips, i suppose it makes it more a long the lines of a Caffè Mocha filling.
So...I started with the dough, mixing together flour, sugar, extra virgin olive oil, white wine, Marsala, a pinch of salt, and just enough water to get a nice, smooth texture with the dough. Once kneaded, i made it into a ball and set it aside in some plastic wrap to sit for an hour.
Next, I started on the filling by first grinding my coffee beans into a fine, espresso powder. Next, I mixed the powder together with the ricotta, some sugar, and a bit of vanilla until the sugar dissolved. I then added the chocolate chips into the mix as well.
With the filling done, it came time to put it together. I rolled the dough out and cut them into little circles, about 4 and a half inches in diameter, while keeping the dough itself a bit thin. But not too thin, or it’ll all come out when cooking, y’know?
I put a generous tablespoon of filing in the middle of the dough circles, put a bit of water on the edges and folded the circle in half. With a fork, I pressed into the seams to crimp the edges.
In a frying pan, I heated up some vegetable oil and fried them until they were brown on each side. I set them on paper towels to absorb the extra oil, and immediately came here with them to dust with powdered sugar and to serve warm.
[Smiles] So yeah...that’s it. Uh- enjoy!

Oh, what lovely things for sale! *Iris picked up on of the fall crops and smiled. It would make a lovely dish, even if she wasn't that great with cooking.* How much are you selling the selections for, my dear? ♪
[Smiles at the woman who approaches the her stand]
Oh- I knew I was forgetting something...[She scratched her cheek, remembering she had left her pricing sign at the farm.] Well, the bell peppers are 50G a piece, or 125G for three, mushrooms 100G per pack, eggplants are 75G for one or 150G for three, carrots are 150G a bunch, and sweet potatoes 50G a piece or 125G for three!
[Frowns deeper at the mention of Marian.] … He’s not, like, a neurologist or anything, Min, he’s not gonna be able to do anything about facial expression disconnect. Besides, that’s not even literally… …
… [Sighs. Gives up on trying to summarize what sarcasm is. Puts on a thin-lipped smile, or something. Sheesh.] There. Happy now?
[Tuts] You don’t know that. He could have been a neurologist at one point.
[Crosses her arms over her chest, shaking her head] No, no, it’s too late. I know a fake smile when I see one.
Oh, I’m glad you’re glad. I’m real glad you’re glad, Min. I’m overflowing with gladness for your gladness.
Gee, you sure don’t look glad, Johnny. Maybe you need the doctor to take a look at your face or something.
Don’t even ask me why I have this. I tried to leave it at home, too, but I think my dad sabotaged me and snuck it into the clothes I packed. Kind of not cool that this is, like, one of three sweaters I even have with me here.
[Laughs] Well, maybe it’s cursed to follow you where ever you go...seriously though this is great, I’m glad you wore this thing.
[Scratches her cheek] Well...might as well go all out...
