i watched the lights fade into the distance
i wanted nothing more than to run down the tunnel after it
i yelled out with all the voice i had left in my throat, begging the conductor to stop
i stood there on the side of the tracks as the train whisked you away
i could still hear the rumbling of the engine
i stood there alone for a while
i waited there at the station for the next train to arrive
i lingered on that concrete platform, wondering if anyone would return
i looked to my right and saw the bright flash of a headlight as another train pulled in
another train approached, stopping at the station for a minute
two more trains came and went
i decided it wasn't worth it
i waited until the sun went down, and the cicadas began to sing their soft lullaby
i waited until a janitor appeared, carrying a yellow bucket filled with water and a large mop
i followed him as he escorted me out
i echoed his good wishes as he disappeared
i don't think i ever went back to the train station
