A Poludnytsia is a spirit in Slavic folk belief, the embodiment of noon heat and heatstroke. In order to avoid her attacks, it was seen as best practice to avoid field work at the height of day.

In Italy we have Sa Mama e Su Sole (the mother of the sun), this particular name (and her lore) is from Sardinia.

She's beautiful and deadly, she appears during the hottest hours of the day, when, as we say "the sun breaks rocks".

She was used as a cautionary tale especially for children, in order to keep them at home during those hours, because if you go out and you bother her, she will kiss you on the forehead, leaving you burned and with a bad fever that will last for days.
