An invitation was not what he had expected, though he did consider it. Their funds were already very LOW, and there were only two places they could transfer to. Neither of which were up to their standards. With a slight nod from his sister, he accepted the offer graciously, and the siblings left to get their things. They ended up staying in the same rooms they were in, and while Lucille unpacked only a few items, Thomas hung most of his clothes in the cabinet, and even changed one of the desks into his mini workstation.
Now that they were settled in, he looked for Hokulani, finding her and her cat nearby. Thomas smiled, taking out something small from his pocket.
❝ She might like this. ❞
The sound of something winding up was heard, and as he crouched down, he placed a mechanical mouse on the floor. The gears within made the metal toy move in circles: an IDEAL plaything for a cat like Kalapana. It shot off before the cat could pounce, bouncing off the walls and into the next room.
❝ — thank you. For letting me and my sister stay here. ❞
The morning was spent sending the servants to return the trinkets and bobbles back to their rightful owners. Kalapana yowled and grumbled and sulked, as she often did when her fun was spoiled. Indeed, Hoku was scolding the feline when Thomas approached after he got settled in. She arched a brow, then watched in surprise at the small wooden mouse he produced. She gasped, reaching out to grip his arm boldly as the small thing took off with surprising speed. The cat seemed to have forgotten her bad mood as she sprang after it and disappeared.
“My goodness! That certainly wasn’t real. Where did you get it?”
