Anni rolled her eyes in mock indignation. âHey, I waitressed for like a year before I got the job at the gym. There were a lot of moments that made me wish I was deaf just so I wouldnât have to listen to all the weird stuff people were saying anymore.â Stella was often so sarcastic, Anni sometimes felt like she had trouble understanding what the other girl was getting at and figuring out how to respond, and she wasnât sure whether to blame her being bilingual or her general inability to communicate like a normal person (probably the latter). However, she always seemed to fit perfectly into a place like the Limelight, and somehow, conversation always felt easier with a drink in front of you. And with this topic of conversation, Anni actually felt grateful for Stellaâs attitude. Helped keep her from getting panicky.Â
âOf course they are.â She giggled at the twilight simile, and as she could imagine perfectly how peopleâs attitudes were. The events probably brought out the conspiracy theorists in a lot of them. âThatâs amazing. Add in âthey had sex for moneyâ and you have it all in that story - money, sex, crime.â Prompted to share her own views, Anni felt herself being dragged back into reality, and her heart greeted her with a fluttering, reminding her that what they were talking about had actually happened, one way or another, right where they were living. She crossed her arms on the counter. âWell, I think dissolving a body in acid would take a lot of criminal energy and planning. I just donâtâŠI mean, I donât know Hector at all, but I just canât imagine a student from around here to be so âŠ.ruthless and brutal, you know? Iâm actually still ninety-five percent sure that she just got fed up with work and decided to move to the Bahamas without telling anybody. I mean, havenât we all been tempted to do that at some point? The police might just have been acting on clues that they think mean something but actually donât.â She sighed. âNot like I know. But maybe Iâm just telling myself that to make myself feel safer. Is that very ridiculous? I mean, itâs not like anything has tangibly changed, butâŠ. to be honest, Iâm not exactly looking forward to the idea of walking home on my own through the darkness tonight.âÂ
âI like the Bahamas theory,â Stella laughed. âItâs about where I am with school. Except I think Iâd go farther than the Bahamas. Maybe one of those islands in the Pacific. Like Tahiti. Thatâd be fucking awesome.â She smiled at the girl and started cleaning some of the empty glasses left behind. Stella was always a daydreamer. She never had the money to travel, but wished she could. Leaving everything behind was always on her mind. One day she thought, one day sheâd see the world.Â
âEh donât be too nervous. The amount of people that I watch walk out of here alone, just to come back the next night unscathed is enormous. But if you donât mind waiting a few minutes while I clock out, Iâm headed back to campus, I can keep you company,â Stella nodded her head towards the back of the bar, suggesting she was on her way to clock out. She wasnât on clean up duty tonight and the bar was thinning out. She didnât want to be around for the extra hour to deal with the super drunk, get jipped on tips, and make virtually nothing when she could be in bed. The last hour would be easy for the second bartender to pick up on his own anyway. âPlus that way, if anyone jumps out of a bush and dries to dissolve your body in acid, youâve got a witness,â She joked. âNot sure how well the story would sell, itâs lacking compared to Hectorâs story. it might be a tough sell, but Iâd play it up for you.â
