Moon Child (2003)
Crazy theory time - Genesis in FFVII Rebirth
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is just around the corner, guys. In less than 5 months from now, we'll be diving back into the world of FF7 and I can't wait! Where's the story gonna take us? What's gonna happen with Zack and his timeline? Will Genesis make a comeback? So many burning questions. Since most people's theories focus on either the main party's story or Zack and the new timeline's mystery, I would like to talk about Genesis.
While I know a lot of fans are worried about this character's possible return, I am way more concerned about what Zack being alive in a different timeline could mean for the overall story arc than I am about Genesis. However, just like with Genesis, I decided to trust that the devs know exactly what they're doing. I want to be excited and hyped about this game without having to fear it might completely end up sucking storywise.
Remember, they took characters like Biggs, Wedge, and Jessy, gave them a complete overhaul, and made them more loveable and impactful characters than they had ever been in the original FFVII. More importantly, they even managed to make Yuffie a like- and adorable character (if you've always liked her, good on you). They get it. They understand their characters, they understand the importance of localization, and they're more than capable of doing the same for characters like Genesis or the Tsviets, should they show up in the new games.
As I explained in my last post, the story of Crisis Core Reunion sets up a nearly perfect redemption arc for Genesis. Whether the devs will go down this road I do not know, of course, but it's fun to theorize and think about all the possibilities. And for Genesis' character to come back, there are quite a few.
First, let's take a quick look at all the hints relating to Genesis that have been planted throughout Remake, Intermission, and the newly shown footage of Rebirth. Right at the start of Remake, you come across a poster for Banora White at the train station. It's an ad for apple juice. This poster is spread all over Midgar and it implies that Banora exists (or existed, before it was nuked) in the world of Remake. Banora was Genesis and Angeal's hometown. It's where the Banora Whites or dumb apples, as Genesis lovingly calls them, grow.
The next big hint is Professor Hojo mentioning S and G-type SOLDIERs in a board meeting with President Shinra as possible candidates to be crossbred with the Ancient (Aerith). Interestingly enough, Hojo shouldn't have access to any G-type SOLDIERs as Project G was shut down after being deemed a failure in CC's story. Shinra proceeded to use the Project S method of Jenova gene insertion into SOLDIER candidates because it was the superior method that produced better results. There shouldn't be any G-type SOLDIERs left unless Hojo is already experimenting on Genesis and the Tsviets at this point.
It would make sense, too, since Nero and Weiss were the two SOLDIERs who brought Genesis back to Midgar after the events of CC. Coincidentally, they're also the ones who next make an appearance in Intermission, but by the time they reappear, they've already been spliced with G cells and turned into Tsviet members. This strongly suggests that Hojo has access to Genesis one way or another.
While it is said that Genesis sealed himself away under Midgar, it is also a fact that at the end of CC both Weiss and Nero were wondering whether he would agree to become their "brother", alluding to the Deepground experiments, in which they and a couple other elite SOLDIERs would be spliced with Genesis' cells, producing the Tsviets (aka the "hellspawn of G").
We don't know at what point Genesis seals himself away, for he is unconscious when taken back to Midgar. So it's likely that he had no control over what happened to him directly after the ending of CC and there is a definite time gap between him being imprisoned in Deepground and him finally sealing himself away. (I assume he's being held against his will since he had deserted Shinra earlier and had absolutely no intention of rejoining them.)
This would mean that at the time of the board meeting (about 5 years after the events of CC), Hojo is very likely referring to the Tsviets when mentioning G-type SOLDIERs and probably already involved in the Deepground experiments. He also may or may not have access to Genesis himself at that point. We can't tell.
It's unclear for how long Genesis was in Deepground and how he got away eventually, but we do know that the Tsviets were created without his consent and he also refused to help them when they asked him to join their battle against the restrictors shortly before the events of Dirge of Cerberus. (The restrictors are part of another stupid DoC storyline that you don't need to worry about. They were the Deepground leaders before Weiss and Nero took over). My point is: Genesis wanted nothing to do with them and no part in any of it.
This is important for what I think his role in Rebirth and/or the game after that could be. While the secret ending of DoC made it look like he is set up to be the next villain, I think we should be focusing more on the ending of CC and what that set him up to be: a hero. Bear with me. I'm simply saying I do believe that if Genesis will make a return, he will be one of the good guys. One of the guys trying to save the planet. An ally. And here's why I think that:
At the end of Crisis Core, having been defeated by Zack, who was able to finally make him see reason, Genesis is left with a newfound perspective, gratitude, and most importantly self-growth. He sits there, sharing a dumb apple with a friend (Zack and through him Sephiroth), expressing gratitude and respect. He finally swallowed his pride, overcame his biggest weakness, and from here on out it'll allow him to grow.
Before he is taken away by Nero and Weiss, probably into a long time of captivity in Deepground, he leaves his newfound conviction in the form of the final act of Loveless behind:
Even if the morrow is barren of promises
Nothing shall forestall my return
To become the dew that quenches the land
To spare the sands, the seas, the skies
I offer thee this silent sacrifice
The sacrifice that Genesis makes is most likely him sealing himself away in a slumber until the day the world faces another crisis. By that time he'll be ready to reclaim his pride as SOLDIER and protect the planet from a new threat.
Since we don't know where Rebirth is going to take the story, we can only guess what that danger might be that finally awakens Genesis from his slumber. I do have a few theories, though, that I'd like to share with you.
Firstly, I do believe that Genesis will appear in Zack's timeline, and not in Cloud's. The reason for that is simple. Cloud and Co. have no idea of Genesis' existence (Reeve might, but that's a long freaking shot). Also, Cloud's party won't return to Midgar until MUCH later, so them coming across Genesis is highly unlikely. Zack, on the other hand, not only knows of him but also happens to arrive back in Midgar probably just a couple of days after Genesis was brought back there.
Additionally, Zack is still on the run from Shinra. He might have survived, but that alone didn't buy him his freedom from the company. So both he and Genesis are now Ex-SOLDIERs 1st Class who harbor strong feelings against Shinra. That's quite a feat to have in common.
From watching the recent Rebirth trailers it's my understanding that Zack will arrive in Midgar only shortly after a devastating tornado swept through Sectors 0, 1, and 8, presumably killing Aerith, Tifa, Barret, and Red in this timeline. It might be interesting to point out that the Sector 7 plate dropping back in Cloud's timeline caused Shinra's underground laboratory to be exposed. Whether that was part of the Deepground lab is not clear, but it is likely. I'm mentioning this because the tornado sweeping through and wreaking havoc in Zack's timeline might have done the same. If so, then Deepground could be exposed and with it, Genesis' whereabouts. It'd be one way for Zack to find him.
Why do I think he needs to find Genesis in the first place, you ask? Well, Zack is confronted with yet another crisis. He might not be aware of it (at first), but he exists within an alternate timeline. One in which his girlfriend just died and Sephiroth probably had his hands in creating. On top of that, he is about to lose his best friend, too. As an earlier trailer suggested, the Cloud in Zack's timeline will not recover from the Mako poisoning but instead succumb to the same fate as the other Sephiroth clones, heeding Sephiroth's call for the Reunion at the Northern Crater.
Zack doing everything in his power to help his friend and put an end to Sephiroth once and for all seems like a reasonable scenario. It would also beautifully mirror the events happening in Cloud's timeline. That way both Cloud and Zack, in their respective timelines, are heading for the Northern Crater for the ultimate showdown with Sephiroth.
And here's the thing: Cloud has a party on his end, so why shouldn't Zack have one? Unless they aim for Zack's chapter to play a lot like Crisis Core, he will probably have allies of his own. I think Genesis is going to be one of those allies.
Will he be playable? Now hold your horses. Maybe, but probably not. Maybe he will only appear in one short scene to guide the freaking way. However, I think that would be a huge waste… Instead, I would like to see Genesis team up with Zack. They wouldn't have to make Genesis playable for that. He could be a guest character, too. Other characters that could end up on Zack's team would be Cissnei or Kunsel (who would need an overhaul as well, of course), or even Biggs or Jessy.
By the way, Reno and Rude are unlikely to play a big part in Rebirth, because Reno's Japanese voice actor died and they haven't replaced him yet. So Reno won't appear much in the game. The devs said he'll have a bigger role in part three, though.
That being said, I do think that Genesis will be some kind of ally to Zack eventually, and maybe even help him defeat Sephiroth on their end of the timeline. It would be an ideal way to bring Genesis back, without messing with the "actual" events of the game, aka Cloud's journey.
Of course, we know far too little to make any detailed assumptions, but I believe it's entirely possible for Zack to seek out Genesis in his chapter/world/timeline (whatever you want to call it. I think Nomura already established "world" instead of "timeline", right?). Maybe getting to Genesis is one of the challenges Zack has to face. Maybe he has to go through Deepground and the Tsviets to get to Genesis.
This theory is based on the idea that Genesis will have some kind of redemption arc, which I think would make most sense following the events of Crisis Core and it would be the best way to exploit this character's full potential. But since I tend to lean too much towards wishful thinking like this, I also tried to look at other options and came up with two more theories.
Let's say Genesis does not get a redemption arc (because let's face it, the story is already convoluted as it is, so maybe they don't wanna overdo it). Then in what other ways could he make an appearance in Rebirth or the game after that? The simplest answer: Like Weiss, as a battle simulation. It'd be lame, but entirely possible.
If they're going to integrate him into the story, though, they do have a couple of other options. One would be directly linked to Intermission's storyline. Since Sonon was killed by Nero, there's a high likelihood that Yuffie won't just let that go and you'll end up going after Deepground in either a sidequest or maybe even as a part of the main story. It would make sense for Yuffie to team up with Vincent to hunt down the Tsviets, which might eventually lead them to Genesis.
In this scenario, Genesis would most likely be an enemy, though. Due to the circumstances, it might boil down to Genesis seeing them as a threat and the whole thing ending in an optional boss fight.
I just don't see Genesis being a big part of Cloud's timeline. As I've said earlier, it wouldn't make much sense for them to come across Genesis outside of some sidequest, since Genesis is sleeping below Midgar at this point of Cloud's timeline. He has zero connection to any of the characters, and unless he's linked to the Tsviets plotline that Intermission introduced, there's simply no way they would run into him.
Another theory I have is based on a scenario that happens way later in the story: the Weapons awakening. When Sephiroth summons meteor, the Weapons awaken to protect the planet from the impending threat. But since Sephiroth creates a barrier around the Northern Crater, they fail to sense his presence and instead wreak havoc on the towns and cities. This in turn could wake up Genesis from his slumber. Also sworn to protect the planet, he could end up aiding our heroes in battle against the Weapons, either in Cloud's world or in Zack's. Or maybe even in both? How badass would that be?
And that's the whole extent of my theories. I'm not saying that any of this is what will really happen, and while I like my redemption arc idea, I'd also love to be completely taken by surprise. Hopefully, the devs came up with something that will be a thousand times cooler than anything I could ever think of. Either way, I am 100% certain that we will see Genesis again. And I can hardly wait.
We need to talk about Genesis
Genesis Rhapsodos is arguably one of the most hated characters in the compilation of Final Fantasy VII. The reasons people dislike the SOLDIER 1st class vary: some can't stand the simple fact that a Japanese rockstar lent him his looks and (in the Japanese version) voice. Others just find him to be an obnoxious asshole who quotes a stupid poem every time he shows up on screen and whose only motive is to be as annoying as he possibly can.
Most hardcore FFVII fans, however, think that Genesis had absolutely no business appearing in and messing with the single most important plot point of the original story, the Nibelheim incident. Granted, his inclusion in that scene didn't have any real impact on the plot. Sephiroth would have found out and lost his shit either way. Still, many players were upset that Crisis Core's version of this scene seemingly implied that it was Genesis who pushed Sephiroth over the edge.
I would like to discuss Genesis because I think he is a gravely misunderstood character. Whether he should be in FFVII to begin with is another story altogether, though.
To understand Genesis a little bit better, we first have to take a look at how he was created. Genesis is the only character in FFVII that is based on a real-life person and as such the process of his creation and involvement in the story are unusual.
As we all know, Genesis' appearance is based on GACKT, who also lends him his voice (Japanese version). Now let me just say this: I can understand everyone who hates Genesis simply because he's GACKT. I do. If you'd tell me they're planning to base a character on Justin Bieber and put him in my favorite game of all time, I'd be hella pissed, too. (Please note that I am in no way comparing GACKT to Justin Bieber. I just needed to make it sound as horrible as I possibly could because I assume that is how some people feel about this issue after all…)
Originally, GACKT was supposed to only contribute the theme song for Dirge of Cerberus. However, Tetsuya Nomura being the little GACKT fan boy that he is, thought it would be a brilliant idea to have the rockstar appear in the game as a cameo. Thus we got the secret ending in Dirge. At this point, the character was nothing more than a cameo which was codenamed G. And that is all it ever was supposed to be.
Fast forward to the beginning of the development for Crisis Core: Hideki Imaizumi, the producer of the game (and allegedly also a GACKT fan?), thought that leaving G as such a little cameo role would've been a waste, so he went and asked GACKT if he'd be up for a bigger role in CC and they met and started creating Genesis together.
And that is a crucial thing to know about this character. Genesis was created by a Japanese actor and a Japanese producer for a Japanese game specifically. GACKT knew exactly who Genesis was supposed to be and could easily play him accordingly. On the other hand, Imaizumi knew he had to keep Genesis as vague of a character as possible to keep a certain balance between the original set of characters and the one that was based on a rockstar. Or to put it another way: he had to tone down GACKT's presence.
Make no mistake. The devs at Square Enix know very well that Final Fantasy VII is sacred to the fans and that they have to tread extremely carefully with any changes or additions they want to bring to the universe. So while Imaizumi might have gotten the go-ahead to put GACKT in the game, I can almost guarantee you it was under a condition like GACKT's character mustn't overshadow any of the original characters and his involvement in the story couldn't have any real impact.
Unfortunately, it is exactly this half-hearted attempt at keeping the balance between GACKT's presence and the original characters that ultimately hurts Genesis' portrayal. They basically gave GACKT half a role to work with (which he did masterfully, mind you), and shrouded the other half into a cloak disguised as a shallow poem from the world of FFVII that was meant to make Genesis blend in better.
It's not stated anywhere, but I strongly believe having Genesis quote Loveless two-thirds (if not more) of his screen time was done in an attempt to keep his character and with that GACKT's presence as vague as they possibly could. And they most likely did so in order not to make anyone mad that GACKT/a rockstar/celebrity was in their favorite game to begin with.
Ironically, all that this accomplished is the complete opposite of what I assume the devs had in mind. People didn't get Genesis, found him and his endless quoting of a more or less pointless book to be annoying, to say the least, and blamed most of it on the fact that the character was based on GACKT.
Now to come full circle, part of why Genesis is the way he is is technically because he is based on (and was also partly created by) GACKT. And you can blame GACKT all you want, but he did a superb job of bringing a character to life that is censored by the game itself. He had very little to work with to portray Genesis. And I'd argue it's probably precisely because he helped create Genesis, that he was able to express the character in what little lines he had apart from the Loveless quotes.
That is why the Japanese version of Genesis works for me. GACKT makes it work. I, too, could have done without the Loveless bullshit, of course, and it helps that I happen to like GACKT and am not mad about the mere fact that he is in a game I am super passionate about.
However, when Genesis is not voiced by GACKT, he kinda falls apart and that is a huge problem with the localization of Crisis Core. The English voice actor was not part of the process of creating Genesis, he does not have a fundamental understanding of who the character is and what drives him, and most important of all, he cannot make a stupid and pointless fictional poem sound nearly as beautiful as a professional Japanese singer can.
That is why in the Western version of the game Genesis mostly comes across as a whiney, bitchy drama queen, whose only reason for existing is to quote a dumbass book and annoy the living hell out of everybody around him, eventually driving Sephiroth mad enough with his antics to make him become the greatest villain in video game history.
Sadly, a lot of Genesis' fragile and unstable character gets lost in translation and dubbing, so to speak. I'm not blaming the English voice actor, he most likely had even less to work with than GACKT did and probably tried his best to make some sense of the few lines he had. But it just wasn't enough to make Genesis a like- and relatable character. It doesn't help that the game never tried to do this character justice and so he ends up rubbing people the wrong way, especially in the Western version of CC.
Yes, Genesis is extremely prideful and ambitious, and he obviously has a narcissistic side to him. Contrary to popular belief that is not the full extent of his personality, though. He often comes across as aloof and uncaring, and he only ever opens up to a couple of his closest friends, but that is mostly due to him trying to keep his emotions in check, which he is not very good at. He cares more than he lets on and too often his emotions get the better of him, causing him to overreact in an often extreme manner.
He has dreams of his own and he takes great pride in chasing after them relentlessly. His happy place is at the top of the world with his friends by his side. And this is a vital point. He wants glory and fame and to be a hero, but he wants to share those things with his friends (Angeal and Sephiroth). This is conveyed numerous times throughout the story by his continued effort to share his passion for loveless as well as his dumb apples.
Genesis' greatest weakness is his pride, though. Not only does it complicate his relationships (especially with Sephiroth), but it also dictates his worldview, locking him in quite a one-tracked mindset. Upon finding out that his body is slowly falling apart (aka degenerating), his pride and dreams shatter and crumble, and with nothing left to hold onto he spirals out of control, eventually losing himself in self-pity, regret, and anger. Being a fragile and vulnerable person emotionally, Genesis is deeply hurt by these sudden turn of events, by the betrayal of the people he trusted (his foster parents, Shinra, eventually Sephiroth), and by his uncurable illness.
At first, he tries to get a handle on the situation, he tries to find a cure for himself, and he tries to get his friends to join him, asking for their help (in his way, mind you), but he gradually becomes unstable and in the end, attempts to take the world down with him as a last resort.
It's important to note that all three friends, Angeal, Genesis, and Sephiroth go mad after finding out the truth behind their births/creations. However, Genesis is the only one of the three who gets a chance to redeem himself, because he finds it in himself to overcome his weakness. Being defeated by Zack, Genesis finally swallows his pride, can express some kind of gratitude and respect towards Zack (and Sephiroth in a way), and finds a new perspective thanks to that.
Genesis is dealt multiple blows by fate, he makes grave mistakes throughout his journey, and by the end of CC's story, he is utterly defeated. But he doesn't die (like Angeal) and he doesn't succumb to madness (like Sephiroth). Instead, he learns and he grows, both as a SOLDIER and as a man. It makes him painfully human, and if not like- then at least a bit more relatable, in my humble opinion.
The way Genesis was written and portrayed in (the localized version of) Crisis Core was unfortunate, to put it mildly, and didn't do the character any justice. I was lucky enough to have been able to play the Japanese version when it first came out on PSP and while I did have some issues with the character (mostly due to the Loveless quoting), I found myself liking him and enjoying his story arc.
The reason I am writing this is that with the release of FFVII Rebirth already in sight, many fans are worried about the very possible prospect of Genesis making an appearance somewhere down the line. After all, there are hints of him in Remake, even more so in Intermission, and some of the new footage of Rebirth also strongly suggests that we might see Genesis again in the near future.
So I am here to tell you not to worry. Admittedly, when it first became clear that they were going down the Deepground rabbit hole, I started to worry myself. I'm all too aware of how bad the Dirge of Cerberus storyline was, and I do get that a character like Genesis (let alone the freaking Tsviets…) might not fit into the concept of the FFVII Remake trilogy. At least not the Crisis Core version of Genesis.
However, I've been thinking about this a lot and I eventually concluded that the FFVII devs are most likely just as aware of what an issue Genesis could be if not handled correctly as we are. Think about it. They handled the localization of FFVII Remake exceptionally well. They will not destroy all that hard work by throwing in a character that doesn't fit. Nope. I can guarantee you that if they really put Genesis in this or the next installment of FFVII, then they will give him a serious overhaul that will take the Western localization into account, as well.
Genesis is the only character in the Compilation that has the potential to completely redeem himself and the story of Crisis Core set him up perfectly for just that. I believe there is a reason why CC Reunion was released just before Rebirth. There is a reason the devs want the players to learn about this story before going into Rebirth. They set up Zack's story to be more comprehensible. But I bet they also want to remind us of who is sleeping under Midgar, silently awaiting his chance to prove his worth and potential as a character and an addition to the story.
Toshi: Why is Sho crying? Kei: He thinks he stepped on a ladybug. Toshi: Thinks? Kei: It's a red M&M, but I didn't have the heart to tell him.
Son: I have a bad feeling about this... Toshi: What do you mean? Son: Don't you ever get that little voice in your head that tells you if you're going to get into trouble? Toshi: No? Son: That actually explains so much.
Kei: Okay, help me, please? Shinji: I've got two words for you. Kei: I bet they won't be helpful. Shinji: Your problem. Kei: I was right.
Kei: You have to be nice. Sho: I am. Kei: You threatened them with your gun. Sho: But I didn't shoot them.
Sho: I'm gonna say that there is at least a chance that I didn't think this through completely.
Sho: I don't get why we need driver's training. Driving is just like Mario Cart, except slower and you can't throw blue shells at people. Toshi: Please never drive.
Kei: I need you to look me straight in the eye. Sho: You can't expect me to look at those eyes and be straight.
Toshi: *takes a photo of Kei and shows him* Kei: I look so sad. What filter is this? Toshi: None.
Sho: I was just thinking... the sniper shoots people... and I'm a person. Kei: Those are both true statements, but I don't like the way you're connecting them.
Sho and Yi-Che: *staring lovingly into each other's eyes* Son: *loudly opens a can of diet soda* Sho: We were having a moment. Son: And I'm having a drink.
Sho: Scuse me. I have to go make a scene.
Sho: Miss me with that 'weapon accuracy' shit. I'm shooting everything. I'm laying down cover fire. I'm shooting the walls. I'm shooting my teammates. I'm shooting myself. My accuracy is 100%. Y'all just don't know what I'm aiming at.
Kei: Pfft, I don't need anybody. Kei: *meets Sho* Kei: So that was a fucking lie.
Sho: I have a confession. Kei: Go for it. Sho: You know all those times I had nightmares, and you let me snuggle with you in bed? Um, half the time those nightmares were just an excuse to sleep next to you... Kei: That's terrible. Sho: I'm sorry-- Kei: You should make up for it by sleeping next to me every night.
