Was a masochist and so ashamed of it that he pretended to himself that it was a matter of discipline rather than sexuality;

Made other men whip him;

Had a sexless relationship marked by romantic feelings with a male teenage student;

Claimed to want to be anonymous and left alone, while somehow always ending up in the spotlight;

Was either idolised or loathed by the general population;

Hated himself.
