We’ve been doing a lot of compass work in class lately (constructions are a pretty critical part of Geometry) and it’s gotten me to think. See, compasses help us to draw perfect circles. It’s something we typically cannot do without some sort of a tool. Perfection is impossible, and yet we constantly strive for it. I wonder if...instead of being afraid to use tools to help us...if we embraces using resources and tools and taught our students to use resources and tools, if we could be more comfortable with imperfection. Even with a compass, we need practice and diligence to draw an almost perfect circle. You have to get used to your compass, with how it works. But we often don’t invest that time into teaching our students how to use tools in the classroom. What if we did? What if we acknowledges that our students will use unlimited resources in their lives and we allowed them to do that in the classroom? Today’s a tough one for me. It’s my 6th day of work, and I’ve had a lot of extra work this week. I’m exhausted and worn out, but today is an important day for my school. What’s funny is something as simple as smiling makes it all a lot easier to bear. A smile helps to give you strength and power. It helps to give strength to those around you. So today? Today, I’m sharing one of my classroom resources. I created this project to help my juniors realize the cost of college, and help them start thinking about scholarships and financial aid. I worked with our college counselor to look at what schools would cost WITHOUT scholarships and relying on private loans to make up the difference between your federal aid and the cost, and we created reflection questions for students to answer. The best part? This project is ridiculously student centered. They choose the college, the loans, etc. This project requires students to work with their parents and gets them thinking about college in real terms. Today was the last day of #MathLab, and I’m going to miss it! We had such a blast working on transformations together and trying to get in lots of practice. Students worked well together, and I’ve learned that I really like having my students sit in small groups around a circle. And then you wonder how many other examples of direct variation your students can come up with. And then you create a project for your students to be creative. And then you’re doing a math activity in class that make math fun. I usually have a few students in my room after school, but since my room isn’t designated as a maths resource center, I don’t always get a ton of students. Today? I had quite a few students and got NOTHING done. And I’m not even mad about it. We listened to music, performed some geometric transformations, solves some function composition problems, and built each other up. This is my reason! This is why I do this every day. With Halloween 🎃 just a week away, followed QUICKLY by Thanksgiving 🦃 and then Christmas 🎄...it’s easy to get caught up in all the activity and forget the reason for the season. Instead of getting overwhelmed, just STOP. Take a deep breath in. Nice and slowly. Like you might do on a deserted beach in the early hours of the morning. Breathe it all out...the frustration, the stress, the busyness. Take another deep breath...this one even slower...and feel it filling your lungs. As you breathe out, let go of any lingering stress, overwhelm, frustration. Take a third deep breath. Relationships are a HUGE part of education, but we don’t talk about it enough. I love hanging out with my students and helping them get their homework done after school. I love when they come talk to me about how things are going in their other classes. I love when they graduate and come back to visit. But teacher student relationships aren’t the only ones that matter. What about our relationships with other teachers? With admin? It’s just as important that these be good solid relationships as well. Today, one of my coworkers and I talked about how we can work on building relationships with other coworkers. Teachers sometimes need reminders to leave school at the end of the day. We get caught up in work and being with our students after school and we forget to go home. I like having an alarm clock that’s specifically for getting me home. It helps when I have student in my room after school, too, because when the alarm goes off, we all know it’s time to pack up.
