Evaluation of the Year
I came on to this course with very little experience in the sort of work we have been doing. I worked almost completely on computers, doing websites, film, animation etc. It has been a very steep learning curve for me and I really have learnt so much over the last year, not just about the practical and technical skills* of design, but also about the whole process from start to finish. On my previous course and through previous design work I had never been taught, and therefor never practised the whole process including the conceptualising and visual research before. It seems surprising to say that now as I have realised that it is such a crucial stage in the process. As for the technical skills, I had never used hardly any of the equipment that we have used, such as screen printing, mono printing, letter press, book binding, so I was completely new to all of that. I have really enjoyed getting to do more hand made work and while I would still go to the computer for a lot of things, I think I feel that I have so many more options to explore with my work to make it look and feel the way I would want. I know that if I didn’t do this course I probably would never have tried these things and I would be lacking a lot of knowledge about what is out there and really limiting myself with the work I could produce.
I have enjoyed working alongside everyone in the class. Everyone has such different styles and tastes, and brings something unique to their design, it’s very diverse. I think the projects I have enjoyed most over the year are the group projects, because although it can sometimes be a bit painful when no one is agreeing with eachother or making any decisions, I still love to work with other people and bounce ideas of eachother and ensure that everyone can work to their own strengths and weaknesses. I personally think working in a group adds something that you can’t get from working alone, I would say I definitely work better in a group and look forward to the group projects to come.
While this has been a very steep learning curve and I have learnt a lot, I still have a way to go. I know I need to stop limiting myself with what I can do and try and think outside the box more and try and solve the problem rather than getting stuck. This may come with experience and knowledge, and I hope it’s something I learn to do better.
If I were to go back and do the year again I guess I would push a little harder, do a little more and probably experiment a bit more. I guess I have felt that because I don’t know as much as many people on the course about certain aspects I didn’t want to show myself up, but I know that there is only one way to learn and I shouldn’t be worried about just having a try and I look forward to doing so in the second year.
Photos from last week when we cleaned and sorted the letter press ready for cataloging. It would have been great to be able to take photos and start designing how the catalog would look, but there was absolutely no point starting that until we actually knew what there was and it looked good enough, other wise we would have had to go back and start again. I'm pleased and surprised at how much we got done though

Evaluation
I am pleased with my work from this unit. I chose to do my spreads on VInce Frost because I liked his approach to his work - he came across very practical, designing things with a specific purpose in mind. I also really appreciated his can-do attitude and positivity, he is very bold and confident. I would love to have his confidence in everything. I enjoyed researching Vince Frost, he is very interesting and I like his personality.
I had quite a lot of problems during this unit which effected my work and I was not happy with the work I did early on and I didn’t really know what I was doing and limited myself a lot with what I was doing so it really didn’t turn out very well. I thin went back and looked at what I had previously done and mocked up a totally different direction I could go in to get myself working better. From there I then started again one more with a much better idea of what I was doing. I then had to work quickly to get the new design done and I managed it. I am please with what I achieved in the extra week I got given.
Obviously if I did this project again I would do it very differently. There were a few things I couldn’t help, but I would have taken everything I did and multiply it over the weeks before. Although I went down the wrong route and got a bit stuck, I think I got there in the end, and if I had realised before and gone in the right direction I could have made something even better over more time.
In regards to the group project, I thought that went very well. I really enjoy working in a group, I definitely prefer working with other people, I love being able to bounce ideas off other people to get another perspective I wouldn’t usually get.
I think the photography group worked well together as a a whole, we had the same aims and gelled well, with enough different opinions to be able to question each other at every turn to make sure we stayed on track. Everyone was very supportive of each other and it was a great environment.
I’m pleased with the work I did over this group project, and I like my final spread. I think I took the most important parts of my partner’s personality and showed them in my spread. The place where she feels most comfortable is at the beach and she totally changed her body language from being introverted and shy to being passionate, louder and just clearly longing to be there. I asked her if she has a particular favourite place and Bournemouth beach was one of them, so I included the pier in the photo. She is also quite traditional and very family orientated so I went to an antiques shop where they had lots of framed photos of family portraits and got a frame that I think sums up being both traditional, while also neat, structured and gentle. I then used it to frame the sand which is the colour she described herself as and in the environment she is most comfortable in, while also I think saying something about her personality - calm, relaxed, bright, and not everything is at the surface... maybe you have to go looking underneath to find what else there is.
After speaking to the tutors I thought it would be a really nice idea to take photos of a frame down on bournemouth beach. When we were questioning each other she said she is quite traditional and really loves her family, so I went on a search for a nice family photo frame that I thought would sum her up well. I found this one which was quite clean cut but traditional at the same time. I took the frame down to bournemouth beach and starting photographing it. I also tried to keep the frame on the sand, so it would be framing the answer to her question.
I'm still deciding which image to use, and asking everyone for opinions.
Images being used for my Vince Frost interview. Looking at how he has lived in so many places, being the outsider, finding his way and coming together. The arrows to show his diversity of work, with his 360 degree approach to his work. The colour to show his boldness and confidence he portrays in his interview.
I took the photos into Photoshop and had a play around to try and enhance them and bring out some better colours, this is the result
I asked Karly if she had any particular beaches that were her favourites and she told me that she likes Brighton, Bournemouth and Cyprus beaches. I really wanted to get a photo of one of these places, but the weather was really rubbish and it would give the wrong impression, but then there was a window of nice weather one evening and I decided to go down to Bournemouth beach with my camera and take some photos. These are the unedited versions
This is the image I like the best. I have taken the image in to photoshop and altered it to enhance the yellows and adjust the lighting.
These are some previous beach photos I have taken that I think sum up Karly's personality in them. They are all calm and relaxing and I think when looking at most of them the overriding colours are the pastel colours, mainly the yellow

for this group project I am in the photography group. We have decided that we would like to do our book in pairs, each interviewing eachother and then doing a design for them based on what we get from their answers. My pair is Karly.
We have chosen to just look at one question and do a page design based on that single question. The question I have chosen to use for her page is “if you were a colour what would it be and why?”
Her answer: She would probably be a pastel colour as she is quite shy - which is why I have the text small in the farthest corner from where you would normally look for text - she would probably be a pastel yellow as she is quite optimistic. We then spoke more in depth about likes, dislikes, favourites etc and when the beach was mentioned I noticed a complete shift in Karly's behaviour, she opened up and got quite passionate about it - clearly something that means a lot to her so I took the pastel yellow from the beach.
I particularly liked this question because she is shy, and her colour choice suggests that also, however, when we asked each other more questions, I asked her what her favourite environment would be and why and she completely changed. Karly completely opened up, her body language changed, she was dynamic, her eyes lit up and she was very passionate when she described how much she would love to be at the beach and what she feels when she is there. This was obviously such a hugely important thing to her it really did have to be on the page!
Looking into triangles bursting and creating shapes. I love the mixture of colours in here, I think this works really well
