PINNED POST ― ❛❛ The questions run too deep for such a simple man.❜❜
ATLAS; Stellan McLynn, manager of the Supernova Expedition. Penned by Kit. About section found below the cut.
OVERVIEW —
E.T. Maverick had all of the resources and options in the universe available to ensure that the crew of the Supernova Expedition would be the crème de la crème. Still, somehow, Stellan ended up managing and co-leading the whole thing. Supposing that Maverick sees something special in him, Stellan doesn’t want to be there. He doesn’t even seem to have any meaningful aspirations besides finding his next drink. The mystery of why he's on the expedition—of why the hell Maverick chose him, of all people—will hopefully be solved, but so far, folks aren't holding their breath.
Stellan's opinion about the orphan's unusual childhood is quite negative. While he appears to have questionable morals, to say the least, he is critical of their upbringing and seems to expect their unique maladjustment’s. Is that why Maverick appointed him—because his opinion of the Supernova Girls is so different from the public's—because he sees them as children raised in labs, not superheroes? Or is this a point of tension between Maverick and Stellan?
The irony of Stellan is that he’s never successfully managed anything in his life—his family, his relationships, his money, his career— all in shambles. And now, he’s stuck supervising an expedition against an apocalyptic threat.
POSITIVE TRAITS —
Stellan appreciates a good time, even if it usually involves alcohol and globe light effects. He’s a breath of fresh air in that regard. The orphans are used to a controlled, peaceful environment, and Stellan is swooping in like a fun uncle. He tries to get people to lighten up, to not take things too seriously (admittedly, even things that should be taken seriously), if only so that his lack of work ethic doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. He’s quite wishy-washy about social norms if they would impede his good times. As a result, he’s easy to get along with, if you don’t mind his carefree attitude. Stellan has the charm of a conman, which, combined with loose morals and general heedlessness, results in someone who doesn’t hold grudges (unless he's dealing with repeat offenders. Cough, Loop, cough.) He can’t be bothered with that sort of preoccupation. Any tension he has with crewmates is easily forgotten—he moves on swiftly from any disputes. And lastly, Stellan, for all of his faults, shows up when it matters. It’s like he has a sixth sense. Whenever you least expect him to make an appearance, there he is, being weirdly dependable.
NEGATIVE TRAITS —
A combination of heedlessness, an easy-go-lucky attitude, and overall hedonism makes Stellan deeply unlikable to certain personalities. Not only that, but Stellan is an alcoholic. Sure, he’s high-functioning, but an alcoholic is an alcoholic. At times, he’s unavailable because his mental faculties are not all there. It’s probably obvious that he’s avoidant (re: alcoholic), but he’s very avoidant! He always seeks to take the easy road out and would sacrifice personal glory and morals, or take advantage of the general goodwill from people, to get out of unwanted situations. He displays a multitude of wretched conman tendencies. Stellan’s reluctance to be on the expedition makes it difficult for everyone else to have him around. He’s surrounded by hard-working, passionate people, and worse, he’s the one managing them. His job performance leaves a lot to be desired. Stellan, at the very least, has enough respect for everyone involved to not be completely useless, but he’s definitely doing the bare minimum, and it's easy to tell.
UPBRINGING —
Stellan is a complete unknown to everyone (indeed, even Starry doesn't have the complete picture) but Maverick. Apparently, the two know each other pretty well. Maverick is far from an idiot; he knows what he’s doing, but neither of them is the sharing kind. As a result, very little is known about where McLynn hails from. The general public was eager to dig up as much as they could about the members of the expedition, but McLynn didn’t get a lot of hits. According to him, he was born on a small, insignificant planet that he hasn’t returned to since he left. He didn’t share its name, but described it as mostly being covered in water. It’s no surprise, then, that he loves tropical environments. That’s all he’s ever shared on the matter, though, and has never offered information about his past.Â
