“It’s going pretty great! I got some of my powers back!” He was still waiting for the chance to really get to use his shield, as long as it wasn’t against someone like Jasper. He preferred fighting smaller monsters.

“Yeah, a bunch of my friends are here now!” There was still the pain of being without his dad, though. “But…no Lion…but! But! Take a look at my new pet!” He fished around in his backpack before pulling out Cookie’s pokeball. “Come on out!”

          “ Powers? You never told me about anything like that, at least, not the specifics! What do you have? Lasers? Fire? That crazy creation power where you can make anything you want just by thinking about it? C’mon, spill the deets.  ”

   There was a light gasp as she stooped downwards, hand ushering the curious pig at her side towards their surprise guest- while he was just as excited to meet new friends as she was, he was always a bit shy.     “ This is the pinkest cat I’ve ever seen except for that one in the Shack. But that was fake. “

What. Was. She. Thinking. Here she is, face-to-face with someone who definitely isn’t a dweeb by the name of Almond, and it’s awkward — embarrassingly so. Peridot begins fumbling for a plausible excuse to flee, but thankfully, rescue comes in the form of nicknames and light banter.

“ W-What, no! The name is Peridot! Per-i-doh! ” she huffs, somewhat miffed. It’s one thing to be called Peri-dawt, but Shamrock? Fauna?

“ Then again, I guess I can see you being Chocolate — ” Wait, no. While food-based names are common in Dreamside, that’s not what the stranger meant. Her arms cross her chest as she realizes her blunder. “ I mean, your hair! It’s chocolate. Colored. ”

She’s going to kick herself later.

          “ Peridot? My mom used to have a bracelet with one of those gems whenever we went to a big party that she needed to dress up for- a pretty gem for a pretty person! “     --- Well, she wasn’t exactly sure of which specific stone it was, but it was better to fib and bring it back up when needed instead of fumbling like a dummy. That’s what Candy always said. 

          “ Well, Chocolate isn’t really it even when I really want it to be. Instead, you can call me Mabel: Mabel Pines,  “     --- The teen extended a hand as lips curled to form a bright smile.     “ Sounds to me like you’re  from Candyland or something awesome like that to have such cool names. I’ve always wanted something cute like that but my Grunkle Stan says food is for pansies.  ”

“Hm?” It was that girl with the pig and braces! He hadn’t seen her in forever! But he felt a certain kinship with other kids in the city, especially since a lot of the were running around with no supervision. He was lucky he had so many adults to make sure he didn’t get in trouble.

“Hi Mabel!” He shouted across the street, cupping his hands around his mouth. He carefully glanced up and down the road before dashing across. “I haven’t seen you in forever.” He was pleased she remembered him though, and even more pleased she was calling him by a nickname.

   Eager to do the same, she was slightly set at ease when he decided to take initiative before she did- there were a few incidents that she’d had with cars that pushed her comfort more towards golf carts than these roaring cans of flammable gas. Excitedly, she continued to wave until he crossed safely before speaking again. Wouldn’t want him to get distracted.

          “ It’s real good to see you ; how’s it going? Found all your friends yet? Oh! Or how about that Lion you were telling me about? ”

“ A-Almond? Is that you? Wait up! ” Perhaps it’s due to a fitful night’s sleep, but Peridot, after ditching her coffee shop seat and a half-eaten croissant, practically sprints up to a complete stranger.

“ Wait — you’re not — well, ” ( wrong cute girl, abort, abort, abort, ) “ N-never mind! ”

          “ Almond? “     --- She mimicks her, parroting her words before she twists on her heel to face the voice of distress with a smile to combat her awkward realization. Stopping in your tracks to find a stranger rather than the welcoming face of home is bad enough but to be met with criticism at it is no better. The self-appointed leader of the welcoming committee knows better.

          “ I’ve always thought of my hair being more chocolate, but I can definitely see that! I could call you... Shamrock- or, or Fauna!  ”

          “ Hey!! “     --- She waves, jumping around wildly from across the street in her best attempt in grabbing his attention, but with the honking cards and revved engines, getting her voice to project in the middle of it seems more difficult than she’d initially thought. To make matters worse, she doesn’t quite remember his name  ( though she’s pretty sure she met one of his gem friends who’d clarified it even if it didn’t fully stick ).     “ Hey Steve!  ”     // @firstgemboy   ❤ ‘d for a starter!!
