Coordination of all logistics required for international students is the key to making a remarkable trip. From home country, in-country transportation services, renting, or learning materials, it’s simple to understand how ineffective logistics may affect the success of the trip from the pre-arrival, arrival, during the stay, and departure. 

The list below contains 8 secrets to make international students meet and exceed their expectations with a streamlined trip to Rwanda field study.  

1. Make a timetable for a field study program

Keep your field study program activities on track with a detailed event planning timeline. This timeline should include key dates, and tasks for the activities planned.

 2. Considering the logistics based on the proposed venue for the field study.  

The location of the field study has a big impact on logistics preparation. Therefore, it is better to make sure that your planned logistics go hand in hand with the location of the field study so that it doesn’t add extra cost to the planned budget. 

3. Assigning team members to key tasks

Making the proper task assignments to team members can ensure that your projects are successful, completed on schedule, and within budget.

4. Clarify logistics expectations with every vendor

The awareness of all field studies required logistics for vendors expected to work with allows everyone to accept or reject the agreement ahead of time so that the program officer may plan for further alternatives. 

5. Ensure accommodation space and field study cars walkthrough 

The program officer and his supporting team should ensure the effectiveness of the safety, security, and cleanliness of accommodation space and transportation facilities during the field study period. 

6. Program officer Must be available for a troubleshooting role. 

It happens that things may go wrong. Fortunately, when a team member (program officer) is assigned to troubleshooting duties and is well prepared either physically or mobile phone, these challenges might be fixed before small hitches turn into serious concerns.

Rwandan Culture and Etiquette

                          Meeting and Greeting 

In Rwanda, greetings are very significant. A handshake is appropriate in most situations. It is impolite to ignore greetings or strike up a discussion without proper greetings. 

Usual greetings are Muraho which means (Hello), Mwaramutse (Good morning), or Mwiriwe (Good afternoon/evening). This initial greeting is usually followed by Amakuru? (How's the news?) or, among close friends, Bite se? (How are things going?). The typical response is Ni meza (Fine) or Ni meza cyane (Very fine).

                                    Body language

When beckoning someone to come, you should face your palm downwards and make a scratching motion with your fingers. It is rude to point at people, as pointing is reserved for dogs.

                                    Corporate Culture

* Rwandans tend to communicate more directly in certain situations and indirect in others.

* It’s best to avoid asking about someone’s ethnicity.

*Good topics for conversation are food, the Rwandan landscape, your home country, sports, and weather.

                               Dress code (Women & Men) 

* Men are likely to wear tight when they are going to a different event or at the workplace. As we know that someone who wears tight looks professional

* Women like makeup when they are attending different events, but mostly this happened in the cities and towns while in rural areas Rwandan women are likely to wear Kitenge clothes. 

                                                   Gifts 

In Rwanda, people are likely to give gifts that relate to their culture. Like in the wedding ceremony people tend to give cows as a gift. Or when Rwandan wishes to give a gift to a foreigner prefer to give him/her a man-made handcraft such as baskets, pottery, handwoven blankets……

Field Study to Explore In                                      Rwanda

Rwanda is a landlocked country with land borders with four countries  Uganda in the north, Tanzania in the east, Burundi in the south, and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the west. 

Modern Rwanda is among the top site of much foreign research on a variety of topics, from the 1994 genocide against Tutsi field study and its repercussions on the development and its impact. The Rwandan policy on the protection and management of its flora and fauna, national and international educational institutions, and Rwandan cultures bring much attention to international students to discover.  

In this note, I will share with you 5 field studies that researchers, international students, scientists, and cultural anthropologists should visit in Rwanda. 

1. Kigali Genocide Memorial 

Kigali genocide memorial is located in Kigali city. The memorial is the resting place of over 250,000 of a million who perished during the genocide against Tutsi in 1994. On your visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, you will learn more about Rwandan society from the Kingdom, colonialism, to the genocide era.

2. University of Global Health Equity ( UGHE)

The university of Global Health Equity ( UGHE) is a health sciences university located in northern province of Rwanda in Burera district. The university of Global Health Corps is an initiative of Partners in Health organization which built Cancer Center of Excellence. Health scientists and students can learn more about cancer treatment through field visit at University of Global Health Equity campus.

3. Rwanda Institute for  Conservation of Agriculture (RICA)  

Rwanda Institute for Conservation of Agriculture is unique conservation of agriculture institution. The institution combines research, education that aim to train next generation of leaders in agriculture while. 4. Nyamirambo Women Center

Nyamirambo Women Center is a social organization located in Nyamirambo sector, Nyarugenge district in Kigali city. The organization was established by 18 Rwandan women. The organization was established with the aim of addressing gender-based violence and gender inequality among Rwandans. The Nyamiramo Women Center also provides vocational training to vulnerable women about women’s accessories, clothing, and home decor products and the organization supports them to get the market to those products. 5. Zipline Drones For Medical delivery field study 

Zipline is a company that operate in Rwanda which does medical delivery specifically blood products in rural area in Rwanda using drones. Currently, Zipline has office in Muhanga district in southern province and it is 49 km from Kigali city and it is 1h :20 min. Scientists, students, health professionals can visit its office for field study and learn more about blood and other medical products delivery in rural of Rwanda.

Why Visiting Rwanda?

Rwanda is located in Central/Eastern Africa and is bordered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, and Burundi to the south. It lies a few degrees south of the equator and is landlocked. The capital, Kigali, is located near the centre of Rwanda.

Chimpanzees are primates that you can find in Rwanda. Those primates are found in Nyungwe National Park in the southwest part of the country. Kigali the progressive capital

Rwanda had to virtually rebuild its communities from scratch following a brutal period of genocide in 1994, but the way its capital city has developed since then is remarkable. Kigali is among the cities which are being developed faster not only in Africa but also in the worldwide.
