Happy birthday to the late, great Wah Ming Chang. The Chinese-American sculptor and artist who hailed from Hawaii was the designer of the original Star Trek flip communicator as well as the tricorder.

The man from whose imagination came the tech of the 23rd century was born on this day in 1917.
