Thanks for letting me draw your lil guys! I love them so much :D
USS Defiant–shaped portable Compact Disc player (1996). According to its packaging, this CD player is a "Genuine Replica" of Star Trek Deep Space 9's 'tough little ship' which also played sound effects (ie skipping tracks played a phaser sound).
Produced in Ronkonkoma, New York by TeleMania, the Defiant CD player also included (beyond the obligatory BASS BOOST) Starfleet-branded headphones and a cassette car adaptor.
Incidentally, TeleMania also produced a Star Trek Communicator Universal Garage Door Opener, which of course allowed avid Trekkers to open every garage door in the known universe.
some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.
I couldn't remember the word "doorknob" ten minutes ago.
ok but the onelook thesaurus will save your life, i literally could not live without this website
REBLOG TO SAVE A WRITER'S LIFE
If i saw that damn thing in my livingroom i'd stomp on it till it was a small brown stain
anyways thank the lord for Keevan
I love when the star trek alien actors decide to give their characters traits that they personally think of as the respective alien species influence, because they never line up with other actors decisions. Like we have early seasons Nog, who has that very particular Ferengi accent and vocal rhythm, and then his uncle Quark shows up and he just sounds like a guy who owns a bowling alley. Garak, who moves in this strange reptilian fashion, has his eyes wide open, and then his dad shows up. And its like. Yeah thats just Paul Dooley. Hes not even acting thats just Paul Dooley right there. What we learn from this is that Garak is just a freak.
Jeffrey Combs making Weyoun a slavering, twitchy, nervous wreck around the Founders while Christopher Dennis was just like “sup, momma?” At his Changeling.
The opposite: Molly Hagan has such big beautiful wet eyes that all the following Vorta actors had to 👁️👁️ to emulate her
happy pride to this fucking thing susanna thompson does with her mouth
happy pride to this visible saliva that avery brooks decided to leave in the final cut of rejoined
im going feral thinking about this. if modern trek had this energy instead of its weird plastic sexlessness i would buy twelve paramount plus subscriptions
my trick for getting through grad school is learning to navigate the quadrants with all their nuances
Hey, no homo, but I am sitting on the broken swing set out back in the perfect, quiet, 2:00am blackness and picturing the softness of your voice and the darkness of your eyes with such perfect and terrible clarity that it feels like I'm choking on my own heartbeat.
Now I'm eating croutons straight out of the bag.
Still no homo ?
I'm gonna level with you, friend: I am eating these croutons gay style.

Every single time I see a take that amounts to "if you write about X happening, or like fiction where X happens, you like X" I'm reminded of this one time I was at a casual friends house as a young kid. We were in her room, pretending to "be orphans" escaping from an evil orphanage and having to take care of each other and fend for ourselves. It was all very Little Orphan Annie/All Dogs Go to Heaven and based on the 80s pop media.
And this girl's mom comes in, hears what we're playing and gets all MAD and UPSET. She says that if we play act something, it's because we want it to happen. So her daughter must WANT HER TO DIE.
First off lady, we were 6 year year olds, so take it down several notches. We barely had a concept of mortality for fucks sake. She made us feel so guilty and ashamed, because she was taking our game personally.
Now I have a 5 year old. And sometimes she looks at me and says "pretend you're dead, and I have to -" Whatever it is. Some adult task she's assigned herself.
And it's just so transparently obvious that she's practicing the idea of having to do things on her own. Which is exactly what 5 year olds are supposed to do. I actually find it very flattering that the only way she can envision me not being available to help her is to be literally deceased. Otherwise, obviously, she wouldn't have to do scary hard things alone.
It's a natural coping mechanism. She's self-soothing about what would happen if I wasn't there by play-acting independence in a perfectly safe environment. She's also practicing skills she needs, and making up excuses for practicing them on her own, without taking on the responsibility of being able to do them by herself all the time yet.
Humans mentally rehearse bad this in their brains all the time. We can do that by ruminating- going over worries over and over again, which tends to lead to anxiety and helplessness and depression. Or we can do it with a sense of play- by recognizing that the fiction is fiction and we can dip our toe into these experiences and expose ourselves to bad things without actually being injured.
My daughter does not want me dead. And I don't want bad things to happen in real life. But fiction and pretend help me face the horrors of the world and think about them without collapsing or messing myself up mentally.
okay but do you ever think about the inherit twisted intimacy of torture?
two people spending hours together, lost in the same process. fingers on your skin. the only voice you hear for days on end. the only presence you know. the closeness of having your skin be torn apart under their fingers. having another understand perfectly just how much pain you're in. having to rely on them to treat your wounds, being you water and food so you survive and heal. cry before them, break and have your every emotion on display. having them turn into your whole world.
do you get it?
and then -- the way the torturer can use it as another tool.
torture that leans into intimacy. hands stroking your hair as your warm blood pours out of you. soft whispers urging you to stay awake when the pain is overwhelming. strong arms holding you as you cry, those same arms holding you down as you thrush from agony. suddenly gentle fingers pulling your skin back together because you need to heal before you can take more. having your begging be answered with words of comfort that don't stop the torture. waking up to their gentle smile before the pain begins anew. hearing your name on their lips. taking all the comfort from someone who hurts you, because that's the only comfort you'd ever get.
or -- torture that is clinically, intentionally devoid of intimacy. no questions, no words spoken. the only touch you feel is that of the blade and the thick gloves. not being allowed to see their face. knowing no matter how much you beg not a single word of yours will be acknowledged. never being addressed until you forget that you're still a person. being trapped in a hell with not an ounce of comfort. isolation while still seeing someone daily.
or -- a torturer that combines the two. that goes from all the intimacy to none if you do something wrong or if their mood changes. they come in in gloves and you cry and beg to be acknowledged. constant anxiety from not knowing what kind of day it'd be. getting used to their hands closing your wounds before they're gone. breaking down and trying to do your best to fix whatever mistake you've made to have it back. getting used to no skin contact until they take off the gloves. flinching away from touch as if it burns only to immediately lean in. twisted gratitude when they hug you. always fearing losing what little comfort they give you.
you get it, right?
