It would not function on beings of light and energy but really it does not need too.
In one of the episodes the character “amethyst” falls from a cliff and cracks her gem, the the thing that if broken will cause their “death” through this we can ascertain what is needed to destroy the energy automatons.
While scale in the show itself is inconsistent at best it is generally accepted that the boy Steven is around 3′6″ and so using this image
we can determine that the aforementioned cliff is around 40 meters in height. Remember this.
Amethyst is generally agreed to be around 4 feet in height. Her weight is unknown, I had originally considered her weight to be 45kg for her build but I will go ahead and assume as a warrior caste she is much denser for her size at 65kg. Until an official weight is documented this will remain my go-to.
Now an object weighing 65kg falling from a height of 40m will impact the ground with around 25480 Joules of force. This is enough to crack Amethysts gem.
Using this image as reference with amethyst being 4 feet tall her gem would be about 20cm in height. With a radius of 10cm it would have an area of 314 cm2. Now while you might think that we have determined that 25480 Joules of force spread over 314cm2 would be enough to cause damage to the gem. From its appearance if has 7 clear cut facets we must account for.
While the centre facet is much larger I dont wish to measure and calculate all that as it would take up a lot more time so we will just divide the area by 7. You might think that this is lazy, well fuck you. Since we do not know the MINIMUM amount of pressure required to crack the gem all I can really do is provide an informed assumption about its properties. Also since it is not consistent with the durability of any man made or earth found substance I have no frame of reference in that regard. So this will have to do. assuming that amethyst landed on one of the facets straight on 25480 Joules over an area of 44.8 cm2 was able to damage the gem.
This means that around 568.75 joules of pressure per cubic centimetre is required to cause a crack in the gem. Now we will look at the Joule energy of several types of bullets.
For several things like a shotgun shell the energy would be spread out among the pellet’s and would be lower at the point of impact but the point stands. Bullets do deform on impact and spread their energy over a greater area when they strike something hard but it is still important to know that the point of impact is often much smaller than even 1 cubic centimetre. I have no doubt in my mind that higher power munitions could very easily damage the gem in question.
And I have even less doubt that high powered munitions could outright destroy it beyond repair.
Quartz gems are considered the warrior caste and so I assume that they are very durable compared to others. While there are some exceptions like the Peridot every other member of their “species” appears less hardy.
I also put forward that bullets would destroy the corporeal form of a gem. I will explain why of course.
In one episode the gem pearl is perforated with a sword by her hologram. This causes the dissipation of her physical form. Notably this is important because the sword used is not a blunt weapon or a weapon of energy or light. The sword used is forged from earth metals. In fact while incredibly resistant to blunt attack, heat attack, and are unaffected by atmospheric extremes they all seem vulnerable to perforation by sharpened or pointed weapon. Notable examples include Jaspers defeat by sharpened metal rod and bismuth by sword. In fact the effectiveness of the “breaking point” is further proof of gems vulnerability to perforation by physical non light objects. I also think that gem war-machines share the same vulnerability.
When light cannons are used to attack a gem warship they are ineffective and so are the personal energy weapons of the gems. When the ship crashes however it is very interesting what happens.
It shatters into pieces, like glass or rock. Unlike metal their combat technology seems to consist of a hard but brittle material.
However all their industrial technology such as drills and escape pods seem to consist of metal or a similar analog that can deform before breaking. Why though?
Gems appear to have an incredible amount of energy at their disposal, so much so that why would they even consider using powders to propel slugs of metal? If they since their conception have been using heat and lasers as their ranged weapons of choice then they would never have a need to adapt protection against kinetic weaponry. Thus the material used to protect their combat ships is designed to absorb or reflect incredible amounts of heat and light without melting. Providing little in the way of protection against concentrated kinetic impacts. While gems have used rockets and explosives before I suspect that they are much like high explosive warheads. Releasing an incredible amount of heat and energy on impact but not providing much in the way of armor penetration.
So why do humans not fight back if they have both the means and the motivation to do so? Well I suspect a greater cause. In one episode an off hand remark is made about cleaning up the debris of a warship so that humans do not get their hands on gem technology and “hurt themselves”. This of course is silly it is shown multiple times that the entire planet is littered with wrecks and ruins of inactive or disabled gem technology. Do the gems that act as the “protectors” of the earth really believe that no one has ever noticed any of this? Sure you could argue that humans might not be able to interface with the technology or understand its workings but why then make consistent organised recovery efforts to reclaim gem weaponry?
Does anyone really think that no human government on earth noticed an alien warship enter the atmosphere and attack a city, in america no less. No military or police involvement, not even news coverage. Again you could stretch and say that by now human governments know not to get involved in gem affairs but that is fucking retarded to be honest. When have humans ever not gotten involved? You bet your ass the secret service of every god damn nation on the planet earth would be at the site of an alien crash within a few hours if it happened in a public place. Unless they had a greater motive of course.
As long as the crystal gems are allowed to operate and do whatever they want then the homeworld will keep sending forces and Technology to earth in attempt to reclaim the planet. You CANNOT make the claim that no one knows the crystal gems exist on planet earth, an entire town knows they exist. They are documented on the internet by a local crazy, and several transmissions have appeared on tvs and radios because of them.
I have no doubt that every super power on earth has signed hundreds of treaties and constantly runs cover-up operations to keep the world from interfering with or finding out about the crystal gems. As long as they are on earth, new gem technology will keep coming. No matter how many recovery operations the gems run they cannot get everything, it will fall into the hands of those who want it. I am sure there are hundreds of local recovery teams ready to go and investigate crashed alien shit before “earths loyal protectors” ever get there taking what they need and then leaving.
The only one who would possibly ever know that humans are taking what they want and using the crystal gems as bait would be the garnet as she has the ability to see the future and almost all possible paths it can take. She knows but can do nothing, as far as the others know the human government does not know of them and she is smart enough to not compromise that.
The homeworld does not even see humanity as a factor in their plan, much less a potential threat. This works out perfectly for humanity as they can lay low until they are capable of fighting back or even destroying concentrated invading forces. If ever the worlds militaries manage to reverse engineer gem technology they would both solve the energy crisis and be able to develop many hybrid weapon systems. If it ever became mass produced then man portable railguns would become the norm. IF they figure out faster than light travel and communication then they could easily plan coordinated strikes against homeworld planets.
Beyond all that I suspect they are VERY interested in the boy Steven.
The “gem” itself seems to be an incredibly powerful computer and source of energy. Clearly capable of energy to mass conversion, a human hybrids body could not be destroyed. While he does need to eat and sleep Steven is capable of increasing the mass and size of his body. This could also be a form of hyper vitality and if harnessed any injury could quickly be healed. Even grievous loss of body mass and organ failure. Much like gems convert energy to mass to make up the corporeal form of gems, Stevens gem converts energy to organic matter. If indeed both his brain and the gem fill a the same function of containing his mind and life force then his entire body could be destroyed and subsequently reform if this is indeed the case. Perhaps gruesome but far more durable than a regular gem. An actual trained Hybrid soldier could use both gem energy powers and be immune to the many weapons that the gems themselves are weak too.
Steven is immune to the gem disruptor but we can still see that part of him conducts the energy. We can assume that he is a a true hybrid and that his gem permiates its energy through his body. An organic host having an organ that can convert its vast energy to mass well that itself could be the most terrifying bioweapon ever known. There is no reason that the earths superpowers would not be attempting the combine organic matter with gems in order to create a perfect supersoldier.
The show is just ok, the characters are very much what you expect from a cartoon. I can see why people like it and I can see why people hate it. I enjoyed the worldbuilding more than the show itself. BUT if ANY of what I said is true or gets expanded upon in the show then I will do a backflip into my own ass.
