Some work I (Rebecca D. Harris) did with latex back in 2012 when exploring the transitory and impermanent nature of 'home'.  Covering a brick wall, which in this case was the windowless end of a house, with muslin I then paint through several coats of latex, this created an indexical trace of the house.  It picked up the colour, texture, dirt and even smell of mould at the bottom of the wall.  You can see on the detailed image where it picked up the chalk drawings done on the wall by neighbouring children.

Everything that might interpose itself between the thing and us in apprehending and talking about it must first be set aside. Only then do we yield ourselves to the undisguised presence of the thing.
