This is Shibam, Yemen
Also called âThe Chicago of the Desert.â
Guess when those high-rises were built?
If you guessed the 1970s, you guessed wrong.
Way wrong.
Shibam is an estimated 1,700 years old.
Shibam, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for its distinct architecture. The houses of Shibam are all made out of mud brick, and about 500 of them are tower blocks, which rise 5 to 11 stories high, with each floor having one or two rooms. While Shibam has been in existence for an estimated 1,700 years, most of the cityâs houses originate from the 16th century. Many, though, have been rebuilt numerous times in the last few centuries.
Shibam is often called âthe oldest skyscraper city in the worldâ. It is one of the oldest and best examples of urban planning based on the principle of vertical construction. The city has some of the tallest mud buildings in the world, with some of them over 30 m (98 feet) high, thus being early high-rise apartment buildings. In order to protect the buildings from rain and erosion, the walls must be routinely maintained by applying fresh layers of mud.
The minaret of the Al-Muhdhar Mosque at the nearby city of Tarim is 53 metres (175 ft) high, and recognized as one of the tallest earth structures in the world.

Non-Boring Environments that need Fantasy Representation
Tropical Rainforests
Scrubland/Dry Forests. For extra effect make them the sort that burn very often; some native plants never germinate until after a fire, and some animals not only rely on fire to smoke out prey, but may even start them themselves.
Savannas/Tropical Grasslands
Temperate Rainforests. I almost didnât include this bc New Zealand is covered in them, and thatâs where they filmed Lord of the Rings. But tbh, no one really knows about them, so it belongs here
Taiga Forests
Barren Tundra, perfect for some extreme seasonal dichotomy
Polar Ice Sheets
Desert-Grasslands (arguably the same as Scrubland but Australiaâs good at adding its own twists)
Barren Desert
If you like Cacti, look at American Deserts like the Sonoran
Salt Flats
Soda Lakes and Alkaline Lakes
Madagascarâs Karst Limestone Formations
Madagascarâs Spiny Forests
Madagascarâs Baobab Forests
Madagascarâs Subhumid Forests (Madagascar is cool as hell ok)
Danxia Landforms
Badlands/Mountainous Deserts
Steppes and Highland Prairies
Flood Basalts
Newly-Formed Islands, still rife with Volcanic activity
Now for Underwater Environments, sure Coral Reefs are cool.
But there are SO MANY other kinds of environments for aquatic settings, itâs unbelievable:
Seaside Cliffs
Archipelagos. Not just Tropical Island chains like Polynesia (Moana anyone?) but also Coldwater Archipelagos like the Aleutians.
Tidal Flats
Bayous/Cypress Swamps
Tropical River Basins, AKA Seasonally Flooded Rainforests
Mangrove Swamps/Deltas/Beaches
Kelp Forests
The Open Ocean
Coastal Seabeds
Rocky Beaches with Tidepools
And there are a LOT more I could name but this post is already obscenely long as is, if youâd like to toss in your own go right ahead, but my point is if you limit yourself to European Deciduous Forests youâre a wimp.

Want to know how corrupt the pharmaceutical industry is?
See this?
This is called Afrezza. Itâs an inhaler for diabetic insulin. Thatâs right. An inhaler. That means no more needles. Itâs only for fast acting insulin, but it could still vastly improve the life of a lot of diabetics.Â
Imagine having to constantly prick yourself with needles to keep yourself alive, and then suddenly thereâs a new product that could change the whole way you live your life for the better.
And hereâs the thing: it works. It works really really well. People with diabetes that have been lucky enough to have used it think itâs amazing.
But sadly, itâs probably going to end up as a failure because the pharmaceutical company (a French company called Sanofi) that was in charge of marketing it didnât care enough to actually try. Not only that, but they made it incredibly expensive so hardly anyone could afford it. Most people have never heard of it, and the way things are going, no one else ever will.
Please reblog this to raise awareness of this product and hopefully get another company to market it. It could change so many lives.
It would change and save my life. If thereâs one thing I hate in the top 5 most in this world. Itâs the fucking pharmaceutical, money mongering, heartless industry.
I honestly just want to pack my bags and go travel the world and see and explore everything possible i just want to travel the world but i want someone by my side along my journeyÂ
