but, the thing is
even polyester fabric was higher quality in the past
yes, not all of it, but, still, a noticeable amount of older polyester was...nicer.
yeah, it would still get picks and hold on to every bit of underarm odor, and that's on top of no-one knowing about microplastic shedding
but a 1950s Wash'n'Wear shirt, or 1970s double knit pantsuit, or 1980s neon sweatshirt, or a 1990s slinky knit or crushed velour mock turtleneck...so many of them would have been significantly higher quality than the fast fashion of today.
i work in historical costume. i work in a big-ass warehouse, with hundreds of thousands articles of clothing dating back over 100 years (for original pieces).
the BLINDING difference in clothing quality between even the 1990s and the mid-2000s...not even going in to the decline in quality of clothing made in natural fibers (jeans with elastane, i'm looking at you), I've got faux-leather trousers from 1980s that are in near-mint condition, even after being hired and worn repeatedly for the past 40 years. we get donations of clothing that shows and films have bought online for contemporary shows that are disintegrating after being used on one show, for like....10 days, max.
don't even get me started on the seam allowances we used to get in clothes, because the assumption was you'd alter it at some point...

My grandfather owned a garment factory in NYC back in the 1960s (at one point, he had a chance to buy the building for comparative pennies, and turned it down. Individual loft apartments inside of it are now going for seven or eight figures, but that's a missed opportunity for another time). I can still hear my father's canned rant on the declining quality of fabric between his childhood and now. And when they closed the factory (because of overseas competition), my father and mother took home literal crates of the cutoffs and extra bits, and rationed them. I know they're out of it now, but even back in the 1990s, they were talking about the decline in the fabric quality.
it seems like the key theme of fungus is that they eat everything including things otherwise impossible to eat, they get everywhere with their tiny spores, and they grow and be happy wherever it is wet by eating the surroundings. So if get inside your body (wet) they eat you. so your two main options for being a multicellular organism are developing an immune system (most animals) or hiring other fungus to beat the shit out of the fungus that gets inside your body (most plants)

yea plants do have an immune system but they also regularly merge with fungi into superorganisms so it's very different. they have complicated signalling to determine who is friend and who is enemy. meanwhile mammals are over here like "KILL EVERYTHING THAT ISN'T US!!! Fungus? Kill. Bacteria? Kill. Myself? Huh, come to think of it, my intestinal lining is looking at me funny. I never liked him." *develops autoimmune disorder*
being an animal is so cringe. cant merge with fungus into superorganism, can't reproduce vegetatively, can't photosynthesize...what are we even doing
We (animals collectively but mammals in particular) are out here tolerating outrageous climatological conditions to experience the world in time frames and spectra that plants and fungi can only dream of.

being anti ai is making me feel like in going insane. "you asked for thoughts about your characters backstory and i put it into chat gpt for ideas". studies have proven its making people dumber. "i asked ai to generate this meal plan". its causing water shortages where its data centers are built. "ill generate some pictures for the dnd campaign". its spreading misinformation. "meta, generate an image of this guy doing something stupid". its trained off stolen images, writing, video, audio. "i was talking with my snapchat ai-" theres no way to verify what its doing with the information it collects. "youtube is impletmenting ai based age verification". my work has an entire graphics media department and has still put ai generated motivational posters up everywhere. ai playlists. ai facial verification. google ai microsoft ai meta ai snapchat ai. everyone treats it as a novelty. every treats it as a mandatory part of life. am i the only one who sees it? am i paranoid? am i going insane? jesus fucking christ. if i have to hear one more "well at least-" "but it does-" "but you can-" im about to lose it. i shouldnt have to jump through hoops to avoid the evil machine. have you no principles? no goddamn spine? am i the weird one here?
slowly becoming the designated DIY guy of my household not because of any skill or training but because im the only person with the hubris to say 'fuck it hand me a drill how hard can it be." highly reccomend it because it gives a butch thrill that cannot be matched. i understand why suburban dads are like this now. im unstoppable.

im simultaneously amused at the perception of what kids think adults watch, fascinated that they're thinking to take these measures, and saddened that theyre forced to live in a stupid digital panopticon

My medication reminder app decided to translate itself to finnish during the latest update. It also added a streak feature, congratulating you for keeping up a continuous streak of days when you took all your meds, which I admit is pretty cute.
Unfortunately, while the word they used for "streak" is the same one as the one that's in "winning streak", the same word is also used for when you spend multiple days back to back completely drunk. So the cute message of "congratulations! You're on a four day winning streak of taking your meds perfectly every single day!" is both possible and far more likely to interpret as "congrats! You've been continuously drunk nonstop for four days now!"

Nah, finnish is notoriously hard to translate, and I personally literally cannot think of any simple way I would have translated that, either. There's genuinely no other way to briefly say "successfully continuing the ongoing chain of days of fulfilling this task" that I could think of, than the one that's also used for Suicide By Organ Failure -level alcoholism activities.

Do you think it's a good idea to try and get away from Google Docs when it comes to writing? I really can't afford any other fancy program to write my drafts in, and it honestly seems like the easiest - not to mention, most convenient - program to use to share my manuscript with beta readers. I could use advice on this matter because I keep seeing things across the net about it being a bad place to work on writing, but I have no idea what to turn to to make things easy for me and my future beta readers.

So, a little backstory. Ever since Google removed their motto "do no evil" they have gone down the rather predictable path of all big players of the rot economy: putting profits over user experience.
A little while back, there was rumor that Google trains AI with the content of google docs, then they said they don't really, they only scan the content and do nothing with it, and then they started blocking access to documents with sexy images. Do we believe that Google has our own best interest at heart? That's something everyone has to decide for themselves.

Now, is it a good idea to switch from google docs? I think it is, but I'm also not consistent with it. As you mentioned, it seems to be the easiest to share writing with beta readers, and I also still often use it for fanfiction.
But there are alternatives, and they require very little adjustment in the process. Let me give you two free options.

Personally, I'm currently switching everything to LibreOffice (also free!) files in some cloud connected folder. I used to do a lot of mobile writing on my phone with a bluetooth keyboard but currently, I'm taking my laptop everywhere so LibreOffice works great for me. If I have to use my phone or tablet for some lightweight mobile writing, on vacation for instance, I can still use something webbased.
So, I hope I gave you some interesting options. Do I think it's a good idea to make us less dependent on Google? Yes, I do. I don't trust them.
We have alternatives, and they cost us nothing more than a little adjustment.

I'd also recommend Proton Docs, which is made by ProtonMail (a secure email client), who are in the process of developing an entire suite of Google alternatives that are privacy focused and just as user friendly.
Proton Docs is a part of their current Proton Drive, and while Proton Drive (and Doc-viewing/editing within it) in the mobile app isn't perfect yet, their mobile website is great and honestly it feels just like Google Docs to me. To address OP's concerns, it allows you as share links and control the access so others can view or comment or edit and such just like google docs!
And while Proton does have various paid accounts you can choose from, you can still get full access to Proton Drive (and Docs) with a free account! The only limitations I am aware of on the free account are a max storage space of 5GB on the Drive, and no version history available in Docs. Everything else is accessible to free accounts though!
