When someone asks Artie if she's still single... lol.
I think it’s official, that Taylor Momsen is Lunasari in my head.
Beautiful, and of course, reminds me of Artemaesia.
"Down here, Miss!" Artemaesia pulled back sharply on Zakana's reins, clucking to her quietly as she scratched between the massive, floppy grey ears. The large she-wolf wuffed in reply as she turned her ears to the sound of the voice as it called out to them again. "Miss Elf, down here!" Artemaesia gently tugged on Zakana's lead, and the wolf understood. She veered off of the Pilgrim's Road and down, into the lush grasses that thrived at the side of the river that gently lapped against the silted shore.
"There you are," Artemaesia said, grinning as she slid down from Zakana's saddle. "I was beginning to wonder how I might ever find you again." She untied two leather bags from the saddle and carried them over to the tall, blue-skinned draenei. He'd introduced himself just a couple of hours before as Barum, a Crystal Shaper from Aruuna. He and his little daughter, Melani, had fled when Sun-Sage Kairyx and his Adherents swept in and burned the village to the ground. The people there were simple miners and crystal-shapers. As Artemaesia had picked her way through the burning debris, she hadn't been able to understand why the Sun-Sage had Aruuna, of all places. Surely a few stone-workers were a minor threat?
"Did you find my doll?" Melani asked, shyly stepping back to stand at her father's side. Artemaesia could see that the girl had been splashing in the water. Her hooves, legs, and the hem of her dress were all damp. Chuckling softly, Artemaesia knelt down upon the rock that Barum stood upon, and opened the first of the leather bags.
"Is this it?" she asked, pulling out a soft, worn, plush doll. It was made of a sort of soft canvas, durable but smooth, and off-white in color. The arms and legs were floppy, and it was obvious that more than a few seams had required restitching over the doll's lifetime. The eyes were two thick, black X's, stitched with coarse, black wool. A soft pink smile stretched from cheek to cheek, made from the same wool thread. Artemaesia watched as Melani's face lit up, blue eyes shining ever brighter. She grabbed the doll into a fierce hug, her small face buried in its plush belly.
"Thank you!" Melani cried. "Thank you so much!"
Barum looked relieved as well. He reached out a hand and laid it gently upon Artemaesia's shoulder. "Thank you, Miss. Of everything I had hoped you might be able to find... this was the most important." Artemaesia smiled up at him, finding herself quite comfortable with his presence and the physical contact. The kind, loving way he looked at Melani made Artemaesia herself feel safe.
"That's not all I found," she said, holding up the other bag. Inside was Barum's toolbox, as well as the strange crystalline stone containing Aruuna's Annals. Barum looked as if he might weep.
"Light bless you," he said, his glowing blue eyes shimmering with the build-up of tears. "I can't believe that you did all of this, and for mere strangers...."
"It was the right thing to do," she said, reaching out to pat his arm. "I was happy to--"
"HALT!" The command came from behind, a presence that Artemaesia had failed to notice. Zakana, too, was taken by surprise. She rose from the earth, growling and trembling, waiting for the signal from her mistress to attack. Artemaesia turned her head slowly, catching sight of a heavily-armored vindicator. He was taller even than Barum, and his massive axe was almost longer than Artemaesia was tall. "What is this blood elf doing here?" He spoke with a snarl, as if the words in his mouth tasted poorly. Artemaesia started to reply, but Barum cut her off, stepping in front of her, to put himself between her and the anchorite.
"This is Artemaesia, and she is responsible for saving what is left of Aruuna. Leave her in peace!"
The anchorite scowled, but returned his weapon to its place upon his back. "See that she leaves here quickly," he said. "If she's here when I return...." He left the threat hanging in the air as he returned to the road, his hooves clopping as he went. Barum turned to Artemaesia, and she saw the apology in his eyes.
"It's alright," she said, smiling up at him. "He's right. I should go. War is upon us, and there's no reason for them to trust me. I understand."
"Where will you go?" Melani asked. She was still hugging her doll, but her focus was on Artemaesia now. The elf smiled down at her.
"Back to my Garrison, I suppose," she said. "My children will be waiting for me there."
"You have children?" Barum asked. Artemaesia nodded.
"Twins, a boy and a girl. They're about your age... err... size..." she said, looking down at Melani.
"Where's their dad?"
"He's... not here anymore," Artemaesia said. She glanced at Barum. How was she to explain Inarian's disappearance from their lives, and that she knew not whether he was alive or dead? "It's sort of complicated."
"My mom's not here, either," Melani said. She hugged her doll tighter. "She was a vindicator, and I'm going to be just like her when I grow up." The look exchanged between Artemaesia and Barum told the mage all she needed to know. Melani's mother had died.
"I think you'll be an excellent vindicator," Artemaesia said. Remembering what she'd heard Barum tell his daughter before, she added, "you're certainly brave enough to be one of the best." This thrilled the draenei girl to the core, and it made Barum break into a deep, throaty chuckle. Taking this as her cue, Artemaesia clucked her tongue to Zakana and the wolf stepped to her side. Artemaesia climbed astride, and looked down to salute the father and daughter.
"When will we see you again?" Melani asked suddenly. Artemaesia tried to maintain her smile. Melani's innocence reminded her of her own daughter, Coralyn.
"I'm not sure," she said. "Perhaps someday, when you're all grown up...."
"That's too long! Can we just come with you?" Melani asked. She looked up at her father, her pretty blue eyes pleading. "You like her too! You said she was nice! We could go with her, and meet her kids! I could have someone to play with." The idea was exciting Melani more and more by the second. Barum glanced helplessly at Artemaesia.
"Listen, Lightning Bug, Miss--"
"Artemaesia," she said, realizing that she'd never formally introduced herself. "Sorry. I never said, did I?"
Barum smiled down at her. "It's a beautiful name," he said. "Miss Artemaesia is terribly busy, and besides, we must help rebuild Aruuna, once our people come back," he paused, and sighed. "...if they come back."
"You know," Artemaesia said, an idea coming to her. "If you like, I could loan you my architect and some of my people to help rebuild here. If you could clear it with your people, and with Shattrath and the anchorites, you could have Aruuna back on its feet in no time."
Barum considered her offer as she sat astride the wolf, the gentle breeze flicking strands of her long, crimson hair away from her face and ears. She was lovely, and the first blood elf he'd ever met who wasn't self-absorbed or rude. He knew he would be eternally grateful to her for her help, especially her kindness to his daughter. Melani already adored the little elf, and he wondered if perhaps the Light was guiding him in this direction. What else but divine guidance had led Artemaesia down the road to him in his hour of greatest need?
"Would we be safe there?" he asked.
"I can personally guarantee it," she replied with a smile. "Is this your wish, then? We can meet with my architect, and make plans for the rebuilding. I can outsource the work to one of my outposts nearby. It should take little time at all, hopefully." Artemaesia slid out of the saddle, and turned to Melani. "Would you like to ride, little one?" she asked.
The four of them set off together, Melani comfortably settled on Zakana's saddle while Artemaesia walked next to them, Barum at her side. She was already considering what words she might use to shut down the arguments she knew would inevitably come her way. Draenei were the enemy, even those who had no affiliation with the Alliance from Azeroth. That was going to be her bargaining chip of choice: these draenei were not of the Alliance, and they required her help. If her men trusted her to lead them, then they had to trust her decisions. She glanced up at Barum, and caught him watching her. Clearly embarrassed, he immediately looked away, his cheeks and forehead darkening. Artemaesia couldn't help but smile.
"How far of a walk is it to your garrison?" he asked, trying to mask his feelings of awkwardness. Artemaesia giggled.
"It's quite a distance. I suppose I should ask, how do you feel about flying?"
It's been too long...
Really should revive this blog, I suppose. I have done a little writing for Artie lately, I'll have to post it next time I actually get on the computer.
An Important Assignment
The soft clip-clopping of hooves on stone announced the presence of the mage as she approached the Stormwind City cemetery, which seemed to be unusually full of people. Adjacent to the Cathedral District, the cemetery was ordinarily quiet, populated only by those who tended the graves and the small park they resided in, and those mourning the lost. It was the small gazebo that sat near the edge of the pond that seemed to be the main attraction. Maintaining silence—save for the gentle clopping of her hooves—Xoinae paused to watch. Instead of a funeral, which was usually what the gazebo was reserved for, the event seemed to be a wedding. A priest stood in the center of the gazebo, smiling fondly at the couple in front of him. Xoi couldn’t help but smile. Two humans were there, clasping their hands together as they recited vows which Xoi assumed they’d written themselves. The man spoke with the usual dialect of those who’d grown up in the Eastern Kingdoms, near Elwynn. The woman, however, had the odd accent that typically identified those who’d lived in Gilneas. It seemed likely that she was one of those afflicted with the Worgen curse, though that hardly seemed to matter to anyone anymore. The Worgen had proven themselves capable of maintaining most of their humanity even when they walked as wolf-like creatures among the rest of the population.

Fairy Tales Have Happy Endings
"This isn't a fairy tale."
"What do you mean?" Eilanne sat across from Artemaesia, her cool, callused fingers wrapped lovingly around the mage's small, warm hands.
"I mean that I'm not okay with this anymore. I've been waiting and waiting for him to come home. Eilanne, I thought that if I waited, if I was faithful and patient, it would all turn out alright in the end. But it hasn't. I'm tired of waiting. This isn't a fairy tale, where virtue wins out in the end. The truth of it is, he's not coming back, and while I'll never tell the twins otherwise, I don't even think he cares that he has children who don't even remember his face." There was bitterness and pain evident in Artemaesia's tone, her words sharp and cold, such a change from the person Eilanne knew her to be. She reached up and gently brushed her index finger beneath the mage's chin. The gesture was quite motherly in its intent, and Artie's tears began afresh.
"You want to know what I think?" Eilanne asked, smiling as she canted her head to the right, causing long, silken ebony locks of hair to slip over her shoulder. "I mean, truly, without any sugar-coating?"
"Of course I do," Artie sniffed. "You're the only friend I have who I think would tell it to me straight. Besides Luna, anyway." She hiccuped and reached for the handkerchief that lay upon her knee, using it to wipe away fresh tears. "Luna told me she'll, and I'm quoting her here, 'stab that heart-crushing yeti-fucker'."
Eilanne laughed, shaking her head. The beads and bangles that hung from her earrings tinkled merrily. "Ah, Lunasari. She adds color to the room, even when she's not in it herself. I believe she meant it, too." Eilanne paused, making sure she had Artie's full attention. "I hope that she does something to him. If he yet lives, he deserves to know that he did wrong by you."
Artemaesia's expression shifted into one of genuine surprise. "Truly?" she asked. The priestess nodded solemnly.
"Oh I know, I shouldn't advocate such things, but I'm not a priestess of the Light, either. I have trouble believing that the goddess would condone the treatment you've endured at the hands of such a careless man. If there is no justice to be had when a faithful, patient woman is finally broken, then there is no justice to be had in this world at all."
"Do you think it's alright that I just... consider things... over?" Artie asked her, twisting the handkerchief in her hands. "Without telling him to his face... without... knowing whether he lives? What if he's dead, and I scorn him for never coming back when it isn't exactly in his power to do so? What then?"
"Is the outcome any different, either way?" Eilanne rose from her seat and crossed to the fire, lifting the kettle from its perch and pouring two cups of steaming water. She pulled a small pouch from her belt and sprinkled the contents of it into each cup, then retied it before returning to sit across from her friend, offering the mage one of the cups.
"What's this?" Artie asked.
"A blend of dried herbs, my own tea concoction. Nothing too strong, but it should help you relax." Eilanne blew over her own cup, watching the steam waft away. "You didn't answer me before."
"Sorry." Artie held one hand over the steam rising from her tea, the heat and moisture gathering in her palm. "I suppose the outcome isn't the same. Perhaps it's best if I simply assume he's dead, regardless of the truth? Then I don't have to... to hate him so much."
"Do you hate him?"
"...not at all. That's the problem." Artie set her teacup down, and clasped her hands, pressing them to her chest. Eilanne thought this to be a touch dramatic, but let it pass. "I love him still, but it isn't the same as it was once. He was a good man, and I know he seemed to love the children when they were born...." More tears leaked from Artie's eyes. "I just don't want to be alone anymore, I don't want to have to avoid the company of others for the sake of propriety or the avoidance of temptation."
Eilanne's slender ears perked at this. "You've been tempted?"
Artie shook her head. "Not... not really. I've met a few who've been kind, but... I've never let myself believe anything was possible."
"Well, that should change now," Eilanne declared authoritatively. "I think you should move on, Artemaesia. Inarian was good to you, but he is no longer in your life. For whatever reason, he hasn't been found, and it's best to consider both him, and your commitment, gone." She reached out to pat her friend's hand gently, watching as more tears streamed from Artie's eyes. "Let him go, sweetheart. It's okay now."
And so Artemaesia did. She wept until her head ached and her eyes were dry and red, but at the end of it, the heaviness that had weighed upon her chest was gone. Eilanne followed her as she went to her room and, for the first time since he'd given it to her, she removed the golden engagement ring and its golden chain from around her neck, securing it in a small white box. She was about to place it in the bureau when the priestess reached out to stop her, shaking her head.
"How about I take that?" she asked. "You don't need the reminder. I'll keep it for you, in case you have need of it someday for some purpose, but it isn't wise to keep it with you."
"You're right." The mage nodded in agreement, her long crimson hair flipping forward to hang in her eyes until she brushed it aside with slender fingers.
"Now," Eilanne said, after tucking the box into her bag. She wrapped her arms around her young friend in a tight hug, stroking her head affectionately. "You told me before that your situation with Inarian wasn't a fairy tale, and I agree. However... that doesn't mean you still can't have one. So I want you to find your fairy tale, Artemaesia. I had one of my own until my Galadorn passed away, so I know it's possible." She smiled down at Artie as the little mage smiled up at her, nodding.
"Thank you, Eilanne. You really are a good friend to me."
"I try." The priestess winked. "Now, we probably should relieve Luna of babysitting duty. I've no doubt she loves it, but it makes the city officials nervous when the three of them are seen together without supervision."
Artie feels...
