jack was raised by a single mother who worked two jobs to put food on the table and keep a roof over their head in a podunk town in alabama. he was the oldest of four kids and the only boy. he gave up a lot in order to essentially raise his younger siblings from the time he was five to the time he was seventeen.
when he was fifteen, his mom married a guy named fred. fred was an abusive alcoholic who absolutely could not stand jack. jack and fred would argue a lot and jack would often put himself in between fred and his younger sisters.Β
when he was seventeen, fred and jack had the worst fight they've ever had. it ended up with several thousand in property damage and fred in the hospital. due to his age and his sisters testifying that jack was just protecting them since fred was high and drunk, jack was given the option to join the military in order to avoid jail time. jack accepted.
jack went into the army and actually excelled in the structured environment. it was also the first time that he actually got to do things for himself without worrying about his siblings.
he would often send money to his mom until she contacted him and said that she believed him to be unstable and that she did not want anything from him. that hurt. a lot, especially considering how much of his life that he'd given up for herΒ and his siblings.
jack buried himself in his army career, joining the rangers at twenty-four.
in 1998, at thirty-two, jack left the army after an injury during a training mission. to him, it felt like he was slowing down and he couldn't stand the thought of that. he knew that he wasn't meant for desk work, so he decided that it was time for something new.
he spent the next several years, jumping from job to job and place to place in search of his sisters. the oldest two believed their mother's lies about jack being unstable and refused to have anything to do with him. janice, the youngest, was far more doubtful of her mother's claims and invited jack to stay with her in hope county, montana.
jack was there for a couple of years before janice begged him to join the new church that she was a part of. she said that they would help him find purpose again because she was genuinely worried about his mental health. she could tell that her brother was deeply depressed and was worried that he'd hurt himself. after a short while, jack agreed.
jack was doubtful of joseph's claims at first, although he did agree that the world was utterly fucked. however, he was convinced to keep an open mind by joseph's brother, jacob. the two of them had a few beers together and many long discussions before jack was finally agreeable enough to join the project.Β
he excelled in the project, especially under jacob's command. he was one of the ones in charge of training new recruits that got sent to jacob and even lent a hand with the conditioning stuff, although he wasn't a huge fan of it.
right after the third faith joined the family, jack was assigned to be her bodyguard by jacob due to a particularly nasty incident. jack was a bit grumpy at first since he preferred the whitetails over the henbane, but ultimately agreed.Β
