SNOOPY JAPAN ARABESQUE CUP AND SAUCER SET
this has been plaguing my mind for days
From the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills Handbook [pdf]
Ray Bradburyâs short story âThere Will Come Soft Rainsâ that was written in 1950 is set on the day of August 4th, 2026 (tomorrow)!! Nowâs your chance to read it around the time itâs based in!
Audio: A recording of Leonard Nimoy reading it on Internet Archive.
Text: A PDF version.
Graphic Novel: On Internet Archive.
I used to set this one for second year undergraduate creative writing seminars on writing science fiction on a double bill with Octavia E. Butler's "Bloodchild" and no-one here gets out alive.
!!!! Today is the only chance weâll ever have to listen to this absolute banger of apocalyptic fiction on the very day the story is set đ˛â¨
Nemoyâs voice is PERFECT in this!
(A content warning if you do listen - the dog dies, though itâs not super graphic)
I paused the robot vacuum so I could listen to this 1950âs story predicting the robot vacuum.
how do you deal when someone leaves a comment where they've, like, 1000% misread and not understood a major plot point?
because, i have no clue how to reply. i feel like a big asshole being like "um so actually, its (other thing) and not that, btw." or do i just ignore it because it's literally not that important, and you don't reply? is there a secret third option?
Oh hm thatâs really tough! I think there are a few options:
1) donât reply! You have but this one life on earth, ignore it and move on
2) complain about it in private in your most trusted group chat but leave no public comment
3) assume good faith and be polite and cheerful in your response, giving your response in a compliment sandwich to emphasize the civility of your overtures. Iâm presuming this is a comment on your own work so something like, âthank you so much for reading, Iâm so touched you like it enough to comment! I just wanted to quickly clear up the fact thatLady Catherine de Bourgh is not actually a vampire on this. I was using a metaphor about how Lizzy finds she sucks the life out of a party. Iâm so glad that you liked my descriptions of different Regency candies! I love this particular website for all my food research etcâ
4) delete the comment. Itâs your fic or post or whatever. Iâve done this myself, esp with some wild arguments people tried to have over my soulmark AU stuff. Turns out people get upset over ambiguity despite the fact that youâve written 500k words on how ambiguity is part of the human condition and here is a bunch of different ways people try to make sense of it
4) if itâs not your work and itâs someone saying, âI didnât like The Odyssey film because Helen of Troy was played by a Black actress and Black people hadnât been invented yet in the Bronze Age Mediterraneanâ and it will really bother you not to respond you can treat it as a great time to discuss your special interest in maritime trade routes. How cool it is that you get to share this piece of knowledge you care about! This person you know nothing about it simply didnât know this cool factâfocus on how cool the fact is and not how dumb or stupid you may or may not think this person is for their lack of knowledge or their reliance on some implicit biases that make them strangers to logic
I think before you do any of these ask yourself, âdoes this Internet stranger seem like they would be open to discussion about this, or are they just looking for a fight?â and then react accordingly
this is very handsome advice for many types of internet interactions I think. thank you margz
god damn this is a QUILT ('late day shadows' by nancy messier)
turns out "everything you have ever wanted is on the other side of this fear" is a great trans mantra but also a good mantra if you have OCD
Also a cool thing to say out loud before picking up a sword!!!!!
As someone who is both trans and has a child, absolutely hilarious to me that society presents one of these as absolutely only to be done if you are 110% certain and have proved to several people that you want it bad enough and are ready, and the other is like. You might as well everyone else does. Just do it nobody feels ready. You donât want to? Yes you do
Especially since one of those is pretty reversible if you change your mind after a couple years and the other one, well, technically but thatâs pretty frowned upon
from this article, which is well worth the read, if only for the fun of seeing zuck get dunked on
Drug arrives years after pandemicâs peak, but could still offer protection to vulnerable populations.
An antiviral pill has, for the first time, been shown to prevent COVID-19 in people exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus at home, according to trial results published today in the New England Journal of Medicine1. The drug could be a lifeline for those who still face real danger from the virus, such as care-home residents or transplant recipients on immune-suppressing medication.
There are good things happening in the world.
