복수는 나의 것 [Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance] (2002)
Directed by 박찬욱 [Park Chan-wook]
Cinematography by Kim Byung-il
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is about a deaf and mute man that tries to find a way to help his dying sister who needs a kidney transplant. He does not have enough money and ends up contacting a black-market organ dealer to find one, but this action leads to a series of unfortunate events, both due to his own actions and bad luck.
I chose to take an excerpt from Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, because I saw a major theme of this film relating to Mahatma Gandhi’s quote of “an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind”. When I first heard this quote, as a young angry angsty child, I didn’t really believe in it. However, in recent years, I am starting to see more truth in it throughout my own personal life.
I decided to choose this image of a rose being replaced because I thought it showed the duality of this theme, as well as being a symbol for the film itself. Vengeance has the “pro” of finding retribution, but also has the “con” of inflicting pain that comes with it. I also believe that a rose is a very passionate type of flower, and passion is deeply engraved into this movie; all of the character’s actions had a lot passion behind them, such as the main protagonists action to try to save his dying sister by any means necessary. Another quality about a rose is that there can also be many meanings found within the flower, and even flowers in general. The largest example of this flower though, I believe, is how the rose shows the contrasting sides of life and death, which also seems to be a very large part of this film as well. A red rose might show symbols of life and love, whereas a black rose could symbolize death and despair.
If you don’t mind reading subtitles, I really suggest watching this film. The director did an amazing job, the cinematography is very astounding, and the cast also played their roles very well.
