Let it snow! It’s the holidays, so many of us are longing for a bit of the white stuff – enough to brighten up the season but not enough to cause mayhem.
Recent snow in Arizona’s Dos Cabezas Mountains aired on the right side of that line, causing that surreal feeling you get in this part of the world – standing in a few inches of snow and looking down on dry, sunbaked high desert.  Tall peaks of the Sky Islands, as these mountain ranges are called, top out over 10,000 feet.  This brings a coat of snow to the mountaintops while thousands of feet below the valleys may get nothing more than a few drops of rain.
Up here, the fresh snow has a way of bringing some out some magic. Â On this trip it was the cactus and agave with a layer of frosting. Â Even more intriguing was the fresh track of a mountain lion that had obviously crossed the road within minutes. Â Not a bad way to usher in the winter.
To see the Dos Cabezas for yourself, visit BLM’s Indian Bread Rocks Picnic Site or Fort Bowie, a National Park Service National Historic Site.
