what did archive of our own do?
any more questions?
You… do realise that people tag works as containing rape/paedophilia/incest when the stories are explicitly about those things being bad, and not just because they’re writing dark themes for reasons that you personally disapprove of, right? That tags merely state the presence of a thing without explaining how it’s dealt with in the narrative, and that stories do not have to be morally instructional and perfect and pure in order to be allowed to exist?
Like. You might as well walk into a bookshop and stamp BLOCKED FOR BADWRONG CONTENT on every book in the Song of Ice and Fire series, half of Shakespeare, every YA novel about rape recovery, every adult novel about rape recovery, every biography of someone who has suffered from rape, incest or paedophilia and been brave enough to write about it, every book of Greek, Egyptian and Norse myths, the fucking Bible - just a truly massive percentage of the entire global literary canon, because there is literally no way to remove each and every reference to these themes otherwise.
Do you know why schools and libraries are pressured to ban books like I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, To Kill a Mockingbird and Laurie Halse Andersen’s Speak? Because dumbass, scaremongering adults think that letting teens read about rape or racism or sexual violence or queerness or half a dozen other topics they think are Bad Things will lead to them down a path of Vice.
What happens to characters in stories, no matter how graphic or awful, is not the same as that act occurring to a real human person in real life, nor does reading or writing such works indicate endorsement of those acts. This is why a story which features paedophilia, regardless of whether it’s written as overtly sexual content or as a damning condemnation of the act, is not the same as child pornography by any legal definition: because no actual children are harmed. Are you personally still allowed to be angry and disgusted about the public availability of the former type of stories, even in instances where the writers are themselves victims of child abuse trying to process their trauma? Yes! You’re under no moral obligation to like any kind of content! But are you correct in asserting that the creation of such stories is illegal and hurting somebody in exactly the same way that a real abuser hurting a real child would be? No! Because fictional characters are not real people, and whatever our motives for creating or engaging with a particular thing, monkey see = monkey approve is not how it fucking works.
Have you ever watched an episode of CSI? Congratulations! By your own logic, you’re pro rape and murder. Ever watched an episode of Hannibal? Congratulations! By your own logic, you endorse cannibalism, Stockholm Syndrome and serial killing. Ever watched a historical drama where a young girl gets married to a much older man? Congratulations! By your own logic, you endorse child brides. And on, and on, and on.
I say again: you are allowed to be critical of particular works and/or the recurrence of certain themes across a particular medium. But arguing that an entire literary platform needs to end because some stories there contain Bad Things makes as much sense as banning the works of Octavia Butler or Sherman Alexie from school libraries because of their content. Which is - spoiler alert - a really bad idea.
UGH.
All of this.
Puritanical culture is really fucking dangerous. By thinking you’re being ‘pure’ and ‘good’ and condemning all these things, you’re actually playing right into the hands of people who want to control media content by pretending shades of gray don’t exist. It’s not as simple as Thing Good or Thing Bad. It’s “Thing Complicated And Needs Critical Thought And Review.”
Do not, in your quest for purity, lose your ability to think.
I think people forget that AO3 is an archive as well, they aren’t particularly responsible for every piece of content produced there. It’s like boycotting twitter because someone there was posting about sensitive topics. That’s not how the internet works and it’s such an uninformed way of seeing things.
I also suggest, for people on the other side of this argument, to study a bit more history and look into censorship. I live in a country that spent a lot of time under dictatorship (I wasn’t alive myself at the time but my parents were) and I know enough about it to make it obvious that it’s a Goddamn Bad Idea You Dumbasses lol
People work through their personal bad experiences through literature, like the other people in this thread said. Sometimes people write things to raise awareness about a subject. Art isn’t pure or cute, it shouldn’t be forcefully cleansed. Making art uniform is supid and wouldn’t work when we’re plural multifaceted beings, These fanfics teach people about these subjects, when well written they can educate. I learned loads about consent reading fanfic. It’s more effective than long tumblr rambles about it, It allows you to put yourself in the shoes of victim or perpetrator. And that’s not a bad thing!
If reading about certain contents bother you just DON’T READ IT?? It’s that simple! You know why the tags exist? So people don’t have to read it if it triggers them or if they would rather not, A lot of you are spoiled and grew up on AO3 but trigger warnings weren’t even a thing when I started writing and I’m incredibly thankful for them now. I’m thankful for tags that keep me safe. And that’s what you’re ultimately fighting against. And pro censorship if you think someone is gonna sit there and review everyone’s fics to say whether or not they’re appropriate.
You’re spoiled and libraries have no such things to protect and shelter you. But AO3 does. It’s a desservice to writers seeing people who have no idea what they’re talking about accusing AO3 this way. It’s a goddamn disgrace. And I wish you would shut up for a damn second and allow art to be made, whether it pleases you or not.

1-2 If you know what they think some of those traits/mannerisms are, I’m actually curious // Quoting Scott/Posey stans’ own words: “Scott has waaaaay more traits that are seen as female than Stiles does. Scott is the one who provides the emotional labor for the characters surrounding him. Scott pretty much is the Mom figure in the pack. His strengths go not towards the physical, but to mental strength, diplomacy and healing. All of which are things that are generally pushed towards female love
2-2 interests. Scott is the one who makes Allison embrace herself as a girl, instead of letting her put herself down for it. In big part by making it clear he does those ‘girly’ things too. And he’s the one who proudly accepts the monniker of the hot girl.” They also claim that Scott McCall is totes bisexual and queer coded and that “he demonstrates direct emotional concern, flirts sexually, and experiences intimacy with men on multiple occasions” throughout the series
(You’re so good to me, numbering these. <3 <3)
I have no clue what you’re quoting, but I take issues with like...all of it.
At what fucking point does anyone in the show go to Scott when they’re upset and get comforted? Isaac goes to scott for advice that one time, but it’s only because Scott’s the only werewolf he knows that isn’t running away or Derek. or peter, I guess. How about when Erica is trying to explain to him why she took the bite and he tells her he doesn’t care? Or when Boyd is trying to explain that he’s lonely so he took the bite and he says that’s a bad reason? How about when Derek tells Scot that his entire family was burned to death by the Argents and Scott says “They must’ve had a reason?” Oh, OH, is it maybe when Stiles tries to tell Scott he’s scared he’ll be the next virgin sacrifice, and Scott laughs at him? Or maybe it’s when Stiles tells Scott that he thinks he had something to do with the bomb, and begs his best friend to believe him, and Scott refuses? Is it when Allison is trying to break up with him and he refuses to listen or accept it and insists they’ll get back together, both guilting her and implying that he’s not going to move on and he’s going to bother her about it in the future? Was it when he found out a man who’d been brutally attacked happened to die in a hospital and he ran to Derek’s house to accuse him of being the one to kill both the driver and Derek’s own fucking sister whom he’d tried to bury on their property? OH. is it when he tells Derek he’s going to leave him strung to be electrocuted and beaten unless he agrees to save Scott’s girlfriend? Is it when he lies to Allison (omission is still lying) about why her mother died and lets Derek take the fall? Is it when he duct-tapes Liam to a fucking bathtub? Tell me, is Scott the one who tries to comfort Lydia when she’s freaking out about losing her mind to Peter’s spell? Is it Scott that she goes to and sits in the bedroom of because she’s hoping to talk to someone? Is it Scott who sits in a van with Jackson and has to explain to him that he’s been murdering people and last night he tried to kill his best friend? Is Scott the one who goes to Derek after Boyd dies? Is Scott the one Allison breaks down with in the elevator? Or the one she cries with after her mother dies? WHO THE FUCK do they think sits next to Scott every time he complains about not getting to be with Allison, about not getting to be normal. About how Derek is So MeAn. Who listens to him ramble about having sex with Allison? Who does he call when he bites Liam? Who does the research to tie him up on full moons because he can’t do anything himself? Who teaches him that love gives him control instead of making him weak? Who takes him out to talk about/get drunk after his breakup? Who TELLS him he’s the hot girl because they’re encouraging him to ask someone out that he likes and get over his ex? Who STEPS INTO FUCKING GASOLINE FOR HIM? I”M GONNA SCREAM. Who actually goes to Derek after Boyd’s death? Who teaches Malia what FEELINGS are? Who actually tries to talk to Lydia? Who actually talks to Jackson? WHO DRESSES Jackson? Who defends Derek from the Argents? Who comforts and supports Lydia while she tries to get a handle on her banshee powers? Who is DEREK’S ANCHOR? If someone wants to tell me that telling Liam, the kid he bit, that he isn’t a monster and hugging his best friend while Stiles sits outside an MRI machine and waits to find out if he’s gonna die like his mom did counts as being Emotional Labor for everyone, they can fucking bite me.
ALSO. Allison has no issues with being a girl? Does anyone see her rejecting skirts or dresses or jewelry or makeup? Does anyone see her saying “I can’t do that I’m a girl?” Nobody remembers her telling her mom that she should get to be strong AND go to prom? Just because she says “I freaked out like a total girl” and you say “I’d probably cry and freak out like a total girly girl” doesn’t mean you helped her accept that “it’s okay” for her to be a girl. It doesn’t make you feminine. It means you emphasized the whole fucking issue by playing along with the narrative that ‘girly girls’ are weak. In fact, it makes you even more of a dick because you equated crying with weakness. Doesn’t matter if you said you’d probably do it too. Fuck you.
Mental strength? Like saying the Risk versus Reward wasn’t worth it to retrieve Erica and Boyd (they didn’t know about Cora yet) from CAPTIVITY? Like not recognizing the scent of a werewolf that just stepped in the fucking elevator with you? Diplomacy like asking sweet little Matt if he’s okay after his bump on the head? Diplomacy like working with serial killers not once, not twice, but over and over?
Healing like sticking your claws in someone’s neck without their permission when everyone is telling you not to? Healing like holding someone’s mouth open and forcing them to bite the father of the woman who raped them?
A straight boy saying “I’m the hot girl” in reference to possibly dating/having sex with other girls, IS NOT a sign of being queer. It’s a sign of someone who watches lesbian porn. (I’m being fucking facetious.)
Please please tell me when Scott flirts sexually with a guy. Tell me. Someone. And it can’t be one of those incredibly awkward scenes where he gets uncomfortable because he thinks someone else is flirting with him. *Spongebob face* “Are we still talking about Danny’s lacrosse equipment?” That’s just “dude, I’m not into guys, stop staring at me.” straight male narcissism.
what scott did to derek in the season 2 finale wasn’t a violation, it was poetic justice and derek’s well deserved comeuppance for being an inhuman, incompetent flop as a an alpha, werewolf and person. derek knew he deserved it, that’s why he accepted it and never held it against scott. not to mention that by inconveniencing derek for a few seconds, scott single-handedly defeated gerard and the kanima and saved derek’s and everyone’s life at the warehouse. plus, he made derek a better person
Look. I know you like Scott. But I need you to understand that what you’re saying is not only factually incorrect, but the implications of it are really hurtful.
Scott suffered a lot because he was bitten without being given a choice. Peter attacked him and turned him into something he never wanted to be. That is horrible for him, and I feel for him. What frustrates me so much is that he had his autonomy taken away from him, he suffered a huge injustice, and instead of protecting other people’s rights to choose, he decided to take away their choice the same way it was done to him. He shamed and insulted Erica and Boyd for their decisions to take the bite, completely negating their abilities to make their own choices. Derek didn’t attack them. He told them the risks, he explained what the bite was and what he expected back from them if he gave it to them. They asked for the bite. That was their choice, not Scott’s.
First off, Derek did not deserve what happened to him. A rape survivor who lost his entire family in a brutal fire that his rapist set and had his big sister murdered by his own uncle, did not deserve to have his body used without his consent to give what he considered a gift to the father of the woman who assaulted him, and it in no way made him a ‘better person.’ No. You need to be more careful about the things you say, because sexual assault survivors shouldn’t have to read horrible things like what you just typed out and sent to me. I should not have to read it.
Second, Scott’s motivation behind what he did was not justice. It was pride, a disregard for Derek’s bodily autonomy, and maybe even an actual urge to help with the Gerard situation. You could even add revenge to the list, since Gerard threatened Scott’s mom. And I have to point out, if Scott is really the amazing person that you’re claiming he is, then ‘poetic justice’ should never be something he is aiming for. Good people don’t do the thing that is the most ‘poetic.’ If Scott were as empathetic and kind as people claim he is or the show tries to tell us he is, he never would have done that to Derek, no matter how much he disliked him. There was no reason why he couldn’t have told Derek what he had planned and gotten Derek’s permission to do what he did. Scott kept the secret from him because he felt like he had the right to make decisions about Derek’s body without Derek’s consent. He did it because he wanted to be the one with the secrets for once. He outright admits that he kept the secret “Because you may be an Alpha, but you’re not mine.” He wanted to prove that Derek couldn’t control him, by hurting Derek and forcing him to give what Derek considered the greatest gift a werewolf could bestow, to the father of the woman who murdered Derek’s family. That is cowardly, childish, and apathetic, and it directly contradicts the idea that Scott is in any way True Alpha material.
Third, nothing he did was single-handed, because Derek isn’t an inanimate object or a tool. He’s a person, and without him, Scott’s plan wouldn’t have happened. Without Deaton, Scott’s plan wouldn’t have happened. Scott did not act alone.
Fourth, Derek didn’t accept what Scott did, and he did hold it against him. He felt so unsafe with Scott that he didn’t even tell him about the Alphas over the summer, didn’t ask for his help to find his Betas, because he didn’t think Scott could be trusted. Scott had already sold him out once and Derek had every right to believe Scott would do it again. (Which he then did at the end of S3A when he went to join Deucalion and left Derek unconscious in an elevator, in a hospital about to be swarmed with cops.)
Fifth, everything you are angry with Derek for, Scott did as well. So if you’re saying that Derek is ‘inhuman’ and a failure of an Alpha/werewolf/person, then you must be saying the same thing about Scott. Yes, Derek threw his Betas around and injured Isaac. Scott also threw Isaac into a wall twice (without even the pretense of training him) and dug his claws into Liam’s (I think it was him) neck without his permission. Yes, Derek chained his Betas up on the full moon. Scott abducted Liam and duct-taped him to his bathtub without explaining anything he’d done to him, and I’m pretty sure (though I don’t remember it well) that he was involved in Liam getting chained to a tree at one point. Yes, Derek kept secrets from his pack under the pretense of ‘protecting’ them. Scott also kept the truth about how Allison’s mom was bitten from her, letting her believe for months that Derek brutally attacked her mother for no reason, and lied to Kira about her losing control of her kitsune (though I also don’t remember a lot of that plotline). He also lied to Stiles about whether Lydia liked him, after making out with Lydia (who currently had a boyfriend) in the coach’s office, which is just a dick move, whether it was the full moon or not. Derek told Erica to seduce either Scott or Stiles? Scott told Allison to go on a date with Matt and KISS HIM. Derek scared Isaac away by shouting at him? Scott shouted at Allison for doing something she’d already told him she was going to do, and for telling her parents something she’d already warned him she was going to tell them, and told her to stay away from him. Derek shoved Scott against a wall? Scott shoved Stiles against a wall on his first moon! Oh, Scott was scared/frustrated/having trouble with control? Well, Derek’s sister had just died and Scott was about to expose the entire supernatural secret to a lacrosse field full of people.
Sixth, Scott didn’t defeat Gerard or the Kanima, and he definitely didn’t save the warehouse full of people. Gerard wasn’t dead after getting the bite from Derek. He had enough energy left to tell the Kanima to kill everyone in the room, and escape while no one was looking. The Kanima wasn’t defeated by Scott, it had Allison by the fucking throat and it only backed off when Stiles hit it with his goddamn Jeep and Lydia came out to face Jackson. Scott had nothing to do with that. Lydia is technically the one who saved everyone in the warehouse, and Stiles was her ride. Scott’s contribution was negligible. It was a time waster. He could have accomplished the exact same thing by just standing there and talking to Gerard until Stiles showed up with Lydia.
Seventh, Scott’s behavior was indeed a violation. And I don’t just mean the bite he forced Derek to give Gerard. He didn’t just get revenge on the guy who’d been rude to him and arguing with him for the last few months. He lied to Derek, over and over (while also avoiding ever technically lying, in much the same way Deaton often does, to avoid being caught out by his heartbeat). He learned Derek’s plans and where Derek was hiding, insinuated that he wanted to be part of Derek’s pack (knowing how important pack was to Derek), and outright yelled at Derek for supposedly keeping something from him (Which he wasn’t. Derek canonically wasn’t holding back any secrets from Scott at the time, unless you count the fact that Peter was alive, which Derek had every right to assume Deaton had already told him) all while he was the one working for Gerard. (That is literally gaslighting. Like, literally.) He exposed Derek and his pack to Gerard, feeding him information on the same kids that he insisted were ‘his responsibility’ that probably helped Gerard get ahold of Erica and Boyd to torture them. It was a violation of Derek’s consent. A violation of Derek’s trust, of Erica and Boyd and Isaac’s trust. And a violation of Stiles’ trust as well, since Stiles had no clue what Scott was doing.
You came to my ask box after seeing the various posts that I’ve made, with documented moments from the show and well reasoned arguments and frustrations with Scott McCall’s character. Are you seriously telling me you didn’t think I’d have a comeback?
“He had been twelve years old, as his old life ended, as he lost his family and with them his pack… as he was suddenly and completely alone in a world full of war. Now he was sixteen… and not alone anymore. But the boy, Stiles, was a different story. A story Derek sometimes.. still wished to forget again right away.” __________________________________________________________
You can find the whole lil ‘story’ on A03.
me, opening a fake dating fic, having read hundreds before and knowing exactly how it will play out: i hope they fall in love
Me, when they fall in love:
Stiles is magically turned into a fennec fox, and seriously, if one more person goes for his ears, he will pee on everyone. Especially Derek if he doesn’t stop laughing.
And then wolf cuddles, obviously.
