Safir gave her a small smile and squeezed her hand. “I’ve been told I have more patience than most people, so I wouldn’t use me as your baseline.”
“It’s true that you seem to have more patience with us than most people,” Sterling said. “Likely why Fin and Lotus love you so much.” Both could be a handful.
"There's no one quite like you darling." Talia reached to press a kiss to his cheek. "Finny was always so fussy, but Saf could calm him down and figure out what he wanted." There were times she looked back and wished she could have been more present in those moments. If she had stayed longer each visit maybe... best not to dwell on that. "Your patience must be why you're so good at teaching too."
"He's sure got a lot of knowledge he could pass around. Have you taken on many apprentices before?"
“Dates?” That actually got Sterling’s attention. “Nothing wrong with her dating, but it didn’t seem like something she was interested in.”
“She’s been trailing after a barista from a cafe near the university,” Safir said. “It’s cute.”
"Awwww, so even the busy bee is out finding love." Cordelia was grinning ear to ear. "I'm surprised too. I swear that girl is always on a job when I hear from her."
"She does live at her job site half the time. Hopfully the poor thing can make it work." She peeked over at Safir. "Sometimes you can get lucky to have someone willing to wait."
“We planned on spending a week in Capriccio City, so I’m sure we’ll have time to see plenty,” Sterling said. “I doubt Hazel will take up most of that time.”
“I dunno, if you get her talking she’ll just keep going and going,” Safir said. “Nothing wrong with that, though.”
"When she's talking away with that big grin it doesn't even matter what the subject is, I don't mind listening." Cordelia placed a hand to her cheek. "I remember her being a curious little chatter box as a kid too when we visited. It's so cute how that never seemed to change."
"Now she's actually made herself a career out of that curiosity." A little smirk crossed her face. "Maybe you'll also be spared the super long chats if she's still preoccupied with her little dates."
“Well, unlike Coda I’m not a huge media consumer, so I guess I can’t say much,” Safir said.
“I read quite a lot of books,” Sterling said. “The grandkids and younger insist movie versions are never as good.”
"Goodness, we really sound like a bunch of out of touch old folks." Talia couldn't possibly keep up with all the new things being made, but she had enjoyed a few movies over the years. "There is this one place that makes the experience a little more special. A big outdoor theater that has a live band. You two should check it out. They've got one here, but the one in Capriccio City has some of the students performing and it's quite charming."
"Might have to see if we can work that into the agenda. It doesn't feel like it was that long ago since we did some traveling, yet there are already so many new things to do." If it meant they extended their trip a little, it wouldn't be so bad.
“If the stories from the young woman in Tessitura are anything to go by, modeling isn’t a great career.” Safir walked over to Talia, wrapping his arm around her waist. “And if I recall, there’s a movie director who really wants to recruit you, too.”
"You mean that old sleazeball?" She snorted, waving a hand. "Not even in his dreams. He claimed to watch several of my performances and said I was his new muse. Considers himself a patron of the arts. The look in his eyes told me all I needed to know."
"Wooow, you'd really kill it in a movie though. I'd go see it~" She'd probably try and drag everyone she could to see it too.
"None of his films would be worth seeing. Even with talented actors, his vision does not come across well." She let out a dramatic sigh, leaning into Safir. "If I didn't have my movie date with me, I would have been bored to tears."
“Which is good, because Leo seems to think you’d make a good model for some of it,” Safir said. “He told me to ask if you were available to do some pictures to have in the booth.”
“Sounds like he’s already thinking business,” Sterling said. “You’ll have to tell us how it goes.”
"Weeeelllllll, I don't usually to agree to such things, but I can make an exception in this case." Talia gave a wink. "I'm happy to help a true artist show off his craft."
"They'll probably sell out quick in that case. You could be such a popular model with how stylish you are."
"Mmm, I could, but I'd never. Modeling careers are so stifling."
“I wouldn’t go that far,” Safir said. “His parents are great people and he adores them.”
“So that just means you’re uncle like for us,” Sterling said. “It sounds like you’ll have fun, though. They said Leo made the engagement and wedding rings, so if the stuff he’s made for the convention looks as good as those, you guys will probably be swarmed.”
"He's so talented. I don't even know anything about the the little cartoons or games they're from, but he's recreated them so well. I'd wear them." She gave Safir a proud pat on the shoulder. "Learning from the best."
"You have always been a fan of shiny things." Which made figuring out gifts to send her so easy. "So convenient you're with someone who could make just about anything you could want."
“Well, I have had a very long time to practice my handwriting,” Sterling said. And then he turned to Safir. “Auntie said you were helping your apprentice at a convention soon.”
“Ah, right,” Safir said with a laugh. “One of those things for popular media, y’know like shows and comics. Leo picked up a hobby of making jewelry from those and I guess his friends said he should sell it. I’m just going to help man the table so he won’t be alone. Coda’s pretty excited, too.”
"Oh! The newly weds right? We got to see the photos while we visited Evie and Andreas. Everyone looked so great." It was always fun to see people get all dressed up and fancy. "It seems it was quite the party, they had the perfect day."
"It really was. He may call him an apprentice, but I think Saf basically adopted Leo." Talia snickered softly. "Now he's even helping out with his little hobbies~"
"I do still send letters," Sterling said as Safir moved to take off the rest of his gardening gear. "There are some things that just don't belong in the family group chat."
"I'm not even in there and I know that's not true," Safir said. "Poppy's shown me a few times. Gets pretty crazy in there."
"Mmhmm, I can't believe I've been missing out for so long. They keep making all these little side chat thingies. I'm not sure what they're all for, but it's fun to catch up on." Talia was still trying to learn how to use most functions on the phone. "But I do agree, a hand written letter sure can't be beat by a text."
"Truly, and he has the loveliest handwriting." Cordelia leaned against him, patting his arm. "I always have him write the birthday cards we send out."
"Well, I do need some hobbies outside work," Safir said as he took off his gardening gloves and went to pat Sterling on the shoulder. "Trying not to be a workaholic, but I've never been that bad." At least not as bad as some of the members of the royal family he could mention.
At Talia's question, Sterling said, "We're here for a few days mostly visiting my siblings here in the city. After we see the royal family, we're going to see Puck and Charlotte. My mother said Poppy is back staying with them as well."
"My, so popular." She grinned. "It's so cute to see all the siblings still keeping in touch. You can probably run into one or two no matter which city you go to."
"Some stayed close, but so many really branched out into the world. At least modern technology makes it easier." Cordelia sighed. "There was something nice about writing letters though."
Sterling smiled as he trailed after his aunt. He hadn't been quite as close with Safir as some of his other siblings were, but he still considered him basically an uncle. He hadn't seen him in a while since he didn't travel to the capital a lot, so he was glad Safir wasn't still at work. The forge was hot and sweaty.
Safir was, indeed, out in his garden, tending to some plants. When he heard the back door open, he turned and smiled. "Hey, guys, been a while."
"It's been too long." Cordelia walked around admiring some of the flowers. "Wow, I didn't expect to see such a full garden out in the city. You have such a green thumb."
"A man of many talents isn't he?" Talia grinned as she moved to Safir's side. "What all are you two up to while you visit?"
“Yes. The queen has mentioned wanting to visit with us as well, but we wanted to stop to see you first.” As they stepped in, he couldn’t help but glance around. “How is Uncle Safir doing?”
"Now I feel so special~" Talia grinned as she ushered them in. "He's been a little busy helping out his apprentice with a project. They're going to have a booth at some convention in the city."
"Oh that sounds so fun. You'll have to send us pictures, I want to see what they make." Cordelia clasped her hands together with a big grin. "He's not still working today is he?"
"Well not on that anyway, he's out tending to his garden, come on."
@stealthsleuth
Talia had told Sterling she was staying at Safir’s house now, and considering Safir hadn’t moved in about three hundred years, Sterling knew where that was. So when they arrived in the city, that was the first place they headed. He’d messaged to let her know they were close so at least it wouldn’t be surprised.
“Good afternoon, auntie,” he said with a smile when she answered the door.
"Awww, if it isn't one of my favorite nephews and his cute wifey~" She wrapped him up in a big hug. Pulling away to pat his cheeks before switching over to squish Cordelia. "Glad you two decided to go traveling. Come on in."
"You two are the first city stop of course."
