When you’re born into money everyone thinks you have everything you could ever want or need. Sterling and Liza Levin seemingly had it all. They had one of the biggest houses on Aurora Bay Drive, a vacation home, the best clothes, cars, you name it! The Levin sisters were practically famous in their hometown of Aurora Bay due their great grandfather being the founder of the town as well their father owning the five star restaurant, Neptune. They could buy anything they wanted and the world was practically at their fingertips. The two were often mistaken as spoiled but it wasn’t the truth.
Sterling and Liza lost their mother when they were young. Sterling was only six years old and would now have to grow up learning how to navigate life without the help of her mother. It was hard for her to understand that she would never see or speak to her mom again and it left the little girl with feelings too big for her to handle. It made Sterling an angry kid and even at a young age she was getting into trouble with her temper and attitude. James was left with two young girls to raise on his own while grieving his wife, and he wasn’t sure what to do with Sterling.
James tried to help Sterling by taking her love for the ocean and trying to help her learn discipline through it. She took up swimming and eventually became a certified lifeguard, as well as taking up surfing. Putting all of her energy into these things helped her to a degree, though she still struggled to handle her emotions even well into high school. However, that didn’t stop Sterling from being one of the most popular girls in school. She was friends with everyone, her small group of best friends were wild, and she and her boyfriend were convinced they were meant to be. High school was when things looked up for Sterling mentally and emotionally. However, there were times her temper and attitude still got her in trouble, but she was trying her best to keep it together. Most of her negative energy went towards her older sister, Liza.
Liza always wanted to be a mother while Sterling couldn’t fathom having a child herself, and while Sterling wanted to be able to be around her big sister, she often felt like Liza was trying to replace their mom. Liza took over that role, becoming protective of Sterling, being the more mature one of the two, and generally just trying to take care of everyone and everything. It frustrated Sterling and it often resulted in her lashing out on Liza. Sterling kept a distance between herself and her sister, despite living under the same roof.
Despite what home looked like, life was good for Sterling. She had money, friends, and a boyfriend she was ready to marry. The night of their high school graduation, they all celebrated with a huge party, and that was the rest of summer; partying. Sterling and her friends had plans and big aspirations of going off to college and starting their careers, and Sterling and her boyfriend had plans of going to college together and eloping. However, all of those plans would come crashing down that July, when Sterling found herself sitting in her bathroom while she stared at those two pink lines on a pregnancy test. Completely panicked, Sterling ran to her sister for help. Liza was mature and level-headed, she’d know exactly what to do. Despite knowing she had options, though, Sterling decided she wanted to keep the baby.
Sterling had never planned on becoming a mother. She never wanted the responsibility of raising a child and the mere idea of pregnancy was a bit terrifying to her. However, Sterling hoped that she could do it, especially with the help of her boyfriend. Sterling was terrified to tell her boyfriend she was going to have his baby, but she had hoped that things would work out and be good. He promised her he would stay, that he was okay with keeping the baby, and that they’d work it all out. Together. But August came and he left, breaking up with her and leaving her pregnant and alone with his baby.
Sterling didn’t know how she was going to do any of this alone, but the thought of losing the baby was somehow scarier than keeping it. She cried to her sister and she went to her father, terrified of how he would react to knowing she was pregnant. To her surprise, James told her that whatever she chose to do, he and Liza would be there for her through all of it. Sterling chose to keep the baby, hoping that she would somehow figure it out. She researched pregnancy, grieved the future and plans she’d lost, and she leaned heavily on her family for their support. It was during this time that she had put aside her differences with Liza and understood that Liza wasn’t trying to replace their mom, Liza was only wanting to make things better for all of them. Liza quickly became Sterling’s best friend again.
When Sterling heard her daughter’s heartbeat for the first time, she cried and somehow knew she already loved the little baby growing inside of her so much. A few months later, she learned she was having a little girl, and that’s when she started getting excited. She started buying things for her baby girl and she was beginning to prepare herself for what was going to come. She and her sister came up with a birth plan for her and she tried to enjoy how fascinating she found her pregnancy, rather than focusing on all the terrifying things about it.
When the time finally came for Sterling to give birth, she begged Liza to stay by her side the whole time, and her sister did just that. It was an excruciating twenty-four hour labor, but on March 15, 2019, Sterling gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Sunny Elizabeth Levin. Sterling had chosen the name when she was listening to her mother’s favorite song, Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles, to calm her nerves about her pregnancy and labor.
After Sterling returned home with her daughter, she knew everything wouldn’t be perfect, but nothing prepared her for what she was about to go through. There were sleepless nights, aches and pains, and stitches she’d wished someone would have been kind enough to warn her she would most likely have to get. Things weren’t easy but as the months went by, it got a bit better. However, there were days when Sterling found it difficult to get out of bed. She was oversleeping, her anxiety was high, and she felt hopeless at times. It scared her because she’d never felt any of those things the way she was before, and she never had some of those issues either. But now she was a new mom with a new baby who needed her, and she could barely get out of bed in the morning.
She cried to her sister and told her she felt she was already failing because her daughter needed her and she felt she wasn’t enough for herself somedays, and she wondered if it was a mistake that she hadn’t found Sunny a better mother to raise her. Sterling was so scared that she hired a nanny to help her, someone to make sure she was never alone with Sunny and someone to help her figure out what the hell she was supposed to be doing. It was through this woman that Sterling learned she may have postpartum depression. She’d heard of it before, of course, but she hadn’t considered that was the problem. It was then that Sterling felt maybe she could try to get help for it. Sterling began seeing a therapist to help her learn how to cope with everything, but it wasn’t as helpful as she hoped. It wasn’t a one and done fix-all. It was work and it was hard and it was discouraging at times, but Sterling knew she needed to do it for herself and for her daughter. It took a lot of time and a lot of support from the people in Sterling’s family and the nanny she’d hired, but things finally started to get better.
About a year and a half later, Sterling and the nanny she’d hired parted ways, though they still stayed in contact in case Sterling needed help or just a friend to talk to. It took a bit longer but Sterling finally felt okay with getting a job at Seaside Animal Rescue, she and Liza eventually moved out of their father’s house and into their own on Aurora Bay Drive, and life was good again. It wasn’t perfect and there was still a lot of heartache and bad days, but Sterling wouldn’t change anything.
Currently, Sterling still lives in her home on Aurora Bay Drive with her daughter, Sunny, and her boyfriend, Arkin. She continues to work at Seaside Animal Rescue, and she is pregnant with her second child, a boy she already loves to pieces.
