Something about that smile had Bryson leaning in without thinking. He could see some features in him that matched Arielle’s stunning beauty and natural charm. They were siblings, after all. But he also knew there was a ton he didn’t know about the budding CEO. “We should?” He regarded the other man with a little apprehension. After an awkward pause he raised the bottle to his lips again, swallowing the mild horror at his awful retort. Maybe if Sterling wasn’t literally his best friend’s brother he could have agreed with a clear conscience. But that ridiculously handsome face and inviting grin couldn’t change a fact. He wasn’t wired like that. Well, in some ways. He used to love fiercely and fully, found someone he thought was his soulmate. Now he was what most people would describe as sad. Mid-thirties, failed marriage and minimal custody of his son, in a career path that he loved but got little pay (and even lesser recognition) for.
“I-I don’t think that’s the fun she’d expect from me,” he stammered. Brother or not, he had eyes and having anyone in Sterling’s league even consider him that way was madness in his eyes. “Or you… maybe.” He blew out a breath and got to his feet. Okay, probably a bit of a mistake as it became apparent he was less balanced than he thought. Domesticity had made him a lightweight, he thought to himself as he placed a palm on the counter to steady himself. He needed to stop staring at Sterling but the man was close enough that he seemed to occupy Bryson’s entire field of vision.
Bryson, ever the fan of the five paragraph essays he assigned to his students, couldn’t for the life of him come up with a convincing way to refuse the man. He didn’t want to, in all honesty, but he had to be responsible. He wasn’t one to jaunt off at weddings with the most attractive guy in the room. He was perfectly content to watch and cringe with secondhand embarrassment from the sidelines. The ship for that had long left, though. “I won’t waste your time, Sterling… and I need to piss,” he broke off suddenly. Bryson felt his upper half sway and instinctively placed a hand on the man’s shoulder to steady himself. A second later and he realized his mistake, pulled his hand off, and made the short trek to the hallway.
There seemed to be something holding the other back, and that was irritating Sterling. He didn’t like hesitation, but he supposed it only made the game more fun. To the young CEO, life was a game that he was going to play, and he was going to play it the way he wanted to. After all it was the only true way to play the game. He knew as the other debated his offer, eventually turning it down that it was going to be a bit harder than he anticipated. Usually his pretty face and smooth attitude did the trick, but Bryson seemed immune to his spell this time around. Maybe it was his relationship to his sister that held him back, or something in his past, but he was determined to see past it and get him on his list for the night.
“Oh, c’mon, Bryson. You give yourself too little credit. I’m definitely expecting big things from you,” he retorted with a wink and a quick glance with his eyes to his pants. He grinned, and took a smooth sip of his drink. What could it be? Was it his low self conscious preventing him from having fun? Maybe that’s what he needed. “I think you’re quite the looker, and there has definitely been a few eyes on you all night,” he complimented. Maybe that’s what he needed to finally get him to snap. He held onto the other as he stood to steady him.
“Whoa, Bryson, you seem a little iffy on your feet,” the Jacobs boy teased as he followed the other to the bathroom. He could of gone for another anyone else but he wanted Bryson. He wanted the nerdy best man and he wasn’t going to take no for an answer. Not unless he physically pushed him away. He had some decency in him. He leaned against the bathroom wall. “I’m here just to make sure that you’re okay and don’t collapse in the bathroom with how you were moving, I was getting a little bit worried.” He imitated a drunk person walk, leaning from side to side as he took a step after step. “You looked a bit like that and I’d feel very responsible if something happened to that pretty face of yours.”
