john shook his head shrugging his shoulders as he listened to his brother, “i honestly don’t have a say so it doesn’t even matter to me.. i’ll be working in the back anyways.” that was a lie but now he made it his mission to see if he could just focus on inventory for the night so he wouldn’t have to deal with seeing his older brother for the night, though part of him knew it wasn’t going to happen and he was going to have to deal with it. he gave a nod, “i’ll be around during then, so if you want to stop by with her or meet up around then we can… for her.” he nodded again swallowing after the words left his mouth. he missed the younger girl, hell he missed being around his brother but his mind always went into a dark place whenever he was around the older male he didn’t know why but ever since the death of their father he couldn’t bring himself to be around the other. nodding he looked at sterling, “yeah, yeah i do. i can’t complain about it much anymore.”

his lips tugged up in a small smile at john agreeing to see neysa. he could already hear the girl’s excitement when he told her later tomorrow morning. “im sure she will set something up when i tell her. is your number the same, she refuses to talk to anyone in person anymore. teens.” sterling chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck nervously at the thought of him having a teenager in the house soon. he had married holly young, high school sweethearts who were ready to take on the world together. soon neysa came along and sterling realized how much being a father would mean to him. it was why he invited his brother to spend time with them even if it was going to be awkward and bring up old memories he didn’t want to face anytime soon. “good good, you deserve to be happy.”

the male nodded his head looking from his older brother any other object that surrounded him rather focus on anything than the male across from him, “oh.. here, uh huh.” he shook his head a bit to shocked that this was how they’d see each other again, him working a shift and having to see the male practically all night, “well that um good that they asked you.. right her birthday is coming up i almost forgot.” he admitted. of course he knew about the girl’s birthday he couldn’t forget his only niece’s birthday, even if he wanted to forget about part of his life. scratching the back of his neck he shrugged a bit, “about a year or so i think.. i can’t really remember.” 

sterling saw how he looked everywhere but at him and sighed not trying to hide it. “i would ask if you cared if i played here tonight but honestly i do not give a damn if you like it or not.” the tension between brothers was obvious for both of them and the older tudor stopped trying to bat around the topic a while ago. though he did pause and sighed softly this time to himself as he knew he would regret what was going to come out of his mouth. “though i am sure neysa would love it if she saw you for her birthday...it has been a few years.” so much had happen during then. his wife, holly, had passed away, they moved to london, neysa was about to turn into a teenager... “so i take it that you like it here then?”

most days john would dread to be working, he’d picked up hours because they were short staffed and now seemed to be their busy time, but today felt different he felt like everything was good and everything would stay good. he felt like that most days recently and he only had one person, maybe two people to thank for that. after helping one of the girls move something in the back they walked back out to finish up their day, laughing about something though john’s laugh was cut short. his good day seemed to hit its toll when he spotted the familiar male on the other side of the counter, his brother. his smile fell and he had to force himself to not ball his hand into a fist, “it’s john now.. and yes i work here. what can i do for you?” he asked trying to sound as normal as he could without raising suspicion to his coworker.

his eyebrows furrowed some in confusion but he nodded his head at the correction of the name. he would bring that up with him on another time but for now with the other worker near by he dropped it and answered the question. “i got asked to play here tonight...neysa’s birthday is next month and i could use a bit of cash.” growing up him and ‘john’ both had access to whatever funds they needed, even now with their father gone they still had that. however sterling tried not to use that money when it came to things like this with his daughter. gifts he tried to earn the money to make them more meaningful. “have you been working here long?”

Lena grinned at him, pleased he knew what she was talking about. It made her feel better to know that she wasn’t the only person in the world who knew about skee ball. “Mmmm, father of the year right there.” She laughed, a smirk playing on the edge of her lips. She couldn’t help but let her heart beat a little faster at his smile–though Lena wouldn’t say anything about that. She was his daughter’s teacher after all–talk about overstepping her bounds. “Nyesa I’m sure is thrilled to have had some father daughter time. And thank goodness they still exist–I don’t know what I would do if they didn’t! How else would i sharpen my game?” She let out a laugh and shook her head at his comment. Attractive, very attractive. “Well, you’re definitely not ancient Mr. Tudor. That’s clear.” She let out a slightly nervous giggle.

The smallest of blushes rose to his cheeks at her words and he shook his head. “No I am far from it.” He was no father of the year, he was just trying to raise his daughter properly as a single father. “I try to make sure I can spend as much time as I can with her when she is not in school. Perhaps there is some video game version of it out there just in case? I have no idea, I am just spit balling ideas. Honestly I have no idea how video games work anymore. I think my age is showing...” Sterling chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck. “Well thank you and please, call me Sterling.”

Sometimes he had to take whatever work he could get. This was one of those gigs. Neysa’s birthday was coming up next month and he wanted to get the pre teen the pair of shoes she had been begging him since what it felt like January. It wasn’t a concert at Carnegie Hall or the Royal Opera House but it was income, or at least that was what he kept telling himself as he pushed open the cafe doors. Walking up to the counter, he cleared his throat to ask where he could set up - even though the piano in the corner was the obvious spot - when he paused, turned his head to the side in confusion some when he spotted a familiar mop of brown hair. One he hadn’t seen in almost three years but still. “Alexander...I didn’t know you worked here now.”

“SO i’ve been watching love island to acquaint myself with the british culture,” valeria informed, sipping her latte. “honestly, it just reminds me of a slightly classier jersey shore, to be perfectly honest. and i don’t think i’ve actually learned anything about britain.” she gave a short shrug. “it is entertaining, though.”

“A slightly classier jersey shore...” Sterling mused out loud to himself. There was even a shake of his head. “My daughter loves that show, now I may have to be worried about her watching it...” Sure the girl was twelve but still, should he be worried? “What all happens on it?”

Well, there’s something she wasn’t expecting to hear it. She sighed deeply, handing it up her bottle of scotch to him. ❛ I hope you don’t mind, I sipped first. ❜ Since she was drinking straight from the bottle, she wasn’t using any glasses.

Taking the bottle, he brought it up to his lips only to be hit with the familiar peaty scent of a good scotch. This caused him to smile some before taking a swig and passing it back to her with a nod of his head. “Of course not. I never mind going after a beautiful lady. Is there a reason why we are drinking tonight?”

“Does literally no one under the age of, like, 20, remember what skee ball is? I mentioned today in class and–I shit you not–at least 10 of them stared at me like i spoke in tongues. The rest of them were probably just nodding along to earn some brownie points. And then–when some high schoolers came in to talk about their experience and give my students some advice–they also looked at me like I was crazy for talking about the game. I mean, it’s not that uncommon of an arcade game right? Wait–arcades still exist don’t they?” Lena asked, running her hand through her hair. “Please make it so I don’t feel so old–because right now I feel ancient.”

“Neysa gave me this same heart attack last week.” Sterling said letting out a chuckle. “I dropped her off at a birthday party last week for a friend and after it she asked me what the game was. We ended up staying a few extra hours so I could show her how it was done...though I am not the best at the game, however we did manage to win a small pink bear with our tickets.” The memory brought a smile to his face, though talking about his pre-teen daughter usually did that. Even when the teenage hormones threatened to come out to play. “Yes, to answer your question arcade games still exist. The seem to collect more dust than normal on them but they exist.” He offered the teacher a smile. “If you are ancient then what am I, Miss. Valentine?”

“Hey, let me remind you that I win multiple rounds over you before,” Elle replied. “And I have no intention of letting that winning streak go.” Her smirk only grew as he looked over at her–a part of her stomach fluttering as he did so. Even though she was a long ways from her California years, she still couldn’t deny that Sterling had a certain…aura around him, that still made her stomach flip. Which was an issue, since she knew John wouldn’t be happy if he found out…but she couldn’t exactly control it. “It’s detective, actually.” She replied, grinning as she turned herself toward the jukebox. “Oh, how cliche, Tudor. And so sure of yourself. What makes you so confident that you’ll beat me?”

“Who says I wasn’t letting you win those games?” Sterling said walking over to grab the pool cue. “Besides it was cute when I let you win while I was teaching you how to play.” The older man couldn’t help but wink at her as he let that little secret out. How he let her win in their younger years simply to see her smile. “Ah right, detective. How is work going by the way?” His eyes followed her as she walked over to the jukebox. Old habits died hard. “Easy, angel. I know your weaknesses.”

“Ok, ok–so what song do you want to hear as I destroy you in this friendly game of pool?” Elle smirked, as she rested on the jukebox. It was her first night out after her…accident and she was determined the make the most of it–which basically meant she was ready to whoop everyone in this bar’s ass at pool. It was something she had grown up playing but hadn’t had the time to get back to it in a while. But now with her being on desk duty and all her cases taken away, well she had plenty of time. “If you pick a good one, I might even let you win a round.” She winked.

“You might let me win a round?” Sterling said with a fake gasp as he nudged her with his shoulder. He normally towered over her but with her shoes they were almost the same height. Long gone was the awkward yet pretty teenager and now stood a woman he found just as intoxicating. “I feel honored Miss. Royce.” Sterling kept his tone playful which was easy for him around her. “For the record I want to hear ‘Are you gonna be my girl’ as I destroy you.”

“Honestly, I was just going to just ask if you minded sharing. That’s all.” Sterling said with a shrug of his shoulders. Though even if she said no, he could always go and grab a bottle of his own from the bar and join her that way.
